Theodore de Bry’s engraving, The Chickahominy Become “New Englishmen,” made in 1619 pictures the treaty negotiations between the English and Virginia Indians. The image is probably an accurate representation in terms of how the treaty negotiations were held. I would say the artist is biased in the way he portrayed the Indians. His title shows the English were trying to change the Indians ways and he makes them look almost devilish and unruly. This image was created to portray Indians submitting to the English’s way of life. This helps someone understand that the English wanted the Indians to submit to English rule and the king as their lord but by knowing the history of that time you would know that the Indians believed that negotiating a treaty didn’t mean they had given up their own political affairs. …show more content…

Quakers began to populate the colonies around 1700, after the English crown had seized the colony of New Netherland, and encouraged the creation of a Quaker colony led by William Penn. After William Penn founded Pennsylvania, he declared that every settler would enjoy the free possession of their faith and exercise of worship towards God. Quakers thought that neither preachers nor Bibles are necessary to worship God, which is the opposite of the Puritan religion.

The more southern colonies were Anglicans, their main faith laid in their tobacco plantations; this also became true for the Catholic founders of Maryland. Maryland was founded as a safe haven for Catholics, but they had to welcome puritans so they would a have a sufficient work force.
