...RESEARCH AND PRACTICE Suicide Among Veterans in 16 States, 2005 to 2008: Comparisons Between Utilizers and Nonutilizers of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Services Based on Data From the National Death Index, the National Violent Death Reporting System, and VHA Administrative Records Ira R. Katz, MD, PhD, John F. McCarthy, PhD, Rosalinda V. Ignacio, MS, and Janet Kemp, RN, PhD Since the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, there has been increasing interest in suicide among American military veterans. This reflects a number of important issues. First, veterans constitute a sizeable population that has been identified as being at increased risk for suicide by some1,2 but not all,3 research studies. Second, there is increasing evidence that suicide may be a consequence of the stresses related to the experience of deployment and combat.4 Third, there have been concerns about the extent to which the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system, has addressed the needs of veterans, especially those who have returned from service in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since the start of OEF and OIF, there have been a number of reports on rates and risk factors for death from suicide among all American veterans, independent of whether they have received VHA health care services,1---3,5---9 as well as a greater number of reports on those who utilize VHA...

...Running head: TEEN SUICIDE IS AN EPIDEMIC Teen Suicide October 20, 2012 Introduction Every year, thousands of youth die in the Unites States and one million worldwide. Not from cancer or motor vehicle accidents by their own hand. For whatever reason they make that choice that they no longer want to live, and they take their own life. According to statistic, suicide has been known to be the third leading cause of death for young persons between the age of fifteen to twenty-four years; and it is the eleventh cause of death for persons of all ages in the United States. Many people think these are remote incidents, but they are not. Teen suicide is an epidemic that keeps on growing on daily basis. According to the estimate by the center for disease and prevention, annually, over five hundred thousand teenagers from age 15 to 24 will attempt to kill themselves and about five thousand of these teenagers succeeded (National Institute of Mental Health, 2002). Theses estimate indicated that the number of teenagers that committed suicide (five thousand) is synonymous to the number of people whom the cause of death was cancer or homicide. The number of teenagers, who committed suicide over the years, has outnumbered the number of teenagers who were killed by homicides by at least ratio three to two. That is ridiculous! To some people it sound unbelievable but as we continue to read various articles and continue to expose these occurrences on the internet...

...Introduction Throughout my life I have experienced many trials and tribulations, traveled to many states and countries, met great friends from all over and have been blessed to have a great family behind me. When my family decided to move to North Carolina following my eighth grade year, my life was soon to change. I was going to be immersed into a new southern culture which was completely unfamiliar but exciting to say the least. The thought of playing golf in the south, meeting new friends, and seeing what was forthcoming in fast approaching years was great. When I started school in Kinston, North Carolina in the fall of 2002 I began getting to know my classmates, the faculty and most importantly this new southern society I was immersed in. As the weeks and months went by there was something that caught my eye. It was evident at this extremely private prep school the norms and values everyone held dearest. The idea of going to college, being a “success” in life, getting married and eventually having kids was how we were structured. That was “normal.” When I started to notice how the “popular kids” treated the ones who weren’t as good looking or “got the girls” so to speak, I began to realize many things about our structured society. I began noticing what this alienation like behavior did to my fellow classmates both on the socialized level as well as their own self perception. It made them quiet, not in the “click”, lonely, and I assume ashamed about who they were...

...Teen suicide is the third-leading cause of death for 15- to 24-year-olds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov), after accidents and homicide. Parents should start understanding why teen suicide is important because parents never know if their child is having thoughts about committing suicide .Teen suicide is important because between bullying and domestic abuse teens struggle and go through challenging situations. For example, in school teens stress over how they look, what other people are thinking about them, and if they are cool. Also females often get into abusive relationships with boyfriends and they feel like they have no other way out but to kill themselves. Bullying has a big impact on teen suicide because kids are often picked on for no reason and they feel helpless. This leads to a lack of self-confidence and they may begin to...

...A Time to Die Assisted suicide should be legalized in the United States. It will put an end to the suffering of human life, let the families of the patients be at peace, and great doctors will not go to jail for helping another person move on. People think assisted suicide should be an option available to a patient; however, others strongly believe that due to many reasons it must not be accepted by society. In fact, five states have tried to legalize assisted suicide, but they were shot down. Also, three countries have legalized assisted suicide. They are Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. While it is true that the suicide braves death, he does it not for some noble object, but to escape some ill. People should be...

