In the stories "La Bamba" by Gary Soto, and "A Boy Called Slow" by Joseph Bruchac, there are two characters that show similarities and differences. Manuel is a typical boy who wants to impress people, by the means of a talent show. Slow is a very determined, hardworking boy who wants to earn a new name. Manuel and Slow are similar characters that show common character traits of determination and bravery. However, they're different from each other in that Manuel is foolish and Slow is serious. Manuel shows determination when he volunteers for the talent show to impress his friends and family. "Why did I raise my hand? he asked himself. But in his heart, he knew the answer.
