In this article, Mason studies weight-based discrimination as well as the differences between men and women. Specifically, Mason tests the presence of statistical discrimination which is seen when the negative income effects of obesity decrease over time. In order to accurately test this Mason utilizes several variables including income (independent variable), obesity (BMI), education attainment, parenthood, work experience, and occupation. As well as control variables, such as family background and health conditions. Furthermore, results showed that women with a BMI over 30 experienced drastically lower incomes compared to their non-obese coworkers. Human Resource Management Final 6311

...HRM 6311 Final Project Human resource management continues to change as the nature of business changes. 20 years ago in the military, the primary focus was the accurate on time preparation of paperwork to include, evaluation reports, awards and orders to requisition and transfer equipment. There was a huge focus in the area of personnel management, which was mostly left to small team at local level. Lundy (1994) already believes that the personnel management role lacked strategic relevance because it was mainly an administrative-type role, whereas the modern concept of human resource management is much more strategic in scope. He states that human resource management came about due to a “change in the functions, boundaries, substance and objectives” of the original personnel management function (p. 693). A change came about within the military community when we became a nation at war for the past 12 years. As the strategic war fighting procedure changed so did the way our organization manages personnel. To have a successful operation, it is imperative that an organization has smart, self-motivated employees. In order to fill positions a carefully manage process must be used to advertise, recruit and select and retain these individuals. Human resource professional have to identify challenges, streamline their current HRM practices and determine if the methods employed are effective to current operations. Next, managers make recommendations to improve HR operations while being...

Race and Gender as Moderators

...journal is available at www.emeraldinsight.com/0268-3946.htm JMP 21,5 RESEARCH NOTE Income, the love of money, pay comparison, and pay satisfaction 476 Received June 2005 Revised February 2006 Accepted February 2006 Race and gender as moderators Thomas Li-Ping Tang Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Theresa Li-Na Tang Affinion Group, Brentwood, Tennessee, USA, and Beeta Yazmeen Homaifar Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center, Denver, Colorado, USA Abstract Purpose – This study aims to test a model of pay satisfaction and argue that the income-pay satisfaction relationship depends on one’s love of money and how one compares. Design/methodology/approach – The paper investigates: a direct path (income ! total pay satisfaction); an indirect path (income ! the love of money ! pay equity comparison ! total pay satisfaction) using a structural equation model (SEM) based on 210 full-time employees; and the model across race and gender in multi-group analyses. Findings – The paper finds that for the whole sample, there was one significant path (pay equity comparison ! total pay satisfaction). Since African-Americans ($32,073.15) and women ($32,400.58) tended to have lower income than Caucasians ($37,180.73) and men ($38,287.97), respectively, income significantly increased the importance of the love of money for African-Americans and females, but not for Caucasians and males. The love of money to pay equity...

Great Place to Work

...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This Report will detail my concept of how to create the ideal HR department for the ______________________as it pertains to the specific and unique needs of ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬-_________________, and how to make __________________ “great place to work.” HR Competencies Given that the nature of the work performed by ¬_________________ is independent and not collaborative in nature, it is well-suited to teleworking. When questions do arise or input is requested, it is done through email. It is not necessary that any of that work be conducted in the physical office of _______________________. Telecommuting and virtual offices benefit the company and the employee. As Pomeroy (2007) pointed out, companies can waste enormous amounts of financial resources on “unused space.” When employees are not sitting at their desks, that empty space is dead and expensive real estate. While every employee in ¬_________________ had their own desk, desktop computer, office space and land-line phone, only 3-5 were in the office on any give work day. -_________________, paid rent on the building, bought office furniture, paid utilities, purchased desktop computers, and incurred many other overhead expenses assuming everyone would be using the space on the daily basis. It would have been far cheaper to rent less office space to house support staff, have available “day use” offices for employees to use on those occasions when they wanted to work in the office and conference...

