...cinematography and mise en scène and recognize the importance of each • Understand the importance of color and lighting and how they affect the tone and feel of a film • Be familiar with different methods of photographing a film, and with terms such as panning, tilting, tracking shots, deep focus, and aspect ratios • Understand how different focal length lenses affect the look of a shot • Recognize what special effects can do for a movie—and what they can’t do 4.1 The “Look” of a Scene W hen we are first introduced to Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather, played by Marlon Brando, the Mafia boss is sitting in the study of his home. Along with his consigliore, or adviser, Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall), Corleone is listening to a line of people requesting favors on the day of his daughter’s wedding. Corleone is immensely powerful, as we learn by the scope of the favors he is asked to grant, which in one case includes the desire of a singer to be cast in a film to revive his musical career, and Corleone’s ability to grant them. However, it is not just what Corleone says in the scene, which introduces us to all that will follow, that makes us aware of his power. It is also how the scene looks, how it is shot, and how color and light are combined that give The Godfather such an immediately distinctive feel. The rich hues, the closed blinds, the placing of Corleone behind the desk, a traditional seat of power, tell us that this is a man in...

...Movie Review: Lawrence of Arabia Script I believe the script was very much profound. There had been quite a lot of twists in the story which made me eager to find out what could happen next. It also showed what a man can do for people regardless of his race and religion. It showed how great the influence of a person who was not even one of their own yet was able to unite them as a nation. Acting In some parts of the movie, I found the acting a little bit clumsy. When one of the slaves of Lawrence fell into the quicksand, the acting was a bit stiff. When an Arab shot the people at the train, some of them fell in front instead of going backwards since they were shot from the front. Also, when Lawrence was shot by the soldier from the left, his wound was on the right which was quite impossible. Moreover, Lawrence kept moving naturally as if he weren’t shot. He could even move his right hand and shoulder. Directing David Lean’s directing gave a lot of insights about what the actors could do. He was able to challenge the actors to act and express themselves which the situation asks of them. It’s just that he became a little careless on some parts which made the actors look clumsy. Cinematography In the movie, it was able to show the things that really needed to be shown like the expression of the actors, details in the movie and many more. The only thing that needed more work was about the lighting during the night. I could barely see what was happening when it was nighttime...

