The Indians and Europeans are divided but together in terms of the way Indians treated captives and those who lived amongst them voluntarily. In Dawnland Encounters, Calloway uses Davis’s journal to talk about how the captives were treated well and with comfort. Davis wrote “Indians with adoption in mind often showed their prisoners kindness and consideration once they were out of danger from pursuit” (Davis. 215) . In other words, the Indians treated the captives with kindness while they were there. This made the captives turn their back on the European culture and hybridize into the Indian culture. In addition, the way the Indians treated their captive woman with respect. Calloway uses Elizabeth Hanson’s story to explain how the women were
