Everyone has people that care for them and help them out. The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver follows the early adulthood life of Taylor, and the baby given to her, Turtle. They travel through Kentucky, Illinois, and then stop in Tucson, Arizona where she meets, befriends, and starts to room with Lou Ann. She gets a job from her first acquaintance that she met in Tucson, Mattie, and meets Esperanza and Estevan who are refugees and illegals from Guatemala staying at Mattie’s. Eventually, the government finds out that Turtle is not Taylor’s daughter, so Taylor looks for the real parents but cannot find them, so she does the next best thing: Esperanza and Estevan pose as her parents.
