Construction

...Management February 2003 Approved Prof. Roberto Pietroforte, Thesis Advisor Prof. Fredrick L. Hart, Head of Department Abstract The objective of the study was to map the structure of the construction engineering and management (CEM) discipline and its contents, trace its evolution, and to identify the most prevailing research areas in the discipline. The study entailed a review of the literature in construction engineering and management as well as two of the leading academic journals in the discipline, particularly a bibliometric study of the contents of the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering (JME), as a case study of the CEM refereed journals. The JME’s contents were investigated from its onset in 1985 until 2002. The results of the analysis show that 70% of the published papers focused on four main subjects: management and organization of the firm, project management, industry structure and environment, and management of personnel. Considerable changes occurred within the subjects with the emergence of new topics and the decline of others over the eighteen years of publication. The study also analyzed the use of keywords, research methods, and identified authors, and the concentration of knowledge. The JME is mainly concerned with the managerial aspects of engineering, while ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management (JCEM) focuses more on construction and technical issues. Additional studies of the JCEM’s contents should be conducted for a complete...

Thesis Statement

...How To Write a Thesis Statement What is a Thesis Statement? Almost all of us—even if we don’t do it consciously—look early in an essay for a one- or two-sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is to follow. We refer to that condensation as a thesis statement. Why Should Your Essay Contain a Thesis Statement? to test your ideas by distilling them into a sentence or two to better organize and develop your argument to provide your reader with a “guide” to your argument In general, your thesis statement will accomplish these goals if you think of the thesis as the answer to the question your paper explores. How Can You Write a Good Thesis Statement? Here are some helpful hints to get you started. You can either scroll down or select a link to a specific topic. How to Generate a Thesis Statement if the Topic is Assigned How to Generate a Thesis Statement if the Topic is not Assigned How to Tell a Strong Thesis Statement from a Weak One How to Generate a Thesis Statement if the Topic is Assigned Almost all assignments, no matter how complicated, can be reduced to a single question. Your first step, then, is to distill the assignment into a specific question. For example, if your assignment is, “Write a report to the local school board explaining the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class,” turn the request into a question like, “What are the potential benefits of using computers in a fourth-grade class?” After you’ve chosen the...

...Achievements, Future Challenges HOSPITALITY: A SOCIAL LENS: CHALLENGING THE EXISTING ORDER Paul Lynch University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom paul.lynch@strath.ac.uk Alison Morrison University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom ABSTRACT This paper locates developments in hospitality research, notably relating to hospitality studies, in the context of Kuhn’s (1962) evolution of scientific theory. The paper highlights the development of the ‘hospitality lens’ by Lashley, Lynch and Morrison (2007) and suggests it can facilitate the study of hospitality in any social situation from a strengthened social scientific perspective. It is argued that the study of hospitality should be not just for understanding hospitality but also society itself. Such an approach is suggested as both logical and healthy for the subject development with adoption of more critical perspectives on hospitality. The considerable implications of adopting a ‘new’ hospitality research agenda are described with reference to the conceptualization of hospitality, the nature of research and the research community, subject implications including journal publication outlets, and the higher education context. Keywords: Hospitality lens; ‘new’ hospitality; subject development. INTRODUCTION This paper moves beyond any pre-occupation with the vocational roots of hospitality higher education debate as it is considered that that debate has had its day. Rather, the content is framed within the discourse commenced by Kuhn (1962) who argues...

Research Paper

...Lesson Guide The Research Process In writing a research paper, you will use the skills you have already learned, such as summary, analysis, and synthesis. You will go beyond the readings in the text, however, to add breadth and depth to your paper. Depending on your topic, you might use library research for traditional sources, online research for Internet sources, field research, or a combination of the three. Each topic chapter provides a list of Research Activities at the end. These suggestions will guide you to source material outside the textbook and provide ideas for research papers. Additionally, make use of the topic chapter links provided on this Companion Website to find more readings on each subject. What follows is a list of the steps you will take in planning and writing a paper. Remember that writing is a recursive process; you will not necessarily follow these steps in this order, and you may find yourself backtracking and looping. Find a Subject. If a subject is not assigned to you, decide what subject you are going to research and write about. Your text provides you with a wealth of ideas to start with. Use it as a springboard for discovering ideas. Develop a Research Question. Formulate an important question that you would like to answer through your research. This helps you narrow and focus your topic. The answer to the research question will become your thesis statement. Conduct Preliminary Research. Industry Research Paper

