Angela P. Busgith Essay #3 March 1, 2015 In Margery Wolf’s The House of Lim: A Study of a Chinese Family she talks about the family structure of a Chinese family living in Taiwan. It was very interesting to discover the differences in culture that took place in Taiwan and the United States. One of the biggest differences is that parents arrange the marriage of their children in Taiwan. Due to my cultural differences, I believe parents should not decide whom their children should marry. There are excellent examples of the consequences of arranged marriages in Wolf’s ethnography. A common tradition in the village was to adopt a daughter and later marry her to to her foster brother.
