Sometimes they’re not even something you can control—but when you’re aware of the things that can slip you up while you’re charging ahead through your nursing administration degree, you’re much more likely to succeed. Here are 5 factors that can affect your studying: 1.Weather- Seriously. You can’t control the weather—but you can stay aware of how it affects you, both positively and negatively. A sunshiney day is going to put you in a positive mood, but it could also be contributing to your urge to procrastinate and go play. On a gloomy, rainy day, time can sometimes feel like it’s slipping away—and with it, your study hours. And it’s not just emotional: bad weather, bad roads, and delayed buses can screw up your whole schedule. All of these factors are things to make notes of and plan for when it comes to arranging your day, and your study time. 2. Your social life. It’s important to have good people in your life to help keep you balanced, because you can’t dedicate your entire emotional well-being to your medical specialties training. ...When reading “Science of Memory-for studying and for life”, this made me think of different methods I use that are helpful to me when I need to study new material. The article talks about a process with 4 different steps organizing, encoding, rehearsing, and retrieving. I do not use all 4 but all could be helpful when learning. Organization is the first step I use to memorize any new material. Notes will not help anymore if they are poorly written on not well organized. You should arrange material so it’s easy for you to review and understand it. Experimenting with different organizational techniques will also help you find an approach that is helpful to you. Encoding is another helpful step of the process. To help your memory process try to pay attention to one thing, do not split your attention with different issues. Talk about key information that needs to be remembered. When you process the information think about it and truly process it, use mental pictures if possible to “double-encode” the information. Next is rehearsing this is the step I mostly use. Some people find it helpful to rewrite notes as a form of rehearsing. I personally take flash cards and put key information on them I’m not too sure about and study from them. Study groups can also help people rehearse, just seeing how someone else interrupted the learning material. When reading the material ask yourself questions, “what did I just read”, “what does this mean”, also test yourself on the information you...

...The psychology of hobbies (The connection between hobbies and personalities) By M.Farouk Radwan, MSc. Miscellaneous 2 The psychology of hobbies Why do people have different hobbies? Why do some people have strange ones? Why would someone collect stamps or watch horror movies? Each single action that a person takes reflects his psychological makeup and hobbies are no different. Some people say that humans develop hobbies in order to get a relief from the stressful world they live in and while this fact is 100% true still it didn't explain why each person decides to get rid of that stress in a different way? Hobbies reflect the inner most desires of people, help them fulfill their unmet needs and make them feel special as you will see in the next few lines. The connection between hobbies and personalities Here are few reasons that motivate people to develop certain hobbies. 1) Compensation: Many people develop certain hobbies to compensate for certain unsatisfied emotional needs. A guy who felt powerless during his childhood might suddenly find himself in love with martial arts. By becoming more powerful that person can satisfy the emotional hunger for power he developed earlier in his childhood. That's also the reason why some of those who got bullied as children become famous fighters when they grow up. (see also How childhood experiences affect adulthood) 2) Support a certain identity: Sometimes the main reason a person develops a certain hobby is to protect a certain identity...

...Scientific research has provided us with a number of ways to get the learning juices flowing, none of which involve paying money for good grades. And most smart teachers know this, even without scientific proof. 1. Fine-tune the challenge. We’re most motivated to learn when the task before us is matched to our level of skill: not so easy as to be boring, and not so hard as to be frustrating. Deliberately fashion the learning exercise so that students are working at the very edge of your abilities, and keep upping the difficulty as they improve. 2. Start with the question, not the answer. Memorizing information is boring. Discovering the solution to a puzzle is invigorating. Present material to be learned not as a fait accompli, but as a live question begging to be explored. 3. Encourage students to beat their personal best. Some learning tasks, like memorizing the multiplication table or a list of names or facts, are simply not interesting in themselves. Generate motivation by encouraging students to compete against themselves: run through the material once to establish a baseline, then keep track of how much they improve (in speed, in accuracy) each time. 4. Connect abstract learning to concrete situations. Adopt the case-study method that has proven so effective for business, medical and law school students: apply abstract theories and concepts to a real-world scenario, using these formulations to analyze and make sense of situations involving real people...

