I volunteered as a timer, which allowed me an up close and personal view of the kids I was observing. There were three separate swim teams participating in the meet, which totaled around 60-80 swimmers. There was 4 distinct age groups that competed: 8 years old and under, 9 & 10 year olds, 11 & 12 year olds, and 13 & 14 year olds. My nephew competed in the 9 & 10 group, and my niece swam in the 11 & 12 group, so naturally I focused more on those swimmers. This observation allowed me a great insight into many of the social customs and practices of a 21st Century student-athlete. At the beginning of the meet, I observed many swimmers exhibiting a great deal of anxiety. They frequently complained about the events they were signed up to swim, and felt unsure about how they would do in the events. Their postures were often hunched over or bunched up, and their tone was often muted. As the meet progressed and they realized that their reservations were unwarranted they became more boisterous, and confident about their next events. Their posture improved, and they began to exhibit more energetic postures and motions when lining up for their events. When I was thirteen I did not have a cell phone, and the internet was an uncommon luxury; not a customary part of life. Now as an adult I find that I understand less, and with time, more changes are in store for the next up and coming generation. For the past ten years I have been a youth leader at my church to teenagers from ages thirteen to twenty. I decided to conduct my observation on a church youth social gathering. The young people had gathered together at the church to play board games, however after about twenty five minutes into the beginning of the gathering the young people had not managed to actually start any of the games. Instead the girls spent their time taking pictures of themselves and each other with their phones. It was weird to watch the girls ignore each other and still communicate; they were not talking in person, but communicating on social media. In my opinion the young ladies had taken a lot of time on their appearance; having their hair, make-up, and clothing looking as though they were going out for a night on the town, and not a night of board games. ...Alicia Nunez June 14, 2015 Edu 210 Kimberly Werking Students in the 21st Century I made my observation inside a local peter piper pizza Friday night around 9 p.m. I chose this location because I have seen teenage students hang out for hours of the night. Throughout my observation, I noticed that the group of six students. It was evident that they had poor communication skills. Either they were extremely loud and obnoxious shouting, or sitting in a bunch starting into their phones. When there pizzas came, they finally put down their phones and began eating. Never once engaging in conversation. When I was younger, we would go to dinner just to hang out and talk and I noticed these kids hardly spoke. The one time a conversation engaged amongst them,was when one of the students had some sauce on him. Instantly four of the students pulled out there phones and began laughing and taking pictures. They all began to laugh and reenact the situation, taking pictures and making videos on their phone. Throughout my 2-hour period sitting in the table behind them, I did not notice not one time these kids go play video games. It was visible they had no topic of discussion. The main topics were there pictures and sending it to one another on one another’s social network site. I observed the group of kids take up to 45 minutes positioning themselves in preparation of a photo. ...I completed my survey inside of a high school hockey locker room. This locker room is full of a lot of personalities. In the locker room you have immature to mature, girls and boys. This locker room is a condensed room of all different types of people. Social/interpersonal behaviors- While conducting my survey the first thing that I noticed right away was that the kids all swear, a lot. The kid’s in that locker room would swear almost every other word out of theirs mouths. When talking one on one with each other I noticed right away that they have bad manners, either texting while being spoken too. Not only texting, but also most of the kids make no eye contact when talking to each other. Topics of discussion- In the locker room their lots of different discussions, since the team is made up of mostly teen boys, a lot of talk was about girls. Being younger myself I found it funny listening them talk about whom they like, and how they are going to ask them on dates. The biggest shock for me was how much the kids complained. If something little went wrong they complained about. One conversation I found interesting was one kid said that since his parents are so well off he doesn’t have to try in school.