Review of Law in Context

...= additional material from lectures. ( ) = my comments. (See ‘x’) refers to book page number. A short (somewhat boring) message from the summary executioner before you dive in; These notes are an interpretation of the book Law in Context and the lectures given as part of the 1991 Course. They are not a satisfactory substitution for reading the text. You are only likely to get the maximum value out of this summary by reading it in conjunction with the text. The question of ‘the law in whose context’ may be worth keeping in mind as you read. This is an interpretation seen through my eyes, not yours. My comments are not unbiased, as it is as equally unlikely that yours may be. So my ‘advice’ is consider what is said here and in the book considering the need to understand the ‘mechanics’ that help make sense of the more involved themes that develop in the book as you progress through Law in Context. The observations, important in their own right, may be particularly useful for seeing how their often ubiquitous expression is taken as ‘normal’ in the areas of wider society, such as in discussions of economics and power. It is unlikely that you will find any ‘right answers’ from this summary, but I do hope it helps you in synthesising opinions. A bibliography of books I used is given at the end of this summary. If your head isn’t spinning too much, maybe it is worth getting together earlier in the semester with friends and talking about some of the issues...

...manufacturing paradigms have also received considerable attention in operations management literature. However, paradoxically, the extant literature is lacking in clarity and fails to delineate with sufficient precision how and why leanness and agility differ. Given the resource constraints within which most manufacturing firms have to operate today, it is useful, if not critical, to develop a good understanding of how these paradigms differ and what their constituent dimensions are. Such an understanding is also essential for developing and testing theories relating to leanness and agility. Through a literature review we discuss leanness and agility in two ways: (1) as manufacturing paradigms and (2) as performance capabilities. Our empirical study attempts to determine whether lean and agile forms occur with any degree of regularity in manufacturing plants. The results confirm the existence of homogeneous groups that resemble lean and agile performing plants, and they identify important differences pertaining to their constituent performance dimensions. The results indicate that while the pursuit of agility might presume...

Secrecy Surrounding the Practice of Female Circumcision in Mabvuku and Tafara Surburbs

...Tafara suburbs because there are people of different ethnic groups with varying customs and values that shape their behaviour and way of life. Mabvuku and Tafara have an unusually high concentration of people of Malawian, Mozambican and Zambian origin who migrated to seek work mostly before the Zimbabwean independence. Due to this diversity, women and girls who have undergone female circumcision were interviewed. Mabvuku is a high-density suburb some seventeen kilometres east of Harare. It is classified as a suburb or township of Harare, with the Harare City Council constituting local government. This inquiry is exploratory, descriptive and qualitative in nature, based on interviews with women who had undergone the practice in Mabvuku-Tafara. The inquiry can be termed therefore, a qualitative research done through a case study design. This research method is preferred because the researcher is exploring a subjective understanding of social reality rather than a statistical description of generalized ideas. The quest is to discover a socially constructed reality from the viewpoint of the people being studied. This research presents female circumcision in its cultural context to understand the ethical motivations of this on-going practice and the reasons why it is secretive in nature. 1.1 BACKGROUND The attempt to define the practice of...

Migration Towards Eu: Welfare Magnet

...was written by myself and that all presented results are my own, unless stated otherwise. The literature sources are listed in the Literature Review section. Prague, September 30th, 2015 ........................................................ Signature Key words Migration, welfare magnet, public social spending, inflows of migrants, EU’s migratory policy, European welfare system, Turkish welfare system, Turkey, EU-15, gravity model, fixed effect, random effect, Hausman test, country specific fixed effect, time specific fixed effect. Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to analyse which factors drive migration from Turkey towards Europe and whether the welfare benefits play a major role in the decision making process. The analysis is based on a gravitation model of migration in log-log form. The FE and RE methods were employed as estimation techniques and the Hausman test enabled to distinguish them. The present problem of heteroscedasticity was solved by adjusting the model with robust standard errors. The most important determinants appear to be individual’s income which immigrants can earn in the states of the EU-15 and welfare benefits provided by the EU-15. The number of acquisition of citizenship, as a proxy for migration policy of countries the EU-15, plays also important role. The...