Studying Locally and Studying Overseas

...Studying locally and studying overseas The advantages and disadvantages of studying locally and studying overseas have long been discussed especially among high school graduates. The options available to pursue further in studies and the choices made will contribute to how a particular individual’s future is shaped. Both studying locally and studying overseas have their ups and downs that could benefit students or causes challenges for them. Studying locally and studying overseas can be compared in terms of cost of living, academic benefits, language and more. First and foremost, the cost of living of studying overseas is higher especially in well-developed countries. With a present low Ringgit Malaysia currency value, it should be tougher for students to meet the basic needs in countries like the United States and Australia. The fees for college itself is already expensive and this does not yet include the expenditure for accommodation, food and transportation. Contradictory, studying locally is much cheaper. Moreover, the presence of government universities help student to pay cheaper college fees. Even if the students don’t study in a government college or university, there are quite a high number of financial aids being provided as loans or scholarships. The expenditure for accommodation, transportation, and basic needs are also cheaper. Furthermore, studying overseas allows the opportunity to travel providing students with new and more experiences. Students get to see...

...| | | | | | | | Theories of Leadership Management Topics | | Theories of leadershipLeadership has been described as the process of social influence in which one person is able to enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task [1]. A definition more inclusive of followers comes from Alan Keith of Genentech who said "Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen." [2] Students of leadership have produced theories involving traits [3], situational interaction, function, behavior, power, vision and values [4], charisma, and intelligence among others.Trait theoryTrait theory tries to describe the types of behavior and personality tendencies associated with effective leadership. This is probably the first academic theory of leadership. Ronald Heifetz (1994) traces the trait theory approach back to the nineteenth-century tradition of associating the history of society to the history of great men.[5] Thomas Carlyle can be considered one of the pioneers of the trait theory. In On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic History (1841) he used such approach to identify the talents, skills and physical characteristics of men who arose to power.Proponents of the trait approach usually list leadership qualities, assuming certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. Shelley Kirkpatrick and Edwin A. Locke (1991) exemplify the trait theory...

Studying Abroad

...Studying Abroad “One’s destination is never a place but a new way of seeing things.” Henry Miller. This quote is an expression of my opinion about studying abroad. I have dreamed about travelling to different country, studying there and meeting new people. I had an image about it in my mind that was full of nothing but excitement. In fact, studying abroad is a great chance to discover a new life and challenge myself to fit into it. Now after a year and half of studying in the United States I can say that it was one of my best decisions. I am learning lots of things from it, not only about school subjects, but about myself and life. Studying abroad is an open door for discovery, maturity and acceptance. Studying abroad helped me discover the strong relationship between me and my family. When I used to be with my family, I did not imagine how life is going to be away from them until I traveled to the US. I am now more aware of the value of being around my family, sharing stories at the end of the day or going into a conflict about silly things. Likewise, I understand the necessity of my mother's warm hug and sweet kisses every day. Also, as an international student I am missing a lot of family events back in my home. For instance, my only sister was pregnant a couple months ago. My mind was with her all the time, and each time she would not answer her phone I would think that something bad happened either to her or to the baby. Later on she gave...

Studying Religion

...Studying Religion Studying Religion Studying religions is going to be very informing since I don't follow any religion in my life. Understanding how and what each religion believes and why is going to be fascinating. I do know there is a God. I know there is a book of stories to help follow your God and way of life, and to also pass on stories of the past. It appears that each religion is a way for those following it to answers the unanswerable questions in life. Why are we here, what do we do here, why do people suffer, why do we die, these are a few issues I believe people pursue religion. Some religions tell you to live a certain way and have guidelines for you to follow. Some have you sacrifice a living thing for God. So how do you decide which religion to believe? You can support your tribe, family, or country and believe in the same as everyone else. You can study religions as this course will have us to, and find a better understanding of a God and which you have a closer connection with. Some choose to praise from home or with family and friends. Well, others have a set day and time to gather together in church. Christianity and Islam both recognize Jesus as a great prophet. Where Judaism has no similarities to Christianity. The difference is a part of religions that has puzzled me, how can some have similarities and other seem to be in a world of their own. ...Reflection 2: Exam Prep In the book they first start off with the difference between quizzes and Exams. Then they go on to talk about the first step being, take smart notes. It starts off with making sure you are taking the right notes down and not things that you will not need for the quiz or exam. They want to make sure you get the big idea out of each topic. Then they go on about the question, evidence, and conclusion. This is the way that they think people should take notes. The way I take notes is different. I find it hard to think of a question while you have to take notes at the speed of the professor is giving the lecture. What I do is make sure I mark the title of the section that I am taking the notes on then mark the notes from the section accordingly with other symbols. I find it easy to take notes in my calculus class and in my physics class. In my accounting class the professor does not have a slide show and does not lecture so it is very difficult to take notes in that class. I manage to get notes down in every class so that I can understand the material. Next the book talks about demoting assignments, and how you should choose which assignments to do over others. If you have multiple sources to read for a paper then you should only read the most credible sources so you get the important material and don’t read the same thing multiple times. I have not had a class yet that gives out multiple reading assignments for a paper. The book gives a good a good...
