In the book Inherit The Wind, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, three of the main charters, Rachel Brown, Bertram Cates, and Hennery Drummond all have their true selves revealed and developed throughout the book. Rachel Brown, who is the reverend's daughter and Cates Girlfriend, is on a journey of self-discovery and her charter as a person is really developed. Bertram Cates is a meek and humble school teacher who is arrested for teaching Darwin's theory of Evolution. In Inherit the Wind He learns to come out of his shell and begins to believe in his cause. In the onset of the book Drummond is shown as a sinister, corrupt man. When the town is speaking of him Reverend Brown describes him as, “A slouching hulk of a man, whose head juts out like an animal.” (Lawrence 28) this is referring to him as unwieldy. Clearly they do not think highly of him, in ancient Greek history a Minotaur is an evil creature with the head of an animal and body of a man. Subsequent to this when Drummond arrives in town it is revealed he is simply trying to protect Cates from the same estrangement he himself felt. Rachel is trying to figure out why Drummond is doing this and he says, “I know. I know what it feels like. Walking down an empty street… Doors locked against you.” (Lawrence 52) he wants to prevent this from happening to Cates, because he knows. Evidently the author sees it fit to show us the real Hennery Drummond, the one who cares, who doesn't want the same unfortunate fate to be cast upon another. In the conclusion of the story is gives another example of his true charter, a man who is honest and just wants to help other people. He even defends Brady against Hornbeck, “Because I refuse to erase a man's life? I tell you Brady had the same rights as Cates: the right to be wrong.” (Lawrence 127) he guarded his opposition's right. Clearly he was a good man who believed in equality, by defending even Brady he proves his intentions are to merely help and defend others.
