...Embracing the Black Power and Black Arts movements, Brooks began to explore black pride and African cultural nationalism, emphasizing the marginality of black life through brilliant imagery and forceful language, and to recognize the rage and despair among black people as her own. For example, Maud Martha, chronicles the childhood and emotional maturation of an unhappy, self-conscious black woman who suffers prejudice not only from whites, but also from blacks who have lighter skin than hers, something that mirrored Brooks's experience. "We Real Cool," which mimics the self-defeating defiance of pool hall dropouts. In the Mecca is considered Brooks's transitional volume, the verses also turn away from the humor and irony of earlier volumes...

...Writing about Literature –Com 1102 September 28, 2011 “We Real Cool” “We Real Cool” is a very short poem that can have a different meaning and theme depending on the reader. I did some background information on Gwendolyn Brooks, the author of this poem, and I realized that knowing some of her background information really helps the reader. By knowing this information the reader can understand and appreciate her poem and its message. During a public reading Mrs. Brooks is known for saying, “I wrote [We Real Cool] because I was passing by a pool hall in my community one afternoon during school time, and I saw, therein, a little bunch of boys – I say there in this poem, seven – and they were shooting pool. Instead of asking myself, “Why aren’t they in school?” I asked myself, ‘I wonder how they feel about themselves?’ and just perhaps they might have considered themselves contemptuous of the establishment…” (Shmoop Editorial Team) This quote helps the reader understand the thought process of Brooks and helps define the general message of how the boys were wasting their time. “We Real Cool” has astoundingly only a subtitle and eight lines. The first sentence we read which is the subtitle says, “The Pool Players. /Seven at the Golden Shovel.” (860) Brooks starts the poem by introducing seven pool players at a local pool hall called the “Golden Shovel”. (860) I found the name of the pool hall intriguing because it means much more than a shovel that is gold. Gold can imply...

...Country Every unique human-living person has its own dreams and perspectives of life. Someone prefers to live in the urban areas with tall buildings, lots of people and a flow of bustle in the streets. Others have a distinct preference for the suburban life; being in the wild nature with a small society. These differences between the species of lifestyles can be sizeable but you cannot say which one is the best. Every lifestyle has its own pros and cons. In “My Little Bit of Country”, 2012 by Susan Cheever, Cheever prefers to live in New York – Central Park is her favorite place to be. In Central Park she feels safe. Cheever is the narrator but also the main character in the essay. We have a first person narrator, but it is a subjective essay, since it is a summary of Cheever’s life and we only hear about what she longs for. The essay is chronological, because Cheever starts telling about her first memories of life – she is in Central Park with her father in the summer mornings and sometimes they visit the Central Park Zoo. Then she keeps on going telling about why she loves the city but that she is the only one, because her family rather to have a place in the countryside. She grows up in Westchester but as often as possible, she visits the Central Park. At the time when she gets her own children she “vowed to let them grew up in the city and never, ever transplant them to the country.” Her desire is to live in New York near the Central Park and she wants to let her children...

Recently this year on CBS News accorking to Ben Tracy (2013), the obesity rate I American Samoa is 75%. This is a big issue whereby our people’s lives are at risk and it is the reason as to why we chose to create a new product to help beat obesity. Like a smoothie or slushy, we have decided to create a new type of smoothie called ‘Island Fruity.’ By hearing these two words ‘island’ and ‘fruity’, it simply tells what the ingredients used for production are local grown fruits. Instead of buying groceries or add other imports, we chose to make use of all the available local fruits we have on island like the pawpaw, bananas, and pineapples to come up with a new product. this way, there will be an increase in savings, less in spending and able to achieve our goals. ‘Island...

...is a tool used to keep in touch with others, is often cited as an example. In my case, it is Skype that I often talk to my friends in different countries. Cell phones are, also, the most common and convenient implements to contact with each other. Take Judy, my sister, for example. After graduating from the senior high school, she goes to another city for attending college, she still chats with her best friend by texting messages and phone calling. Second, I believe that real friendship is a long-term, deeply bound with each other. That is, companionship can last for a long time; it will not end up easily for the distance. Besides, as an old saying goes, “aAbsence makes the heart grow fonder.”Excellent!! Sometimes, folks apart from their friends make them realize how significant their friends are, so they will much treasure their fellowship. Take my personal example. After coming back from Montana, a place where I stay for one year, I still get quite along with my friends, even better than before since we miss each other and having a lot of stories to share during a year to share with.(If you have long sentence, try to delete “and “...

