In chapter 7, Backlash, Royte begins out by explaining how in the past, storms have left many countries without fresh drinking water. Alice Waters, idol of the local foods movement and owner of Chez Panisse, decision on taking bottled water down from her menu started a rumbling against bottled water. Royte shows how many people were not against the water in the water bottles, but the amount of oil that is used to make them, which many people are unaware of. Even though, many chemicals were found in the bottled water, Waters shares that the water is indeed safe, at least by the government regulations. Bottled water is not required, by the Food and Drug Administration, to check for germs and viruses because it is spring water and it is said to not have these bacteria; unlike tap water, which is required to check for these organisms, by the Environmental Protection Agency. …show more content…
After leaving the plant, Royte visits the museum of Poland Spring. Then she goes into Fiji water and how it is bad for the environment. Pepsi is overall the company that uses the most plastic bottles, which brands the number one selling bottle water, Aquafina. Wanting to visit Pepsi, but instead Royte stays close and visits the second best-selling bottled water Dasani, manufactured by Coca-Cola. The International Bottled Water Association describes that most bottled water companies are not only competing with soda, but also trying to get rid of tap water. Much disagreement among managers, scientists, policy makers, and citizens arises from substantial differences in the way we think about human nature—about their strengths, frailties, intelligence, ignorance, honesty, selfishness, and generosity. In this paper we discuss five alternative models of human behavior that are commonly used (though usually implicitly). They are the Resourceful, Evaluative, Maximizing Model (REMM), Economic (or Money Maximizing) Model, Psychological (or Hierarchy of Needs) Model, Sociological (or Social Victim) Model, and the Political (or Perfect Agent) Model. We argue that REMM best describes the systematically rational part of human behavior. It serves as the foundation for the agency model of financial, organizational, and governance structure of firms. The growing body of social science research on human behavior has a common message: Whether they are politicians, managers, academics, professionals, philanthropists, or factory workers, individuals are resourceful, evaluative maximizers.