...presentation topic is the right to die, and I’m going to talk about the right to die, focusing on euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. First, I will explain the meaning of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. Euthanasia means a person who is suffering from terminally ill will be free from their illness or pain, and end their life by their own will. Physician-assisted suicide means the physician helps with the patient’s death. The problem of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide has been discussed all over the world these days, and I’m interested in the right to die, so I chose this topic. I have four questions for this topic. First, what countries are allowing euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide? Second, how many people...

...One current method that addresses the problem of the dramatically increasing adolescent suicide rates, is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which is a way of providing emotional support for teenagers and all people. This lifeline is a phone number one can call or an online chat one can engage in, in to order to get emotional support, have someone hear their story, and teach the help-seeker about the resources where he or she can get help. The conversations are entirely confidential, but if one is actively suicidal or trying to hurt himself or herself, the police may be called for their safety. This is an very beneficial form of support because at your most discouraged and disheartened times, it can be hard to reach out to people very...

...Brittanie Adams Professor Gibson-Lucas 1st Year Seminar 1 October 2015 Child Abuse and Suicide Child abuse and suicide, two of the most well-known topics worldwide for all the wrong reasons. When many people hear the words “child abuse” they easily assume it was some form of physical maltreatment, but child abuse is often sexual molestation of a child (“Sexual Abuse”). Suicide is known as the act of intentionally causing one's own death. Child abuse and Suicide are two completely different topics that are related in many different ways that most people are unaware of. In 1986 there were an estimated 155,900 cases of child sexual abuse identified by scientists, a 221% increase over 1980 (Finkelhor 79). When a perpetrator engages with a child this way, they are committing a crime that can have lasting effects on the victim for years. Child sexual abuse does not need to include physical contact between a perpetrator and a child. Sexual abuse on a child can range from obscene digital interaction to intercourse, even anything causing mental harm to the child/minor. Often times people picture a perpetrator as someone who is a stranger to the child or an adult, but the abuser is many times known by the child or family and has a relationship with the child. As many as 93% of victims under the age of 18 know the abuser (RAINN). Often times people wonder why the victims don’t speak up and it's not because they don't want to, but because the abuser threatens them with a number of...

...Suicide of Vietnam Veterans The deaths that were experienced in Vietnam due to Agent Orange and other jungle diseases have become well known by the general public. However, it is suicide that has resulted in the deaths of over 150,000 Vietnam soldiers during and after the war. An enormous amount of suicides resulted from what most people call “protecting our country”. The Vietnam War brought more than fifty-eight thousand deaths and is to some one of the darkest battles in United States history. If not killed during the war, many believe any Vietnam veteran would return home great and proud. But this is not the case. Many Vietnam veterans have committed suicide before, during, and after the war. Not only have these men and woman risked their lives for our country, but now, return different people and can not comprehend whether or not to continue their lives. Many people believe we win wars, when in actuality, no one does, especially those who serve in the armed forces (Suicide Wall, 11-10-2000). The Vietnam and other wars have mentally and sometimes physically dismembered many veterans. Another factor that plays a role in a war-related suicide is the addition of many on-site diseases such as defoliants, Agent Orange in particular. Made up of equal parts N-Butyl Ester 2,4,-D and N-Butyl Ester 2,4,5,-T, Agent Orange made many Vietnam soldiers go insane (Vietnam Veterans, 11-10-2000). This atrocious chemical lead and still today leads to death, deformation, and diabetes. Dr...

...Most of us can hardly imagine the suffering in the wake of the death of a young person but when this death is because of suicide the pain is even more compounding as there is no explanation. The reason why someone decides to take their own life still remains a mystery, the community are still disturbingly unaware of the prevalence of youth suicide until they experience it themselves. Although something can be done, with the introduction of suicide prevention programs to the Australian Curriculum, the education departments and its bodies would be seen as doing more towards the prevention of suicide. Youth suicide is the most concerning area of suicide and its destruction of young life has implications for the long-term affairs of our community. The Australian government identified this and in the 1995/96 commonwealth budget provided substantial funding, $13 million dollars with a combined total of $31 million by 1999. This initial funding lead to the creation of the National Youth Prevention Strategy administered by Department of Health with emphasis on promotion, prevention and early intervention. (Living is for everyone, 2008, p. 7) Since then many agencies have been proactively targeting youth suicide. In 2000 the National Youth Prevention Strategy expanded into Life is for Everyone (LIFE). LIFE is a world-class suicide and self-harm prevention resource. Dedicated to providing the best available evidence and resources to guide activities aimed at reducing the rate at which...