...make or buy decision, loyalty to its supplier (in that case Symbian) and made a suggestion that Nokia should keep in mind alternative outsourcing. The subject is socially relevant and well described. As some new operating systems help mobile companies make profit, it’s a fact that Nokia has been a little bit desolated. This topic is both scientifically and socially relevant and easily researchable. Since Nokia and Symbian are both big companies, it is easier to find and collect information and references for the background information. The subject is linked to the theoretical framework. This proposal describes how Porter’s five forces are applied to Nokia. As it is said Symbian can be considered as an important external factor, which influences Nokia’s profits. The paper emphasises on the powers of suppliers in the five forces analysis and thus conclusions for the dependency of Nokia can be made. It also illustrates other forces in Porter’s model like the competitors force. The topic of the bargain power of consumers is also described well: Consumers choice is affecting Nokia’s profits since Nokia is missing the target market preferences as consumers lean towards high end phones and not the cheap supply Nokia has. However we think that the threat of new entries should be dealt in more detail. The topic of the research is clear and specific though it focuses a little too much on Symbian as the main factor. The “decreasing innovation and market share of Symbian” can be described...

Pepsi is one company that is totally committed to be on the track towards sustainability, considering area of protections as water treatment, Greenhouse gases (GHG) emission, sustainable agriculture, water recycling, social responsibility and others with the intention of increasing revenues while reducing the environmental impact that it causes. And FLD as part of this group has been thinking of the opportunity to implement some sustainable features within the company that are to strive for the same objectives. One of the strategies that they considered is about replacing the propane gas that they are using as the combustible with natural gas1, which in some way is more ecofriendly to use, due to the lower level of CO2 emissions that the burning produce. However, to be able to take the decision if the replacement should be done or not, there are many factors to consider, like, how viable would be this change for the company? which is what this paper is about. This paper covers the analysis...

Narrow down your topic to something that can really be worked within the boundaries of the paper. If the topic is already chosen for you, start exploring unique angles that can set your content and information apart from the more obvious approaches many others will probably take. Finally, whatever angle your topic takes, it should be both original in approach and insightful, something the reader will be drawn into and fascinated by. This is known in academia as "premature cognitive commitment". It can mar an otherwise good paper because an outcome that is pre-determined in your head, regardless of the research findings along the way, will be molded to fit the outcome, rather than the outcome reflecting a genuine analysis of the discoveries made. Instead, ask continuous questions about the topic at each stage of your research and writing and see the topic in terms of a "hypothesis" rather than as a conclusion. In this way, you'll be...

4 Types of Research Theories

...Charlotte Cordova October 6, 2011 American Intercontinental University Abstract In this paper, I will discuss the four types of research theories – deductive, inductive, grounded, and axiomatic. I will also discuss why and how these theories are used, and which is the most relevant, or most important. I will discuss the differences and similarities in theory and hypothesis. I will also discuss variables, and why they are important components of theoretical research. Four Types of Research Theories When doing research, it is important to first have your idea, or subject you will be researching. Once you have chosen the subject, then the research begins. There are so many places to go to use as sources. There are books, articles in magazines or newspapers, interviewing sources, and the ever growing internet. Personal experiences are another great way of getting information for your research. There are many ways to obtain information for your subject, but deciding on the subject to research is the first step. Then you need to decide how narrow or wide-ranged your topic is going to be. One example is Crime Scene Forensics. Will the paper be done on the entire subject of forensics, or will it be narrowed down to one element of forensics, such as DNA testing, or maybe ballistics? This is a decision that you will make before you start researching the subject. A very intelligent instructor, said to choose something that interests you and the researching will...

Research Plan

...Research Plan As part of your research plan, you must first draft a research question for your research paper that will guide the rest of your writing. A research question, which is more specific and focused than a general topic, is the question that your research paper will be answering. For example, if your general area of interest is social security, a possible research question might ask “How can low-income families save more money if the United States had a reformed social security plan that includes personal retirement accounts?” As you develop a research question, keep in mind that you will need to research sources to support your topic. Do not pick a one-sided question that will limit your research. Instead, develop a research question that lends itself to further exploration and debate—a question for which you genuinely want to know the answer. Try to pick a research question that is neither too broad, which covers too much, or too narrow, which covers too little. It should be broad enough to be discussed in a short research paper. What is your general topic or area of interest? My general topic is “Recycling”, which is one topic from the list provided in the syllabus. Recycling is an important part of my life, because I care deeply about our environment. I was taught to recycle at a young age, and was somewhat shocked to see how careless consumers are here in the United States, and the “throw-away” mentality most consumers have. What is it about your general...
