Further proof of Equality’s brainwashed ideals is the fact that he doesn’t call himself a “he” but instead uses “we” when referencing to himself. Other people make fun of Equality for being too smart, too quick, or different in any way. They practice collectivism and for a majority of Equality’s life, he is persecuted for being unique. Teachers yell at him for having evil in his bones and even after he stops going to school, he is forced to be a Street Sweeper and readers pity him because he has no chance of a happy life if he continued to stay in his oppressive society. Equality forming his own moral judgement proves that he is staying honest to himself and prevents his mind from irrationality and creating a false sense of reality like the people in Anthem. For example, the Scholars refuse to take in Equality’s discovery of electricity because they have been taught that everyone is equal and using their flawed logic sense, they thought Equality believed he was higher than others.
