Study Skills

...------------------------------------------------- Study skills From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Study skills or study strategies are approaches applied to learning. They are generally critical to success in school,[1] considered essential for acquiring good grades, and useful for learning throughout one's life. There are an array of study skills, which may tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information, retaining information, or dealing with assessments. They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information, effective reading and concentration techniques,[2] as well as efficient notetaking.[3] While often left up to the student and their support network, study skills are increasingly taught in High School and at the University level. A number of books and websites are available, from works on specific techniques such as Tony Buzan's books on mind-mapping, to general guides to successful study such as those by Stella Cottrell. More broadly, any skill which boosts a person's ability to study and pass exams can be termed a study skill, and this could include time management and motivational techniques. Study Skills are discrete techniques that can be learned, usually in a short time, and applied to all or most fields of study. They must therefore be distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study e.g. music or technology, and from abilities inherent in the student, such as aspects of intelligence or learning...

Study Skills

...Study skills are learning strategies that help students organize, process, and use information effectively. Because youth might need help not just with what they learn but also with how they learn it, WIA makes study skills instruction, together with tutoring and dropout prevention, one of the 10 required elements of youth programs. These skills are important not just for a. academic learning, b. but also for everyday life. They can help individuals be organized and successful lifelong learners and manage their jobs, households, and finances (EMSTAC, 2001). c. Study skills can be especially critical for youth with learning disabilities, who may have difficulty staying focused and become discouraged by lack of success (Beckman, 2002). When students attribute failure to internal factors, such as lack of ability, or external factors, such as bad luck, their self-confidence suffers and they see effort as futile (Peirce, 2004). Mastering the skills for studying and learning increases their self-efficacy and empowers them to change their approach and try different strategies if one fails. Signs that students need help developing study skills include spending too much time studying, taking class notes that are difficult to understand or contain the wrong information, procrastinating about large projects or tasks, being unable to identify what is important in a text, or being unable to remember what they have read (Cook Counseling Center, 2006; EMSTAC,2001). Students and...

...Study Skills Essay I have chosen to study about Diabetes as I think it is important that everyone is aware of this disease. In the past year the amount of people diagnosed with Diabetes has risen to 2.8 million people, an increase of more than 150,000 people in a year. This means that one in twenty of the UK population now has Diabetes. (Diabetes UK, 2010). From my experience, working as a health care assistant on a ward in a local hospital trust, I have first hand knowledge that you could be caring for a number of patients with Diabetes at one time. In this essay I shall be exploring different methods of study skills for my chosen topic. For each study skill that I have chosen, I shall explain why that method was selected, what I found useful and what did not help in increasing my knowledge of this subject. I shall demonstrate how I used a learning styles questionnaire to determine what type of learner I am. I will do this by describing the questionnaire and I shall explain how I used the information to increase my learning. How I managed my time to study effectively around university and placement will also be discussed. To prepare myself for writing this essay, I decided to discover what my learning style was in a study skills guide recommended by the university. There were four different learning styles and to help you decide which one you were there was a list of the characteristics, learning strengths and the areas that the individual needed to develop...

...The Decisions That Will Take You Forever Everyone has a way of studying no matter how it is done; even if its by sleeping, pulling an all nighter, or cramming right before the test, that’s studying. How you choose your proper study habits will impact you future for better or for worse. When studying, there are at least three categories that people fit into; 1) extremely successful people who usually study the text to be tested on at least 3 or 4 days before, 2) average people who study a day before, 3) last but not least, the crammers who study at least 2 minutes before administration of the test. Along with the three categories that people fall into, there are three ways of how to properly study so that you will start off successful and be that way for the rest of your life. The first most commonly used, highlighting, second, outlining the text, third, margin notes. “Although often overlooked or relegated to a minor position in most study skills programs, appropriate in-text-highlighting skills is one of the cornerstones of all A+ students.”1 One of the ways to study fast and effectively, especially for crammers, is to simply highlight the text. This method is a very simple method, starting out by simply reading the text, then highlighting the main points. This will help you, when cramming, to easily pick out the stuff that you really need to know and eliminate all the other things that re not needed. There are downsides to this though, sometimes the text that you are ...

...Study Skills Having good study skills are important skills to have as a college student. Effective study habits and study skills lead to good grades. Three new study skill I’ve learn are to set up a realistic time schedule, active reading, and practice test taking. You should include all required activities and maintence task. These task include work, class time, shopping, cleaning, cooking, child care, and etc. Daily you should include at least an hour in a quiet location where you can focus and study. ...Journal Week #3 STUDY SKILLS This was my third week in this fantastic course named as “Study Skills”. On Monday, September 8th we did not get on the wrong foot but with an interesting topic by knowing our results related to “Multiple Intelligences”. Since I was curious about interpreting my scores, I was just looking forward to it and it was worth it. I got Intra and Inter intelligence and Linguistic as my highest ones. I was surprised because this means that I suit with careers such as teacher (that is what I really fancy) and my ability to cooperate in order to work as part of a group or on my own! This was pretty interesting as the descriptions of these intellegences fi ton me, every detail read was a reflection of me. After this, our Proffesor asked us to make teams of four or five people. We were assigned to do a research about topics related to internal and external factors that affect L2 Learning. Each team will be supposed to expose each class. We decided our turn to expose through a sort. My team got number 4 so we are exposing on September 22nd. Next class, which was on Wednesday, the first team shared their research with the class. They exposed about Age and Aptitude as keys that alter L2 Learning. Frankly, I did not like the way they introduced the topic; their develop was fair enough and the end quite poor in my humble opinion. However, I learned that the age and aptitude have a serious relation with the process of learning a new language. For instance, kids tend...