...Lennie Small and George Milton, are migrant workers living and working on a farm in Soledad, California for a low pay. George is taking care of Lennie because Lennie is mentally handicapped. They both have a dream in which they buy a few acres of land and “live off the fat of the land.” Throughout the story Lennie is shown as a static character through external conflict, motivation, and complication. In the beginning, Lennie and George are being chased by a bunch of workers who want to kill them. Later in the story the author gives more details as to why they were being chased. Lennie had grabbed on to a girls dress because of an attraction he has to touching soft things. The girl started screaming and accused Lennie of raping her. George repeats multiple times that Lennie, “’…don’t mean no harm’” (36) , and the reader can tell he does not seeing he acts like such a kid. This attraction to soft things causes multiple complications throughout the story and you would think Lennie would learn, yet he always forgets and does the same thing. Also, there were external conflicts between Lennie and his boss’s son Curley. Candy had informed George that Curley “’Hates big guys’” (27). He is just jealous of them because he is small. The reader can be certain something will happen between them and eventually does happen. They get into a fight and Lennie breaks Curley’s hand, which causes another conflict. ...HENERAL LUNA REFLECTION PAPER Summary of the movie The story took place during the Philippine-American War, focusing on the leadership of Heneral Luna to the Philippine Revolutionary Army. It revolved not only about the war against the Americans, but mainly on the conflict among Filipinos. The issue was about the presence of Americans and other Filipinos supporting the Americans’ ways such as Buencamino and Paterno. The idea of fellow Filipinos supporting Americans enraged Heneral Luna for he was very patriotic and strongly fought for the freedom of the Philippines. Though Luna was considered to be a great leader of the army, some were against his leadership for others envy or were threatened by his presence. He had conflicts with other fellow generals such Mascardo which lead to more hatred against Luna. Luna was assassinated at Aguinaldo’s headquarters. He was framed that the President called him, though upon his arrival he already left and Buencamino was the one in the office. During their argument, shots were fired outside so Luna went out to inspect. The brutal killing happened as Janolino appeared, captain of Kawit that he also had a fight with, killing him along with the other soldiers against Luna. He was shot and stabbed repeatedly to death. Other loyal soldiers to Luna were killed including the Bernal brothers. Heneral Luna was buried with full military honors as ordered by Aguinaldo by the same men who killed him. ...Killings Analysis Style and Technique “Killings,” one of Dubus’s best-known and most respected stories, was the basis for the film In the Bedroom (2001). Although the story revolves around passion and violence, Dubus tells the tale in a flat, calm way. The first two acts of violence are dropped into the story unexpectedly and without emotion. The story opens with Frank’s funeral, then moves on to the conversation between Willis and Matt about how Matt wishes he could kill the man who murdered his son, but the reader does not know who killed Frank, how, or why. Next, in a long descriptive paragraph, Richard is introduced. He is first connected to Frank by the flat opening line of the next paragraph: “One night he beat Frank.” Only then does the reader learn about Mary Ann, and Matt’s and Ruth’s differing feelings about her. In a lovely, lyrical scene, Mary Ann joins the Fowlers for a barbeque after a day at the beach. Matt’s love for his son is mixed with a wistful attraction to Mary Ann. She is beautiful, but Matt sees in her eyes a sadness and pain that he and his family have been spared, and he wishes he could help and comfort her. The next paragraph starts with, “Richard Strout shot Frank in front of the children.” Such jarring shifts of mood are used to emphasize how quickly life can turn from sunny to violent and how swiftly the good things in life can be taken away. The story’s point of view is that of the limited omniscient narrator. The reader sees the events through...

...officer shot a young, black and even unarmed man, named Michael Brown. This triggered a great anger among the Afro-American people, and especially Brittney Cooper, “That story is only plausible to people who believe that black people are animals, that black men go looking for cops to pick fights with.” Her anger did the fact, that she wrote the contribution to debate: “In defense of black rage: Michael Brown, police and the American dream” on the website “www.salon.com“, August 12th 2014. But how does she manage to get her message out, and is she succeeded? Brittney Cooper is written about a problem, which has been affecting the United States for many years. And she is not the first one, who tries to make a difference. She complains the still on-going suppression of the Afro-Americans. “We are weak. We are tired. Of being punching bags and targets for the police.” The writer makes it clear, that this suppression has been going on for far too long, and the Afro-Americans are tried of being the target zone, without having the ability to resist. Therefore is the Afro-American woman Brittney Cooper mad. And she is writing mostly to white people. The white people, who cannot understand the Afro-Americans’ anger. The white people, who cannot understand the looting in Ferguson, which she did not support, but she is tired of playing indifferent: “I don’t support the looting in Ferguson, Missouri. But I’m also tired of “turning the other cheek” and forgiving”. And she is just one of...

...1999, the year it came out, the movie “The Matrix” directed by the Wachovski brothers was considered by many as one of the best action movies in the film industry in decades. It was understandable after the success it had at the box office, and its success among viewers, which was not only local but global also. The structure of the journey of the hero, Neo, is nothing new. In fact, it starts and it ends like all the other journeys that preceded it, with the advantage of being rich in thought-provoking themes in comparison to the other movies of the genre. In order to help in the development of those themes, the Wachovski brothers use a lot of allusions, references from religions, myths, philosophy, literature, without changing the pattern of their hero’s journey which is clearly the same as the one represented in Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. Using the latter, it would possible to understand the use of certain figures of imagery, camera movements, and other tools by the Washovski brothers in the making of this film. 1- Departure Just like any other hero’s journey, the story of the matrix starts with the departure, which is comprised of five steps: a) The call to adventure b) Refusal of the Call Fotso 2 c) Supernatural Aid d) The Crossing of the first threshold e) The Belly of the Whale During this first stage of the journey, the hero has to separate from the world he knows, and in the movie “The Matrix” there are lots of symbols, motifs with connections to sleep, dreams...