...October 2012 SOUNDVIEW Executive Book Summaries www.summary.com Management ® The Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business THE SUMMARY IN BRIEF In The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg, award-winning business reporter for The New York Times, takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. By distilling vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives, Duhigg brings to light a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential for transformation. Along the way, we learn why some people and companies struggle to change, despite years of trying, while others seem to remake themselves overnight. We visit laboratories where neuroscientists explore how habits work and where they reside in our brains. We discover how the right habits were crucial to the successful promotion of Pepsodent; to Tony Dungy who led his team to a Super Bowl win by changing one step in his players’ habit loop; and to Alcoa when it turned itself around by changing just one routine within the organization. At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, raising exceptional children, becoming more productive, building revolutionary companies and social movements, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. By harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities and our lives. by Charles Duhigg ...

Legal Responsibilities f. Government Statistics g. Capital VII. Conclusion \Abstract/Executive Summary The drinking age should be lowered and Americans should take charge and know their limit. When it comes to the subject of lowering the drinking age, many speculations have been made, both positive and negative. Ohio legislature should take into account both view points. A positive being a drastic reduction in binge drinking among the American population. A negative is the fear of higher death rates due to alcohol poisoning. Lowering the American Drinking Age The drinking age in America has been under speculation for many years now and even though the law is set for 21, there are still minors abusing their availability to the stimulant. One can argue that the law shouldn’t be 21 and should be reduced for many reasons. On the contrary others believe that it just might be the right age if not too low already. Many people disagree with lowering it because of the lack of maturity in young adults, the number of increasing injuries, deaths...

...In order to sort out their feelings or express what they want to say, women will converse deeply about one topic as a way to share intimacy. Men, however, tend to speak in order to make a point while looking for a solution. Instead of patiently listening, men rush in “… impatient to get to the fire …” (Gray 53). Therapist Terrence Real offers this response, “Learning to listen rationally, listen with cool heads and clear boundaries, listen with the quietness of the heart and the gentleness of the body, means having a self so developed it can afford to yield”...

...Larry spotted him sitting alone on a bench across the street from the high school on Vincennes Street. He had not seen Ritchie Braddock for quite a while, at least a few months by now. Everybody recognizes Ritchie Braddock; he’s a legend, kind of a miracle boy. Besides that, he’s an old buddy and Larry wanted to catch up. Ritchie, a sort of shy and bashful kid, was suddenly launched into stardom a couple years ago by sinking a last-minute jump shot in the state basketball finals to put his team in the championship game. Ritchie is a good guy to hang out with for reasons other than his minor stardom. He’s a local basketball legend; not a great player, but a good one. And most of all, a real lucky one. Ritchie Braddock is what you call a nice, quiet guy, who never makes trouble, is a fair athlete, and does well with his studies. He mainly keeps to himself, except for one or two good friends. He lives in a spare back room at Mrs....

Orlando FL, 32828 January 10, 2014 Luis Rodriguez Marketing head of development and research Mile-Stone Real Estate 3211 Legacy Dr. Orlando FL, 32826 Dear: Luis Rodriguez I am writing you today to present you with a part of my business proposal for Scottie’s Bake shop. We have been a home based business now for over 3 years and are finally ready to take our business to the road. We have over 100 hundred steady clients and growing quickly. We have researched multiple companies in our area and have decided to go with your company due to the amount of positive reviews you received in the last 2 years. Due to the increase in volume in our business we will need a 600- 800sq foot loft that has the capability to house the equipment needed to run our bakery successfully. We have been saving the last two years for this move and managed to obtain a total of 110,000 dollars to put toward our business. We have also secured a loan through our bank that should cover most of the initial cost to get our business running for our first year as Scottie’s Bake Shop. I’ve done some research on the building requirements for our bakery and it seems that we will need a factory ventilation system in our work area. We will need a building that will allow us to put one in place. However, I’m...
