How can we improve our study habits?
Everyone has the experience students, starting from kindergarten to high school or university. For most people, it’s not hard to become a student, but becoming a student who has great grades is not easy. You must want to know what causing this difference. The answer is good study habits. In the process of schooling, many students actually don’t have good study habits. If you want to have a good score, the good study habits can help you more likely to achieve your goals. Improving our study habits can occur in three stages: developing learning habits, using four study skills and understanding the benefits of good habits.
First of all, students should develop a way of learning. In fact, most of them don't realize that they don’t have completed good study habits. The article “Why ‘good’ study habit may be bad for learning” (2010) talks, "Clear a quiet work space. Stick to a homework schedule. Set goals. Set boundaries. Do not bribe." But this approach to home studying may be the result of "sketchy education research" and, as such, completely wrong.” This article shows us that our traditional sense of learning habit is not correct. Consequently, you might ask what good study habits are. The good study habits including setting a regular time to study that fits in with the student's family schedule; removing distractions; gathering necessary supplies; recording assignments in an assignment book or on a calendar; note-taking and organizing for a test “Encourage and teach good study habits” (1998). Some people don't have completed the study habits, and some people know use good habits, but those people easy to give up. Therefore, hanging on to those habits are important factor of our development good study habits.
A second stage is using four study skills to improve your study. The first skill is setting a goal that is a tool to help you achieve your wants; it also increases your chances of success. Not only do that but also you need to have the action is according to your plan can make the dream into reality (Personal goal setting for success). My personal goal is to keep my scholarship in Ashland University. This means my GPA is in at least 3.0. I set that is my intention in order to achieve better grades, so I should study hard towards this goal.
The second skill is time management. This skill is most important point of our study. Tanriogen & Iscan (2009) cites Pamukkale university student data to show us that the purpose of time management is to increase the quality of the students’ learning in the limited time, so that can reflecting the time value maximization. We also can use three different kinds of techniques to accomplish time management. The pomodoro technique is one kind of management. “The method is based on the idea that time-management tools and techniques should be simple; that frequent breaks can improve mental agility; and that changing the way people think about time can ease anxiety, freeing them to concentrate better” (Shellenbarge, 2009). We learned the information about the pomodoro techinique is easily to understand and exercise, but the lack of this method is too narrow. Next is FranklinCovey's Focus “Focus aims to help users jettison busywork and wasted time and devote themselves to their most valued pursuits” (Shellenbarge, 2009). This method helps people to divide important and not important things, and then we can save time to do most meaningful things. The last method is getting things done. This method is written down the thing which I want to finish and establish a flowchart, those contains action list; schedule project and remind matters (shellenbarge, 2009). All three are good time management skills for students.
Third is preview and read. Every student should read the lecture before the class, especially for international students. The main reason is vocabulary. If you do know the vocabulary in your lecture then it's hard to understand what teacher talking about. However, preview does not always work very well. Many teachers outline will not cover all books. They still want students to read the book. For example, sometimes my marketing teacher will ask some question before the new chapter started. At the end of chapter, she would send the lecture. She uses this way to encourage us to read the book. Many intelligent students didn't waste a lot of time in reading. They usually read carefully in the first and last paragraph in each chapter. Those paragraph statement the most information. In addition, the first and last sentences in each paragraph are showing the reader what will be cover and summarized the paragraph (Seebach, 2009).
Recall is the last skill of improve study habits. Most students might dislike using this habit until the exam coming. Recall is helping us constantly strengthen our knowledge. The most effective is practical in learning a foreign language. “Student that kept studying the words over and over without subsequent self-testing recalled only 10% to 60% of the words after one week, vs. 63% to 95% of those students that made extensive use of self-testing after their practice sessions” (Seebach, 2009). These data show the learning process we forget frequency is very high, so reply is the most effective way to help us improve the learning impression.
Moreover, the finally stage is benefit from using study habits. For me, the most obvious thing is gaining confidence. Through understanding and learning good study habits that cause me learned how become organized, it not only in the study. For example, you study hard, and you have a very good grade report when you graduate, you might get more chances than others. At the same time you’ll have organization from the good study habits, which can also help you better to deal with your life's problems. You are more reasonable. The better you will differentiate priorities to deal with things. On the other hand, good study habits are efficiency. What is most important thing for us? It’s time. Time is fair because to everyone is the same. “Planning your study schedule in advance and faithfully sticking to it saves time” (Hong, 2010). Good study habits will bring you become successful quickly.
In conclusion, there are three different stages to help us achieve our good study habits. Many people still believe they have no good study habits but also can obtain good results. Compare to the people who has good study habits, they spend most time in study. Actually, there a lot of extracurricular activities in school except studying. Having good study habits are the most useful way to maintain efficient students learn and also enjoy student life. From good study habits started, becoming a student who has great grades, and then you will have more chance than other people to success.

This part was laid by different people who had undergone a related study. Filipinos are very much aware of the negative traits that were passed on by our folks. It is the students who are the affected and influenced on their studies. It is so hard for us to take away the traits we have since birth because it is already running through our blood. Mañana Habit First let us define what Mañana Habit is..Mañana is a Spanish word meaning “Tomorrow” or “At an specified future time”. In short, it is exactly described as “Procrastination”. In Filipino terms, Mañana Habit means “Mamayana” or “Do it Later”. Which results in a very unorganized way of doing things, specifically for office tasks because it affects the overall performance of an employee. Skipping deadlines, stress and anxiety are just some effects of that habit. Why am I sharing this? Simply because I couldn’t get rid of that problem. I’ve realized that this malpractice is hard to remove. Based from my experience, this really affects my overall performance in work. Many of my colleagues says “magalingkakwing, tamadkalang”, meaning I’ve got a talent but it’s just I’m too lazy to do things. Why? Simply because I am easily distracted by my surroundings, events, ideas that pops out of my mind. Leaving the work pending and my mind is wandering all over. The sad...

...is too deep; it is beyond my understanding.” (Psalms 139: 1-6) Studying is essential. There is nothing quite so pleasing in the world of education as to the ones coming along with much knowledge about the subject matter than those who are walking into an examination with the blustery confidence . At the same time, despite the fact that, there are many temptations when one sits down for study still they can concentrate studying because they have a goal to achieve. The most important study habit is recognizing that one is responsible for the successes and also failures. Taking on this responsibility entails the understanding that the priorities, decisions, habits, and resources all establish the success one has, or does not have, with studying. (Donaghy, 2009) Study habit is a technique or a strategy used every time a person is studying. Some students would have the same study habit or may have a different one. Based on the researchers’ point of view, it depends on whether a specific study habit is effective for them. Students may use different kinds of techniques.
