Civilization has become a regular thing in daily life, but who were the first people to set up civilization? Without written records it is tough to know who were the first civilized people. "Civilization includes cities, government, social classes, religion, and writing" (Guisepi). If writ-ing is a part of civilization and we have found ancient writings, then why not study where the writings came from? Many archeologists have studied these writings and the civilizations who created them, and also the cities which those civilizations created. Based on the experts findings Sumerians had developed the earliest cities because Sumerians had developed the first civiliza-tion, which included forms of writing, religion,government, and social classes.…show more content… in the land between the Tigris and Euphra-tes rivers, called Mesopotamia. "Agricultural settlements were established along the banks of the two rivers and these soon grew into cities... Scholars believe that Uruk, one of these agricultural settlements, was the earliest city." (Crawford 101) Around 4th millennium B.C. the city of Uruk grew spectacularly, with temples and the invention of a type of writing called cuneiform, and the city was now about two square miles in area. They also built temples in the center of the city which showed that they had formed some type of religion. (Nardo 311)
The Sumerians had formed a social class system, which consisted of the higher class, a middle class, and a lower class. The higher class consisted of Kings and Priests who lived in lux-ury. The middle class consisted of scribes, merchants, and artisans. Most of the Sumerians were farmers, which was considered the lower class. Members of the higher class would live in a pal-ace usually, and members of the lower class would live in small straw houses which were crowded near each other and separated by narrow alleyways.
