My book was about a girl named Billie Jo Kelby. She grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. The time period of this book was the early 1930’s. When Billie Jo’s was born her parents were expecting a boy, but it turned out to be a girl. Back in the 1900s the doctors didn't have all the technology we have today so it was hard to tell whether it was a girl or a boy. Her father owned the farm but living in the middle of oklahoma with all the tornadoes and dust storms didn't help him grow crops. In the rural areas farming was the only job for miles. The dust storms had gotten so bad that the president which was Franklin D. Roosevelt created the New Deal. The New Deal was a series of programs that included both laws passed by congress and presidential orders.