Study is ‘the devotion of time and attention to gaining knowledge of an academic subject, especially by means of books’ (www.oxforddictionaries.com) Cottrell 2013 writes that ‘a skill is a learned ability rather than an outcome achieved through luck or chance’. Cottrell 2013 also goes on to say, ‘you can fine tune skills through practice, feedback and reflection’. ‘Study skills are approaches applied to learning’ (wikipedia.org) Study skills include creative writing, evaluating, self and timemanagement, researching, reading, critical and creative thinking and organisation. According to Hoover and Patton, ‘study skills include the competencies associated with acquiring, recording, organizing, synthesizing, remembering and using information’. Effective Study Skills

...Portfolio Task: Module 1 Effective Study Skills are the sole foundation of a sound education What is a skill? Defined by Cottrell (2013) “To be skilled is to be able to perform a learned activity well and at will” Life skills are what we develop through life, having good study skills is an invaluable asset in all areas of life. The way in which people can learn can be majorly effected throughout life for many different reasons, one being our parenting, Robson (1996) Maintains that “parental involvement can result in an increase in knowledge, skills and confidence.” To be effective in developing study skills, build on what you already know, what you have achieved in life. Study skills can be viewed as four categories of skills, according to Cottrell (2013) 1. Self - management skills for study. 2. Academic skills. 3. People skills for studying with others. 4. Task management skills. Study skills should be made personal to ourselves, as an individual we are all different and what suits one person in learning may not suit someone else. There are so many ways to study, learning and developing study skills should be fun. People wrongly assume that to be good and effective in studying, that you have to be naturally clever. They owe much more to awareness, strategies, confidence, and practice. Intelligence is a question of how much you know. that most study skills teaching have positive effects, but some skills work better than others. Research shows that students...

My Study Skills Analysis

...In order to success in college courses, I did a study skills checklist from Virginia Tech website to figure out my weak and strong sides. This checklist has seven following areas: time scheduling, concentration, listening and note taking, reading, testing and exams, reading, and writing skills. Each area has three questions. The results of my study skills checklist are given below. Time scheduling area. In this area, I have no any concern. Time scheduling is one of important thing being successful at college. I always make my list of major events and the amount of work to be accomplished in each class every week. I study at least two hours in studying for each hour spend in the class. Also, I schedule time to spend with my family. Concentration area. There is no any concern for me in this area too. I have a specific place with a desk in my room, where I can study without being interrupted by anybody or anything. I have never doodled, daydream, or fall asleep during class; I follow everything that the teacher is saying....

Knowledge Folders and Study Skills

...Strategy of Knowledge Folders and Study Skills   2 Introduction Over the past several years, I have had students in my junior classes who were not performing well on their summative evaluations and did not seem to understand the importance of quality class work and homework. I currently teach juniors and seniors in a high school science academy where they are expected to be prepared for college and beyond. The students’ study skills were not evolved to the point where they could be successful in college or the workplace. I wanted the students to understand that they needed to take on the responsibility for learning and acquiring new skills which is expected in college work and in today’s changing and evolving workplace. Metacognition and motivation by the students for new study skills are important to me as a teacher. I want to enable students to succeed beyond high school by teaching them skills that will transfer to college and to the workplace. My hope is that the students will take on the responsibility for their own learning – that they would realize they have control over their actions. I decided to try to change the students’ concepts of learning and responsibility by implementing a strategy of Knowledge Folder assessments. Literature Review Simpson, Hynd, Nwast, and Burrell (1997), promoted learning study skills in the classroom as part of the daily curriculum, and not as a separate lesson from learning about the content. The study skill of “free writing” involved gathering...

Effective Study Skills and Academic Performance

...Introduction Effective study skills are necessary for a college student to excel academically. The student must develop these skills in order to retain information learned in the present for their future benefit. Study skills can be a combination of several techniques, including time management, note-taking, self-testing, and test-wiseness, to name a few. There is no one best way to study, therefore, techniques can be tailored to the needs of the student to achieve the most optimal result. However, diagnostic testing is also available to assist students in assessing their weaknesses in their learning behaviors and study habits. Research has shown that effective study skills lead to improved academic performance. The habits that students develop during their college years will remain with them long after graduation and will be reflected in their performance in the workforce. This paper will provide insight into the different techniques that improve study skills, and in turn, improve academic performance. The Merriam – Webster Dictionary defines the word study as "the application of the mental faculties to the acquisition of knowledge, which can be in a particular field or to a specific subject." The dictionary then defines skill as "the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance." A rather general combination of the two terms would yield, "learning and motivational strategies considered essential in being successful in college" (Tuckman...
