Ancient China left behind many beautiful artefacts. Present day archeologists and scholars are constantly looking for new ways to interpret them. Craig Clunas shows that such objects have many different meanings. We shouldn’t look at them as solely products of art of craftsmanship. Usually aesthetic appearance is not the real purpose of the object, the essential aim of the artifact might be related to ritual rites, statement of power, or to afterlife concepts. Thus being said, each object must be studied in the broader cultural context of that time.
