In the letter from Abigail Adams to her son, John Quincy Adams, Abigail provides advice to her son on how the voyage will affect him. She uses an abstract comparison and through her tone and figure, and appeal to his emotions, she is able to her her intentions.
Abigail is able to illustrate the message that she wants him to learn and experience everything he can on this voyage. She compares what she wants to a “certain spring” which is “running through rich veins of minerals, improving their qualities as they pass along.” She expects nothing other than him improving his characteristic.
