...Running head: UNV-501: ARTICLE SUMMARY UNV-501: Article Summary Melissa Osborne Grand Canyon University Title: UNV-5: Article Summary This article titled “Read-only participants: a case for student communication in online classes” discussed the importance of communication in online courses as well as the reasons why students succeed or fail in these online courses. To obtain answers to the concerns previously listed, an 8 week study of students in an online class was conducted. This study consisted of monitoring online communication and classroom activity among students with different backgrounds with geographical location and age being two of the main contributing factors. From this study, results of both success and failure were discovered and documented. From the aspect of success, the following results were found: First, classes that had online discussion helped students that would normally be introverts in a traditional class, to be active in discussions. Second, this type of class helped to improve the learning of students by creating questions and answers (in the form of posts) of high critical thinking skills. Third, online discussions that were developed created a community of support and healthy interaction (L. Nagel, et al., 2007). Fourth, the facilitator (professor) that was very interactive with his class became a great asset to the online class because he provided feedback and affirmations to the students through posted replies. Student Athletes Article Review

...A Conceptual Model of Academic Success for Student-Athletes Summary Student-athletes are a nontraditional group burdened with many demands and expectations. Collegiate sports are a popular mass commercial form of entertainment and generate millions of dollars. NCAA Division 1 sports generated 751 million dollars in revenue this year at the expense of student-athletes’ academic goals. Graduation rates for athletes are lower than traditional groups. Support services have not consistently or effectively enhanced learning and personal development of student-athletes. Analysis Athletes spend 40 hours a week on sport related activities decreasing time for academic pursuits and productive activities. This time is spent with other athletes and coaching staff which impairs personal development and social integration. The rigorous schedule leads to physical exhaustion and nagging injuries. This hampers attention to educational pursuits and goal attainment. Educational Importance Colleges and universities have a duty to provide the best educational experience possible for its students. Education should not take a backseat to sports on campuses across the country. Individual, multilevel, and culturally relevant curriculum and programs should be developed to promote personal, social, and academic success for student-athletes. These programs need to ensure that athletes can compete not just in sports but in life. Reference Comeaux, E. & Harrison, K. (2011). A conceptual...

The purpose of this article is to explain what the researchers conducted in an eight-week analysis of students from the online module. The analysis used the strategy to observe online communication and classroom activity used by the student’s primary dynamics like diversity, geography, and maturity. Additionally, the data gathered by Nagel et al (2009) about the scholar’s success and failures were documented. When they had a completed online module they concluded that the modules that had the discussion forums invited the student’s to be proactive in interaction with fellow students and the instructor. By writing quality responses, a student’s sense of community is established and communication is improved. ...Summary of Online Degrees Could Be a Good Fit for Some In the article Online Degrees Could Be a Good Fit for Some Teens Briana Boyington is portraying that there is no correct type of college. There are different options for a different variety of learners and their different circumstances; whether it be a job, financial instability, or a student just needs relief from classroom learning. These options include four year universities, community colleges, and online degree programs. There are positives and negatives for every option. A few negatives for online degree programs is students lose some of the social interactions with other students and faculty that occur when attending school on campus. Employers are sometimes weary of hiring students that only have an online degree, campuses that offer both online and in class learning are looked at more highly. It is made clear in this article that online learning is a robust choice for a student who is self-determined, not likely a successful path for a student who has struggled in the classroom. When graduating high school online degree programs aren’t typically broadcasted, or encouraged. Most teenagers are set on living the college life so to speak. Boyington suggests that even though online learning is not the typical pathway, it could be a great path to success for many students who can’t go away to college as initially planned. A good online school would be one that inspires students to interact and get as close to an...
