A common person practicing a stable way of living does not have to be wary of the same risks, and situations as those in the favelas. Gordon Parks, a prominent documentary photojournalist, wrote “Flavio’s Home”, an article of comparing the life of a young boy named Flavio da Silva, and his family living in one of the most poverty based areas in Brazil, known as The Favelas. Also, including the journey of how Parks fights against poverty in any way possible, even if it meant taking in a boy doomed to die. The article was published in LIFE Magazine in 1961. Providing information and regards to how poverty in the world shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially in the case of Flavio. “Flavio’s Home” opened the eyes of many, especially on the line …show more content…
Parks rushes over and tries to think of a way to help, but notices the da Silvas acting normal. As if they didn’t mind it; as if they were used to it. Parks leaves Flavio be, and as time passes Flavio recovers, and begins to act as if it never happened. Parks decides that Flavio needs to see a doctor, so he takes him to the nearest clinic. While getting the checkup, the doctor pulls aside Parks and explains Flavio’s condition. Hearing the bad news, and trying to create a positive ideal for Flavio, Parks is devastated. It also applies emotional appeal to the points of Flavio having to bear the burden of carrying the family on his shoulders while being in a bad state of health. The article provides a new sense of what it truly means to have a responsibility towards others. “Flavio’s Home” is an eye opener towards its audience. It is also a motivator for those who speak about the problems of poverty, yet never take action. Parks was the sole existence of having a grudge and will to fight against poverty, which gave the article a more personal sense. Including the fact that Parks saw it all occur first

...Sickness all around, people dying on the corners of streets, holes in the homes of many, these are all topics expressed in the essay written by Gordon Parks, called “Flavio’s Home”. Parks writes about the topic of poverty and how it make him feel, as well as trying to appeal to people in developed countries and show them that they should appreciate all that they have. There are people in the developing countries that are dying of sickness by the thousands, and are living in literal shacks. Parks constantly uses these points to move forward with his ideas, and to make first world people think about how privileged they are. This is what Flavio’s home is about, only Parks uses a boy named Flavio de Silva to propel the story, and writes about...

...Living in the Favela’s in Rio de Janeiro can be a very labor-intensive experience. Once a person is old enough to work, they are either contributing to the family chores or out in the community making money. Even after a full day’s work, most people will only come home with about a dollar. Flavio’s father was once asked “How much do you earn a day?” and he responded by saying “Seventy-five cents. On a good day maybe a dollar.” (Parks). “Flavio’s Home” written by Gordon Parks, showed the daily life of the poverty stricken people of Rio. My goal for this essay is to explain the responsibilities of Flavio, the way of life in the Favela in the 1960s, and how things have changed since then. Flavio had the responsibilities of an adult at the age...
