In “Blue-Collar Brilliance” Mike rose argues how intelligence is measured by how we learn in our everyday lives not by the amount of education one has received. To the world the type of job a person took on would show how intelligent a person really was. “Intelligence is closely associated with formal education-the type of schooling a person ha, how much and how long- and most people seem to move comfortably from the notion to a belief that work requiring less schooling requires less intelligence” (p.276). Mike Rose believed that blue-collar jobs shouldn’t be seen as a job for “a bunch of dummies”(p.276) but instead be recognized for their skills and how they learn from experiences.

The first paper written in Dual Enrollment 112 was the Summary and Response paper. This paper was the foundation for our argumentive piece. Each student picked a topic that interested them, and summarized supporting articles from the They Say I Say books. I wrote on the topic that higher education is worth the price. My stance on higher education was supported by my points of the actual cost of college, benefits of obtaining a degree, and that college is a necessity. The required counterclaim in my writing, I think, strengthened my paper. My research concluded that college was not necessary to succeed and Blue Collar Brilliance by Mike Rose supported the counterclaim. An unclear thesis statement was one weakness of my paper. My points should have been clearly stated so it can be easily understood by the reader. The conclusion to my paper could have been strengthened with a better rebutted to the counterclaim. The summary and response paper lead the foundation for our Argumentive writing. Students were allowed to stick with the same topic or choose a different one if the summary and response influenced you to write differently.
