Toulmin’s System: The Coddling of the American Mind
Claim: In this article, Lukianoff and Haidt discuss about how microaggressions and trigger warnings are being institutionalized on college campuses. Aside from this, they argue that policing speech ultimately ruins the purpose of college, as it prevents students from being exposed from diverse thoughts, ideas, and opinions.
Backing or Evidence: In the beginning, they mention how students, specifically foreign students, are being offended by simple questions, such as, “where are you from?”. In my opinion, this is quite ridiculous to overreact over a simple question because it is merely a question. However, the reaction itself is quite subjective and is dependent on the context of the situation. Aside from this, the article mentions how being exposed to opposing thoughts, ideas, and opinions prepares an individual for the “Real World”. I agree with this statement because people should never expect a world free from hate.…show more content… They argue that the issue has been normalized through the accumulation of a safety culture. Essentially, parents have become more careful in the way their children are raised, meaning children are less prone to being exposed to events and ideas that can affect their mentality. Aside from this, schools have been practicing safety codes. For example, after the Columbine Shooting, schools have adopted a zero-tolerant policy as way to prevent bullying and other negative repercussions. Lastly, political parties have become more polarized, meaning there is greater hate between opposing parties. In my opinion, we can compare political parties to Gang Rivalries in which “Gangs” hate each other at an extreme level. Ultimately, these factors have contributed to how millennials have become more “sensitive” than the previous
