Hypothesis: (What do you think will happen?) I think a styrofoam cup will hold 34 pennies/passengers before it sinks. I think this because styrofoam might be stronger material than the standard 3cm cup.
Materials: (What do you need?)
Pen/pod
Notebook/Chromebook
Styrofoam cup/boat
Paper towels
Bucket of water
Pennies

Observations to the Characteristics of Diffusion

...Observations on the Characteristics of Diffusion A Scientific Paper Submitted to Professor Christina Barazona College of Science and Mathematics - Department of Biological Sciences Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology Andres Bonifacio Avenue, Tibanga, 9200 Iligan City, Philippines By Janna R. Andalan August 2013 ABSTRACT The Experiment conducted involves diffusion. The point of this experiment was to know the characteristics of diffusion and to formulate hypothesis based on diffusion. It has also a purpose to see whether the diffusion is dependent on distance, rate and molecular weight of the substance. The estimation of distance is predicted by getting the average of the substance. Rate is predicted by subtracting the final diameter to initial diameter and dividing it by time. It is determined that there are three things which influence the movement of molecules such as kinetic energy, nature of the environment and size of the molecules. By this, we know which dye diffused at the fastest rate by measuring the diameter of the colored area immediately after adding the substance to the agar plate. After one hour of measuring the methylene blue by 15 minutes interval, the substance moved immediately in 0min until 45minutes, the remaining minutes remains the same. While on the potassium permanganate, the substance moved from 0minutes to 1hour. These happened because they had different molecular weight and also the size of the substance...

Evolution Of Healthcare Delivery System

...Medical services in pre-industrial America were very different. During the civil war, Medicine and science were not grounded in science (Cutter, 1922). Primitve medical procedures were often used. People relied on family members, neighbors and publications for remedies for ailments. Physicians were usually paid by personal funds. The first hospital built in North America was in 1524 by Hernan Cortez (Cutter, 1922). It is said that Cortes had a medical facility alongside a congregation which aided poor local Mexicans and the Aztec troopers who were injured in the wake of battling with the Spanish. It was also the first hospital to do autopsies, which helped to teach anatomy to medical students. As the years progressed, . In the 1700s, cities started building isolation almhouses were were used to tend to the sick and infirm. However, these almhouses were...

Ufo Cover-Up?

...The UFO phenomenon has become one of the most controversial and culturally embedded supernatural beliefs to emerge in the Western world during the later half of the twentieth century. Reports of strange flying objects in the sky have been recorded from the dawn of human history. The earliest UFO sightings can be found in 4th century Chinese texts, claiming that a "moon boat" hovered above China every 12 years. Other enthusiasts cite the Book of Ezekiel, in which an inquisitive ship dropped from the sky and landed in Chaldea, modern-day Kuwait. A flourish of sightings occurred near Rome in 218 B.C. and again in Germany in 1561. During World War II, Allied pilots coined the term foo fighters for the bizarre orbs of light that flew alongside their planes during combat (Stephey, 2009). Although sightings have been reported for centuries, it was the sighting by American Pilot Kenneth Arnold in 1947 that sparked the current public interest in the UFO phenomenon. Days later, the foundations of today’s UFO beliefs were perpetuated by a report that the U.S. Army had recovered alien bodies and a crashed “flying disk” in Roswell, New Mexico. The press originally reported the recovered material was from a UFO, however higher military authority quickly dismissed this report. The United States Air Force (USAF) claims the downed aircraft was a top-secret weather balloon designed to spy on Soviet forces. This retraction from the USAF caused people to question the events that took place in...

Avatar Commentary

...Avatar is an American science fiction film written by James Cameron in 2009. The film is set in 2154 on Pandora, a moon in the star system, inhabited by the Navi, a blue-skinned species of natives. Physically, they are stronger and taller than humans and they live in harmony with the nature. Humans intend to exploit Pandora’s reserves of a precious mineral, but that threatens the existence of the Navi and the Pandora ecosystem. Humans have two solutions to achieve their goal: the first one is to improve relations with the natives to convince them to leave their forest and the second one is the war. Thus, scientists grow Navi bodies modified with human DNA, called Avatars, that are controlled by mentally-linked human operators in order to get in touch with the Navi. Jake Sully is one of these avatar operators and succeeds to be a member of the natives and consequently he becomes to be a spy. Indeed, he delivers key strategic information to the human militaries and moreover he discovers that the Navi will never leave their forest owing to their way of living in harmony with the nature. While humans decide to begin the war against the natives, Jake Sully develops strong attachments to Pandora and its inhabitants so he decides to change ends and to fight against the human attack. After a short summary of this film, I am doing some commentaries of it. This science fiction film isn’t so unreal to the contemporary world. In the film, the war begins owing to a precious mineral...

Mis - Write Up on Latest Technology by Ibm

...n-brain--skynet-and-terminator-next/ Author: Jason Kennedy Date: October 27, 2011 Summary: The article describes how latest research by IBM shows that computers may soon be able to match human brains. When it comes to storage, machines have long surpassed human’s capacity and in terms of mathematics, fast computers beat us by far in solving complex equations. However, (at least until now) humanity wins in the brain’s sheer computational power and energy efficiency. IBM’s Blue Gene supercomputer has already outclassed the processing power of some animals like mice, rats and cats. Of the 20 billion neurons and the connecting 200 trillion synapses the human brain contains, IBM’s Blue Gene simulated about 4.5%. By 2019, the company is confident to have equaled the processing power of one entire human brain. Analysis: Certainly this topic puts a lot of people on edge. We may all have heard about Moore’s Law of computers suggesting that a PC’s processing capacity will drastically increase over the years but the fact that our society may reach a point where computers are intelligent enough to make themselves smarter through repetition and design, and eventually outperform humanity is intimidating and needs to be discussed. Like we talked about it in class, where will this lead to? Will we experience a real-life matrix fighting machines à la “I, Robot”? Will we all be part of science fiction, with the difference that fiction has become reality? We should all be open to...

Problem Solving Investigation in Analytical Chemistry

...Chem 001: Problem Solving Investigation in Analytical Chemistry PROBLEM Are red flowers really red? Two students were having an argument about pigments in red flower. One said that red petals can only contain the red color, whereas the other students thought that the red color could actually be a mixture of color. Plan an experiment to investigate if the pigment in red flowers consists of one or more colors. In your investigation think about how you can extract the pigment and check whether it consists of one or more color. PLAN FOR INVESTIGATION A. Purpose of the Investigation The purpose of this investigation is to know whether the pigment in red flowers consist one or more colors. The goal of this experiment is to analyze the pigments found in flowers using paper chromatography. B. Materials/ Apparatus The materials used in this experiment include filter paper, scissors, pencil, ruler, clean jar or drinking glass, large- mouth glass jar, water (at least 60 mL, distilled water is preferable, but tap water is also suitable), 70% isopropyl alcohol, measuring cup, piece of scratch paper, coin, timer or clock, and of course red flower petals. You will need at least 2 flower petals from at least 3 different plants. Tip: Larger petals work better than smaller petals. C. Steps/ Procedure Cut the chromatography filter paper into strips that are about 2 cm wide and as long as the large-mouth glass is tall (the strips should all be the same size). You will...
