In “The Moths,” the narrator’s struggle with identity and religion allows her to embrace an unconventional approach to life. Her beloved abuelita (grandmother), Mama Luna, encourages her to explore nondenominational religiosity; one that is not bound by tradition or appearances but nature and the “rebirth” of living things (Viramontes 36).
