In his book Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys, Victor Rios examines the lives of forty black and Latino boys as he shadows them throughout their daily lives in Oakland, California. For three years, he spent his day following around a participant as they walked him through their daily routines. In many instances, they would be confronted by police, or witness some form of racial criminalization. He also grew up in this harsh environment of intense policing and unnecessary prejudices, which is why he wanted to go back and figure out how this system is affecting the futures of these youth. Rios knew what it was like to be unfairly discriminated against by police, school officials, and other authority figures. Despite his circumstances, …show more content…
It opens up with a personal story about how he and one of his participants were approached by police and ordered throw their food away, searched, handcuffed, and questioned for no reason at all. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence throughout the book. This is one of the first times that you really understand that no matter what the teenagers are doing, they are already a target to police because of their race. Listening to these firsthand experiences from the boys opened my eyes to how much more of a victim they are than a criminal. In many situations, they feared for their own safety, so they would do whatever was necessary to avoid it; this included places like school. This shows you how real the cycle of victimization actually is. You're afraid to go to school, you eventually get kicked out of school, you're no longer getting an education, and you spend your time in more negative and potentially dangerous situations. The author did a great job of combining critical criminology and urban ethnography in this study to understand how power, society, and culture worked together to determine the outcomes of these people's lives. By recruiting a mixture of different ethnicities, family lives, criminal backgrounds, and social experiences, he was able to both compare them and include an idea of how the population treated them as a whole. I feel like it was helpful for him to be both an outsider and an insider in this situation. Yes, he was from that area and would be treated harshly at times, but he was also a graduate student who was conducting a social experiment with a better situation than these young people. It was also beneficial to them to have a positive influence in their life showing them that they can go from a life of crime and break the cycle of victimization. Bloodlines of the Illuminati

...Bloodlines of Illuminati by: Fritz Springmeier, 1995 Introduction: I am pleased & honored to present this book to those in the world who love the truth. This is a book for lovers of the Truth. This is a book for those who are already familiar with my past writings. An Illuminati Grand Master once said that the world is a stage and we are all actors. Of course this was not an original thought, but it certainly is a way of describing the Illuminati view of how the world works. The people of the world are an audience to which the Illuminati entertain with propaganda. Just one of the thousands of recent examples of this type of acting done for the public was President Bill Clinton’s 1995 State of the Union address. The speech was designed to push all of the warm fuzzy buttons of his listening audience that he could. All the green lights for acceptance were systematically pushed by the President’s speech with the help of a controlled congressional audience. The truth on the other hand doesn’t always tickle the ear and warm the ego of its listeners. The light of truth in this book will be too bright for some people who will want to return to the safe comfort of their darkness. I am not a conspiracy theorist. I deal with real facts, not theory. Some of the people I write about, I have met. Some of the people I expose are alive and very dangerous. The darkness has never liked the light. Yet, many of the secrets of the Illuminati are locked up tightly simply because secrecy is a way...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...

Football, Violence and Social Identity

...Downloaded by [University of Ottawa] at 14:44 24 March 2014 Football, Violence and Social Identity Downloaded by [University of Ottawa] at 14:44 24 March 2014 As the 1994 World Cup competition in the USA again demonstrates, football is one of the most popular participant and spectator sports around the world. The fortunes of teams can have great significance for the communities they represent at both local and national levels. Social and cultural analysts have only recently started to investigate the wide variety of customs, values and social patterns that surround the game in different societies. This volume contributes to the widening focus of research by presenting new data and explanations of football-related violence. Episodes of violence associated with football are relatively infrequent, but the occasional violent events which attract great media attention have their roots in the rituals of the matches, the loyalties and identities of players and crowds and the wider cultures and politics of the host societies. This book provides a unique cross-national examination of patterns of order and conflict surrounding football matches from this perspective with examples provided by expert contributors from Scotland, England, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, Argentina and the USA. This book will be of interest to an international readership of informed soccer and sport enthusiasts and students of sport, leisure, society, deviance and culture. Richard Giulianotti, Norman...
