The scene highlights the difficult labors and prevailing strength of the common man. The somewhat muted colors in the foreground, around the work area, seem to indicate a slight distain for manual labor. The brighter colors in the background highlight the natural setting, displaying areverence for nature, while at the same time framing the subject. The subject, Lincoln, is standing tall, displaying confidence and power. An open book is seen in the foreground shows that the artist values education and knowledge. A Case Analysis for “the Vidsoft Triangle (a)”

...A Case Analysis for “TheVidSoft Triangle (A)” A Case Analysis for “The Vidsoft Triangle (A)” I. Summary In what could prove to be his defining moment, Alaji Babatunde, senior technical support manager of a medium-sized & multicultural software company, is facing a crucible in the form of an interpersonal conflict in one of his teams which necessitates his quick but calculated decision that would impact the employees‟ harmonious & effective interaction in his department and that could question the integrity of a procedurally correct business decision he made. Discerning the conflict‟s apparent origins & consequences and considering probable answers will lead Alaji to an evenhanded resolution to this intense trial and secure against a potential repeat. II. Analysis When VidSoft Technologies, an internet company, opened in 1996 it was developing enterprise software focusing on procurement for its customers. Both its revenues and employee base increased after going public in 1999. The rapid growth of the company could be mainly attributed to the customer-centric corporate strategy and team-oriented work culture that was introduced and implemented by the organization‟s mild-mannered and charismatic CEO, Keith Nash. Teams are highly treasured in the company. They satisfy most employees‟ need for affiliation as McClelland‟s theory of needs explains (Robbins & Judge, 2009:180). Teams in the company can be classified as self-managed as they „can not only solve problems but implement...

...Clausewitz: In Praise of Hate ACT 1, SCENE VIII. A field of battle. MARCIUS I'll fight with none but thee; for I do hate thee. AUFIDIUS We hate alike: Not Afric owns a serpent I abhor More than thy fame and envy. Fix thy foot. The Tragedy of Coriolanus William Shakespeare Over the last fifteen years, the U.S. government has wrestled continuously with how properly to approach the ongoing phenomena of burgeoning regional terrorism and global insurgency. In an effort to cognitively frame the rising power of ethnic and racial groups resident in formerly weak or powerless states that are the main sources of current conflict, it has settled upon characterizing the new operational environment as “complex.”1 To some, this characterization may seem to imply that the socio-political and socio-cultural operational environments in which military forces had to operate previously were not complex; that the operational environments in which such conflicts as the American Civil War, World War I or II, or Vietnam were fought were simpler. Irrespective, the reason the now somewhat voguish term complex may have gained its current ascendancy in the lexicon is that it expiates semantically the frustration strategists and policy makers feel toward pesky conflicts not only in Iraq and Afghanistan waged by resilient adversaries, but emerging conflagrations throughout the Middle East and Africa led by stateless entities such as Al Qaida and the Islamic State that they...

Freud, the ‘Uncanny’, 1919

...3673 THE ‘UNCANNY’ (1919) Freud - Complete Works. Ivan Smith 2000. All Rights Reserved. 3675 THE ‘UNCANNY’ I It is only rarely that a psycho-analyst feels impelled to investigate the subject of aesthetics, even when aesthetics is understood to mean not merely the theory of beauty but the theory of the qualities of feeling. He works in other strata of mental life and has little to do with the subdued emotional impulses which, inhibited in their aims and dependent on a host of concurrent factors, usually furnish the material for the study of aesthetics. But it does occasionally happen that he has to interest himself in some particular province of that subject; and this province usually proves to be a rather remote one, and one which has been neglected in the specialist literature of aesthetics. The subject of the ‘uncanny’ is a province of this kind. It is undoubtedly related to what is frightening - to what arouses dread and horror; equally certainly, too, the word is not always used in a clearly definable sense, so that it tends to coincide with what excites fear in general. Yet we may expect that a special core of feeling is present which justifies the use of a special conceptual term. One is curious to know what this common core is which allows us to distinguish as ‘uncanny’ certain things which lie within the field of what is frightening. As good as nothing is to be found upon this subject in comprehensive treatises on aesthetics, which in general prefer to concern...

Leadership for the 21st Century

...RENAISSANCE LEADERSHIP Transforming Leadership for the 21st Century J. Martin Hays and Choule Youn Kim THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY Key Words: |Leadership |Management Education |Future Trends | |Leadership Development |The New Millennium |Leadership Competencies | ABSTRACT Conventional leaders and leadership of the past are insufficient to meet the demands of the 21st Century. As we enter the new millennium, our world is characterised by unprecedented complexity, paradox, and unpredictability. Change is rapid and relentless. Today’s leaders face demands unlike any ever before faced. Standard leadership approaches that have served us well throughout much of history are quickly becoming liabilities. Conventional wisdom regarding leadership and many of its habits must be unlearned. The strong, decisive, charismatic, and independent leader and leadership we have idealised, strived to be, depended upon, and longed for may prove counter-productive in the new millennium and undermine a sustainable future. The challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century call for a new type of leader and leadership, indeed an entirely new and different way of thinking about leadership and of developing future leaders. This paper explores the nature of the nascent millennium and the leader and leadership qualities and capabilities...

Cognitive Poetics

...This page intentionally left blank This practical coursebook introduces all the basics of semantics in a simple, step-bystep fashion. Each unit includes short sections of explanation with examples, followed by stimulating practice exercises to complete the book. Feedback and comment sections follow each exercise to enable students to monitor their progress. No previous background in semantics is assumed, as students begin by discovering the value and fascination of the subject and then move through all key topics in the field, including sense and reference, simple logic, word meaning, and interpersonal meaning. New study guides and exercises have been added to the end of each unit (with online answer key) to help reinforce and test learning. A completely new unit on non-literal language and metaphor, plus updates throughout the text, significantly expand the scope of the original edition to bring it up-to-date with the modern teaching of semantics for introductory courses in linguistics as well as intermediate students.
