The nature of the controversy In 2012, the United States Olympic team sparked controversy by wearing uniforms manufactured in China. Manufacturing fashion garments locally have been more expensive than manufacturing overseas. American designer Ralph Lauren has been the center of this controversy since he has been the Olympics top designer. Many luxury designers other than Ralph Lauren have become dependent on producing textiles abroad due to the domination of fast fashion in the apparel industry. In 2012 the large political debate was over the loss of American manufacturing jobs. After Ralph Lauren’s designs were brought to American attention companies like Nike were also critized on whether their products were made in America.

Gender and Advertising

...C H A P T E R 7 Gender and Advertising How Gender Shapes Meaning The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, “It’s a girl.” —Shirley Chisholm Men are dogs and women are cats. Women are from Venus and men are from Mars. Writers, filmmakers, psychologists, and advertisers all have used the idea that men and women are different to develop stories, create conflict, and provide persuasive imagery. Not only do advertisers view men and women differently, but men and women also bring different perspectives to advertising. Thus, we can assume that men and women create dif-ferent meanings from the advertisements they see. Gender roles in our society have changed dramatically since the 1950s, and portrayals of men and women in advertising have been researched since nearly the same time. Researchers have consistently sought to evaluate these roles to examine whether advertising has kept up with societal changes. In this chapter, we examine the different ways men and women view advertising and mes-sages, as well as some of the ways that advertising portrays gender roles today. The last several decades have seen changes in the role of women in society, both as those who earn money and those who spend money. In 1940, women comprised about 20% of the workforce in the United States, while today that percentage reaches 50% (U.S. Department of Labor, 2000). In addition, the family structure in the United States has changed: smaller...

We expect "winners will continue to win" in the luxury industry. LVMH with its material scale advantage, leading brand portfolio, balanced category and geographic exposure is set to dominate over competitors in the long term. LVMH's mega-brands and scale advantage is particularly relevant in fashion and leather goods. We expect this area to continue to provide material top-line and earnings growth. ...Chapter Two The Fashion Market and the Marketing Environment 2.1 Introduction A market is a place for buying and selling, for exchanging goods and services, usually for money. The fashion market is unusual because until early in the twentieth century it was almost solely the domain of kings, queens, aristocrats and other important people. As will be seen, great changes, mainly due to technology and increasing globalization, mean that we now have a fashion marketplace open to everyone. Fashion can be a reflection of the time, from the utilitarian clothing of the war years to the yuppie look of the buoyant 1980s. Fashion also can be a reflection of individuals. Clothes are often chosen to reflect among other factors our age, gender, lifestyle and personality. Because fashion is both a reflective and yet creative discipline, it is necessary for fashion marketers to be aware of the factors surrounding the market and develop a broad understanding of the issues that can affect the garments that are seen in any high street store. 2.2 The development of the fashion market 2.2.1 Origins of the modern fashion market Until relatively recently, fashion had always been élitist and was used by its adopters to show that they were above the common people. Even the inventions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; the spinning jenny, the water frame and the sewing machine have not had as great an effect on the market as have cultural changes and the explosion of the...

...PART ONE Introducing The Contemporary Business World In the Opening Cases in Chapters 1 to 5, you will read about five situations that may seem to have little in common at first glance: Canadian megaprojects that focus on the extraction of oil and nickel, the importance of productivity for our standard of living, the unethical behaviour of some business managers, entrepreneurs starting new businesses, and the exporting of Canadian goods and services to other countries. All of these situations, and many more that are described in this text, have a common thread—they all demonstrate the key elements of business as well as the excitement and complexity of business activity. Each case tells a part of the story of our contemporary business world. Part One, Introducing the Contemporary Business World, provides a general overview of business today, including its economic roots, the environment in which it operates, the importance of entrepreneurship, the various forms of ownership of business firms, the globalization of business, and the ethical problems and opportunities facing business firms. ■ We begin in Chapter 1, Understanding the Canadian Business System, by examining the role of business in the economy of Canada and other market economies. We also present a brief history of business in Canada. Then, in Chapter 2, Understanding the Environments of Business, we examine the external environments that influence business activity. These include the economic, technological...