...Instead of seeing the world through the blinking of our eyes and navigating with our limbs through this jungle, films allow us to engage in a reality where space navigates through us. Film editing has developed over time as a form of a new language shows how it has transformed and outgrown itself from just a mere technique/attempt to mimic a moment in reality. “Vampires” analyzes editing in correlation to the movement we perceive in reality -such as the idea of a jumpcut as something we cannot experience through our body. The language of film have become the foundation to creating a new form of sensually stimulating storytelling. We expect different structures to watching a music video than to a movie trailer, in terms of its length, emphasis on elements to a video such as music, voice or cinematography, clarity of the narrative. Language of film has established itself as a distinct territory from simply recording of reality - this can be learned from how 3D visualisation in film has not yet added newly ground-breaking structures to...

...These three paragraphs, which are found in the beginning of “The Tell-Tale Heart,” are significant towards the rest of the story. The beginning paragraphs are necessary for the introduction and rising action of the story.. By writing a summary of what the narrator did to the old man, Poe shows the madness in the narrator. Throughout the story, his writing is used in a way to show how the narrator wants to prove his sanity. By using an unreliable second person point of view, symbolism, and syntax & sentence structure, this passage is used to prove the narrator’s point. In the reading, Poe utilizes an unreliable second person point of view. This means that the narrator either cannot or will not tell the reader what really happens in the story. In the passage, the narrator immediately states that his disease has made his hearing intensely powerful, rather than weakening his senses. He claims, “I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I...

...programme that I have taken notes on appeared on our screens and was broadcast on 10/10/10 at 6:00pm. It was presented by Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale and the headlines of each individual story were read out in the studio. This was then followed by images and graphics appearing on screen as the voice-overs of the news presenters could clearly be heard explaining the story. The first story that was covered was about how the Vitamin B could potentially benefit people that suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The first part of this story used graphics on the screen as well as the use of voice-overs to narrate what the diagrams and statistics on screen meant. The story then progressed into interviews with experts on the matter, all of a medical background and with extensive knowledge in Alzheimer’s disease and also the Vitamin B. These interviews were taken in medical rooms with clear equipment and charts visible on camera the whole time to reiterate the issue. Finally the story was concluded with footage of old age pensioners who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and a summary voice over being made on the subject. The second story was about the Prime Minister’s communication chief adviser and the scandal that has emerged over phone-hacking in the recent press. The story was introduced briefly by Alastair Stewart in the studio before moving on to moving image of the communication chief walking into 10 Downing Street with the use of voice-overs from the reporter. ...

...In this essay, I would like to compare and contrast gender roles/marriage and primarily show through two literary works found in my textbook the differences and likenesses of each story, as they are being told to the audience. The short stories that I have chosen to discuss for this essay are “The Necklace”, by Guy de Maupassant and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, by James Thurber. I will try to compare and contrast both stories and give the audience a brief summary, explaining the likenesses and differences and engaging the reader, while doing so. In the short summary of the short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". This short-story tells the tale of Walter Mitty while on a trip into town with his wife, the bossy and serious Mrs. Mitty. Walter is sadly incompetent of doing many things; he forgets a lot of things, is very absent-minded while driving, and cannot handle the simplest tasks. But, what makes Walter unique throughout this short-story is his imagination. While Walter goes through his tasks, he escapes into a world of many fantasies, each brought on by reality. While driving his car he starts to day dream that he is a commander on a “Navy hydroplane" going through a storm. (Clugston, 2010). While passing a hospital, he believes he is a famous surgeon, known throughout the world for saving lives. He imagines he is being interrogated in court on a case, when he hears a newsboy shouting about a trial. Also, when he is waiting for his wife, he imagines himself...
