1863: The Crucial Year

Part 1

In 1863 several raids happened in eastern and western theaters that took place in the time period of April 29 and May 8. The general behind the raid was a guy named George Stoneman that was the cavalry leader of the Yankee's. He attempted to divert less communication, but this was not helpful because it didn’t hold much value.

THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION was a proclamation that President Abraham Lincoln at the time wrote to free all the slaves in the confederate states. The Emancipation Proclamation was placed into law on January 1, 1863. In fact it didn’t free any slaves because the federal officers could not enforce it. There were mixed emotions about the situation that was going on, some people pointed out that it didn’t free any slaves in the confederate states and the rest thought that it was a good step toward freeing all slaves.

The Battle of Murfreesboro took place in the later part of 1862, general William S. Rosecrans replaced Don Carlos Buellas. William took 45,000 men to Stones River, the town beside of Murfreesboro. Pickett's Charge occurred at three p.m. 15,000 confederate men walked between two ridges with the Yankee's initiating firing, the rebels retreated after thirty mins. The aftermath of Gettysburg was devastating with the union and confederate losses totaling more than 50,000. The war continued for almost three more years. In August 1863 the nineteen union states raised enough money to buy a seventeen-acre plot at Gettysburg's, the purpose would be to use it for graves for all the men that died on Gettysburg. Pennsylvania's Governor Andrew Curtin planned to give a speech, Edward Everett and Abraham Lincoln also had a few words to say. After Edward finished a two-hour speech, it was Lincoln's turn.