Women

...12:06 Page 1 WOMEN, GENDER AND WORK People are not defined solely by their work, nor is it possible to ignore the effects of factors outside the workplace on a person's status at work. To seek equality at work without seeking equality in the larger society – and at home – is illusory. Thus an examination of the issues surrounding women, gender and work must be holistic. That means considering the role of productive work in life as a whole and the distribution of unpaid work as well as the myriad questions relating to employment. This important anthology brings together the thinking of leading philosophers, economists and lawyers on this complex subject. Selected recent articles from the multidisciplinary International Labour Review are assembled for the first time to illuminate questions such as how we should define equality, what equal opportunity means and what statistics tell us about differences between men and women at work, how the family confronts globalization and what is the role of law in achieving equality. There is an examination of policy – to deal with sexual harassment and wage inequality, for example, as well as part-time work, the glass ceiling, social security, and much more. A major reference on the best of current research and analysis on gender roles and work. Bullying

...BULLYING BOYS: AN EXAMINATION OF HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY IN THE PLAYGROUND Dr L Trickett1 ABSTRACT Violence between young men, particularly resulting from the emergence of a so called ‘gun and knife culture’, is currently subject to extensive media coverage in UK2. Alongside this there has been increased anxiety about both the scale and impact of bullying in schools (Cawson et al, 2002; Tyler, 2002). These issues form part of a more generalised concern about men and boys in Britain often referred to as a ‘crisis of masculinity’ (see Clare, 2000). This article examines findings from research with male respondents about their relationship with hegemonic masculinity (Connell, 1987, 1989, 1995, 2005) and bullying whilst at school and makes suggestions as to what can be done to tackle abusive behaviour amongst boys and young men. 1 Dr Loretta Tricket is a Senior Lecturer and researcher with the Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University, UK. 2 See Lockhart, G; McClory, J and Qvortrup, M. (2007) Gun and Knife Crime in Great Britain, Policy Exchange, Research Note. Knife crime is a fact of life for teenagers (Bryony Gardon, telegraph.co.uk, 31 May 2008). 2 Introduction This article is in five parts. Part One outlines the theoretical background to the research. Part Two describes the methodology and the participants. Part Three discusses different types of bullying and the factors that were associated with them. Part Four discusses resistance...

Negative impacts of the current operation and strategy (or lack thereof), has further emphasized this need. There are several potential solutions for this type of problem; however decisions for a company of this size should be made through careful analysis. There are many collaboration tools that could provide significant advantages to InnoBus in its effort to address the need for improved operation. Any potential solution would need to come through a high-scientific analysis that enables the owner of the company (Mr. de Koning) to review, maintain, share and synchronize at any level. Marketer

...Q1: Significance and Diversity of Consumer Behavior: * Definition of Consumer Behavior: Consumer Behavior is the study of individuals, groups, or organizations and the processes they use to select, secure, use, and dispose of products, services, experiences, or ideas to satisfy needs and the impacts that these processes have on the consumer and society. It blends elements from psychology, sociology, social anthropology, marketing and economics. It attempts to understand the decision-making processes of buyers, both individually and in groups such as how emotions affect buying behavior. It studies characteristics of individual consumers such as demographics and behavioral variables in an attempt to understand people's wants. It also tries to assess influences on the consumer from groups such as family, friends, sports, reference groups, and society in general. Customer behavior study is based on consumer buying behavior, with the customer playing the three distinct roles of user, payer and buyer. Research has shown that consumer behavior is difficult to predict, even for experts in the field. Marketing is an influential asset for customer behavior analysis as it has a keen interest in the re-discovery of the true meaning of marketing through the re-affirmation of the importance of the customer or buyer. A greater importance is also placed on consumer retention, customer relationship management, personalization, customization and one-to-one marketing. Social functions can be...
