The essay, “Blaxicans,” by Richard Rodriguez claims that the culture someone is raised in is what should identify them, not their race. Rodriguez writes in his essay that what creates him is the “complexity of historical factors”(88). Rodriguez is trying to convey to the reader that the way someone is raised is what makes up a person's identity. He is trying to convey that if a person of any race is raised in a different from the race itself, then he is not to be identified by their race but by the way they were raised. Rodriguez also elaborates by giving a personal example about how he identifies himself as the culture around him. Rodriguez ends his essay by saying “I am Chinese“(92).
