Goals: Using a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two versions of a story.
Objectives: The students will have prior knowledge of the story “The Three Little Pigs” and some of the students may know the sequel “The True Story of The 3 Little Pigs by A. Wolf”.
Attitude(s): The students may be curious as to what the sequel to “The Three Little …show more content…
Themes and characters from history can also be used. Also caricatures of the characters can be explored. After the drawing sessions, students can pretend to be the different characters. The teacher/facilitator can suggest events or scenes for characters to perform. Students can role play a character and classmates will have to guess which character is being portrayed (there are many possibilities here). ELL students can use information they wrote about character description in their journals to help them complete activity, they will use the journal as reference. ELL students who need more guidance will work on the activity at a table near teacher’s desk, they will partner up with another student who understands the activity so the students can help one another. Teacher will be walking around and checking for comprehension and assisting when students need

...Abstract The pigs are always fat, lazy, and happy, whereas the wolves are always intimidating, shrewd, and even reckless. The tyrant in the story of the Three Little Pigs is the wolf, who is unable to be satisfied by his cravings and who must continue in his endless search for meaning. The story seems to portray the wolf as an imposing figure that is unconquerable by the pigs; however, in the end the wit of the third pig does indeed conquer the wolf. The wolf, in a typical role of preying on the weak, is able to blow down the houses of the first two pigs, but the third pig’s business nature and sturdy home hinders the wolf. The cycle is supposed to be a reverse full circle, with the pigs now being at the top of the food chain and in a sense, will retain the revolutionary spirit that had once been contained within the wolf, but was then passed on to the pig. All four of these stories provide their own perceptive insights into the classic tale, and shows how one story can provide four different viewpoints that are each unique and each worthy of expansion into their own universes. ...Reflection Paper 1 Reflection Paper Reflection Paper 2 Overall Impression of Book: I feel that Anne Fadiman narrated the story of Lia Lee’s and her family’s life in intimate and tragic detail. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a poignant depiction of the struggle between loving parents, hard-working medical professionals, and a very precious child caught in the middle of a tug-of-war. Ms. Fadiman very distinctly illustrates how the collision of two cultures indirectly led to the demise of a little seven- year old girl. I did not expect the story to end with Lia Lee in a persistent vegetative state. I was very excited when I first started the book, but I soon became rather depressed with the lack of compassion of people towards the Hmong in general throughout the book. I am not certain whether I am now more culturally aware now, but I was very frustrated by the lack of respect given to the Hmong by the people in the city of Merced and the doctors and nurses comments about the Lees. Three Major Themes Evident in the Book: A: Cultural Understanding An important thread running throughout this book is cultural understanding. ...Joyce's Araby share many of the same literary traits. The primary focus of the two stories revolves around a young man who is compelled to decipher the different between cruel reality and the fantasies of romance that play in his head. That the man does, indeed, discover the difference is what sets him off into emotional collapse. One of the main similarities between the two stories is the fact that the main character, who is also the protagonist, has built up incredible,yet unrealistic, expectations of women, having focused upon one in particular towards which he places all his unrequited affection. The expectation these men hold when finally "face to face with their object of worship" (Wells, 1993, p. 127) is what sends the final and crushing blow of reality: The rejection they suffer is far too great for them to bear. Updike is famous for taking other author's works and twisting them so that they reflect a more contemporary flavor. While the story remains the same, the climate is singular only to Updike. This is the reason why there are similarities as well as deviations from Joyce's original piece. Plot, theme and detail are three of the most resembling aspects of the two stories over all other literary components; characteristic of both writers' works, each rendition offers its own unique perspective upon the young man's romantic infatuation.
