...Diana Lovato EDU-210 February 8, 2015 Instructor Winter Students in the 21st Century As I age I have realized that the life of a young person has changed drastically in comparison to the way I grew up. When I was thirteen I did not have a cell phone, and the internet was an uncommon luxury; not a customary part of life. Now as an adult I find that I understand less, and with time, more changes are in store for the next up and coming generation. For the past ten years I have been a youth leader at my church to teenagers from ages thirteen to twenty. I decided to conduct my observation on a church youth social gathering. The young people had gathered together at the church to play board games, however after about twenty five minutes into the beginning of the gathering the young people had not managed to actually start any of the games. Instead the girls spent their time taking pictures of themselves and each other with their phones. It was weird to watch the girls ignore each other and still communicate; they were not talking in person, but communicating on social media. In my opinion the young ladies had taken a lot of time on their appearance; having their hair, make-up, and clothing looking as though they were going out for a night on the town, and not a night of board games. The young men all high fived and fist bumped upon arrival and gathered together in a corner where they all took their phones out. The boys had brief moments of communication when they would share...

...Alicia Nunez June 14, 2015 Edu 210 Kimberly Werking Students in the 21st Century I made my observation inside a local peter piper pizza Friday night around 9 p.m. I chose this location because I have seen teenage students hang out for hours of the night. Throughout my observation, I noticed that the group of six students. It was evident that they had poor communication skills. Either they were extremely loud and obnoxious shouting, or sitting in a bunch starting into their phones. When there pizzas came, they finally put down their phones and began eating. Never once engaging in conversation. When I was younger, we would go to dinner just to hang out and talk and I noticed these kids hardly spoke. The one time a conversation engaged amongst them, was when one of the students had some sauce on him. Instantly four of the students pulled out there phones and began laughing and taking pictures. They all began to laugh and reenact the situation, taking pictures and making videos on their phone. Throughout my 2-hour period sitting in the table behind them, I did not notice not one time these kids go play video games. It was visible they had no topic of discussion. The main topics were there pictures and sending it to one another on one another’s social network site. I observed the group of kids take up to 45 minutes positioning themselves in preparation of a photo. Once the photo was taken, they all took turns looking at the photo and sharing it with one another...

...“Students in the 21st Century” Ashley Williams EDU.576 June 13, 2012 Joanne Simpson As I sat in the food court at the mall, I noticed a group of teens, who were sitting about two tables from me. They all were wore tight jeans and tight t-shirts. Two of them had on a pair of large black framed glasses and the other two had gages in their ears. They looked like skateboarders but I didn’t think they were because they didn’t have any skateboards, and I had just saw a display that had a mannequin with similar clothing. They were just being fashionable. It’s kind of amusing and fascinating seeing how fashion trends change from generation to generation. I remember being in high school and the “prep” look was in. Everyone wore polo shirts, khaki pants, short, or skirts, jeans, and polo boots or doc martens. Those who wore skateboarder type clothing were actually skateboarders, those who were thugs wore thug like clothing, and those who wore gothic like clothes were actually into the gothic culture. It was easy to see who identified with what group or culture. They all were pretty nonchalant in attitude and demeanor, with sluggish posture, and were pretty loud, as most teenagers would be. They were on their cell phones, not talking, but texting, on facebook, using twitter, instagram, and other forms of social media. Seeing the use social media and modern technology, made me realize how much it has advanced. Cell phones have changed drastically, coming from the...

...I completed my survey inside of a high school hockey locker room. This locker room is full of a lot of personalities. In the locker room you have immature to mature, girls and boys. This locker room is a condensed room of all different types of people. Social/interpersonal behaviors- While conducting my survey the first thing that I noticed right away was that the kids all swear, a lot. The kid’s in that locker room would swear almost every other word out of theirs mouths. When talking one on one with each other I noticed right away that they have bad manners, either texting while being spoken too. Not only texting, but also most of the kids make no eye contact when talking to each other. Topics of discussion- In the locker room their lots of different discussions, since the team is made up of mostly teen boys, a lot of talk was about girls. Being younger myself I found it funny listening them talk about whom they like, and how they are going to ask them on dates. The biggest shock for me was how much the kids complained. If something little went wrong they complained about. One conversation I found interesting was one kid said that since his parents are so well off he doesn’t have to try in school. Even though that may be true it just shows the immaturity of these teens. Common phrases and verbiage- Being teenagers they say a lot of weird things. Only being twenty one years of age I still like to think of myself as down to earth and still think I know a little...

...LANGUAGE TEACHING IS EFFECTIVE FOR 21st CENTURY STUDENTS The functional approach is a methodology that allows the learner to “function” effectively; is based not in the linguistic analysis of the content to be taught but on what is usually designated as the learner’s needs. Regarding Halliday´s theory, this approach is concerned with the way language is organized to fulfill communicative functions. What is more, it aims to account for three basic kinds of meaning, the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual and last but not least each element in a language is explained by reference to its function in the total linguistic system. In the 21st Century the learner’s needs are not the same now as the ones in the 20th century since the students are not the same nor the society. In the 21st Century classroom, Teachers are facilitators of students’ learning and creators of productive classroom environments in which students can develop the skills they will need in their workplace mainly. As the 21st Century classroom is student centered, teachers no longer function as lecturers but as facilitators of learning. The students are learning by doing, so they need to be aware of their participation in the language production. Today there is an increasing emphasis on involving students in decisions affecting their own learning- getting them to take responsibility for their own learning decisions, and to consciously develop learning skills, and now students’ role is really important in...

...struggling for student enrollment, school choice would help eliminate the bad ones. When schools are depleted of students, they close. Unfortunately, this leads to restricted space at the successful schools (Hopkinson). A likely result of conflict between schools due to school choice could be the elimination of small town, public schools and limited enrollment in large, private schools. This could possibly have another effect on private schools as well. “With more schools vying for tuition money, the quality of private schooling may suffer in the process, leaving some parents actually paying out of pocket for a lesser education than they would...

...21st Century Teaching and Learning: The Freedom in Teaching by: Hayati bt Zakaria @ Ariffin After I met with some English teachers when attending the new literature syllabus, I feel I was left far behind. At present, education aims to expose students to different global issues and concerns. It also opens the idea that learning does not only happen within the four corners of the classroom. There has been generally a growing awareness of the necessity to change and improve the preparation of students for productive functioning in the continually changing and highly demanding environment. Clearly, no simple, single uniform approach can be applied with the expectation that significant improvements of the system will occur. Indeed, any strategy for change must contend with the diverse factors affecting the education system, the interactions of its parts, and the intricate interdependencies within it and with its environment. Following are the few consideration to improve learning. • Integrating the commonly polarized goals of education; i.e. the goal that focuses on transmitting knowledge with the goal that emphasizes the development of the individual student. • Adapting teaching to different student characteristics by using diverse methods of teaching. Adaptation to the ability levels, patterns of different abilities, learning styles, personality characteristics, and cultural backgrounds. • Integrating the curriculum by developing inter-disciplinary curriculum units that enable students to acquire knowledge from different disciplines through a unifying theme while having the opportunity to contribute in different and special ways to the objectives...
