...Influence of visual media Josiah Catherman HUM/176 March 17th, 2013 Shawn Lorenzen Influence of visual media It is amazing the way that the visual media explosion of the 1900’s until present has shaped our culture. From the beginning with Edison’s Kinetoscope audiences have been amazed with the technology of film making. In the beginning it was very short and common everyday scenes that audiences watched, this has grown in the last 100 years into an industry that can duplicate any scenario and put the viewer in the front seat of any number of experiences right from the comfort of their home. The industry has shaped our values as Americans in many different ways. Young people who see films about the current era that they are living in are often mesmerized by the actors and the current fads and trends that they are displaying this is often the driving force for such things as style of clothes and even as far as shaping ones character. I remember when I was young watched the film Three Ninjas it was about three brothers that knew martial arts and they used them to protect themselves and their family. I was immediately sucked into the fantasy of being a ninja and fighting bad guys. This was my ultimate boyhood fantasy, and was for years. That was my personal experience with how visual media has shaped my cultural values and helped me determine what was popular. But I think that overall there are many things that were popularized by Hollywood films that transferred into our...

Threatened that the military might threaten his position, he supported the rise of the PKI, Indonesia’s Communist Party, as counterweight to the military. This led to a power struggle between the army and, other elements of the armed forces, and the PKI, which eventually spun out of control. General Soeharto became head of state and the government became the glue that held together ethnically diverse groups. * The Technocrats and Regime Credibility – Under Soeharto, inflation was at an all-time...

...Brand erosion The OSIM brand is the success and key value driver in its business. OSIM will have to strengthen its branding to prevent any dilution and focus on strategic positioning of its core products. Management’s efforts to raise the OSIM brand profile, for instance, via sponsorship of high-profile corporate events and celebrity endorsements to raise awareness and brand presence have been successfully so far. The OSIM brand remains the key value driver of its business, and OSIM will have to carefully manage this to prevent any dilution. For now, OSIM has continued to focus on positioning its core products at the “luxury” end of its market segment, where the entry barriers are more stringent. Management has also continued to seek new channels to raise the OSIM brand profile, for instance, via sponsorship of high-profile corporate events, such as the OSIM International Triathlon since 2001, the OSIM Singapore Golf Masters (from 2005-08), and the BMF World Superseries (2011-13), which should help boost the brand’s presence globally. OSIM’s strategy is to participate in or sponsor high-profile corporate events such as triathlons, a multi-disciplinary sport that encourages stamina, endurance and strength, and promotes a healthy lifestyle, qualities that are strongly aligned with OSIM’s own corporate culture. A dedicated marketing budget (at about 6-7% of sales), coupled with celebrity endorsements and tie-ups for key product launches (e.g. Andy Lau, the Hong Kong...

...Stargate Institute Executive Summary Nabisco is a company that has been in existence since 1898. During their 109 years in existence, they have grown through natural growth, mergers, and acquisitions. This has allowed Nabisco to be the leading snack maker in the world. The Oreo chocolate sandwich cookie was first introduced in Hoboken, N.J. in 1911. Oreos today are far and away the world’s most popular cookie. The Oreo family accounts for approximately 10 percent of all store cookie sales--a $3 billion market. However in recent years Nabisco has been reluctant to adapt to current market trends. The company was focusing on producing new versions of existing products to make them more convenient. Situation Analysis In 1898, the New York Biscuit Company and the American Biscuit and Manufacturing Company merged over 100 bakeries into the National Biscuit Company, later called Nabisco. Founders Adolphus Green and William Moore, orchestrated the merger and the company quickly rose to first place in the manufacturing and marketing of cookies and crackers in America. To expand their global presence and to strengthen their position in the fast-growing consumer snacks sector, Philip Morris Co. Inc. acquired Nabisco Holdings in December 2000. Philip Morris purchased Nabisco for $14.9 billion in cash plus assumed $4 million in debt. Eventually, Philip Morris integrated the Nabisco brands with its Kraft Food operations. And now it includes brands such as Chips Ahoy, Fig Newtons, Mallomars...

...THE GREAT RECESSION Since publication of Robert L. Hetzel’s he Monetary Policy of the Federal Reserve (Cambridge University Press, 2008), the intellectual consensus that had characterized macroeconomics has disappeared. hat consensus emphasized eicient markets, rational expectations, and the eicacy of the price system in assuring macroeconomic stability. he 2008–2009 recession not only destroyed the professional consensus about the kinds of models required to understand cyclical luctuations but also revived the credit-cycle or asset-bubble explanations of recession that dominated thinking in the nineteenth century and irst half of the twentieth century. hese “market-disorder” views emphasize excessive risk taking in inancial markets and the need for government regulation. he present book argues for the alternative “monetary-disorder” view of recessions. A review of cyclical instability over the last two centuries places the 2008–2009 recession in the monetary-disorder tradition, which focuses on the monetary instability created by central banks rather than on a boom-bust cycle in inancial markets. Robert L. Hetzel is Senior Economist and Research Advisor in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, where he participates in debates over monetary policy and prepares the bank’s president for meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee. Dr. Hetzel’s research on monetary policy and the history of central banking has appeared in publications...
