...Alliance System and New Imperialism: France Damon Johnson HIS/114 August 2, 2011 David Hopkins Alliance System and New Imperialism: France The France empire engaged in an alliance with other powerful empires and participated in a new wave of imperialism to acquire power and influence. France engaged in these strategies to promote power against Germany and to maintain power and influence among the other empires in Europe. This would prevent France from becoming a nation capable of takeover from another nation seeking to add more territory. Alliance System France dealt with the reality that the entire German empire faced the entire France empire. As a result, France became isolated geographically as one side faced the German empire and the other side faced the Atlantic Ocean. During this time, Germany previously had signed into an alliance with Italy and Austria-Hungary, known as the Triple Alliance. With the increasing power of Germany facing France, France began to face isolation and possible conquest by the German powers. To prevent this, France allied with Great Britain and Russia, known as the Triple Entente. Under the Triple Entente alliance, France had an ally in Russia that would give German powers fear of developing possible hostilities with France and Russia on the German empire’s western and eastern frontiers (Kishlansky & O’Brien, 2008). New Imperialism Europe began a new wave of imperialism, the acquisition of territories on an intense and unprecedented...

...When examining world history in the attempt to understand it better, you must always take into account a particular society’s ability to spread its people, culture, ideas and influence throughout the region it inhabits, and expand those boarders when defined. When defining historical impact by these criteria we see that China throughout the historical record excels, therefore having an immense impact on history. I believe no story better exemplifies the pursuit of Chinese exceptionalism and total impact of the cultures more than the Seven Great Treasure Voyages of Admiral Zheng He, of the Ming Dynasty (r. 1368-1644) Zheng He (born Ma He, circa 1371 in Kunyang, China) was a naval admiral and court eunuch of the Ming Dynasty, born to a Muslim...

...Winter Storm – December 2013 (5th to 6th December) Summary On 5th December 2013 a depression passed over the UK due to the Polar Jet stream being unusually for south. This caused the wettest December since 1776, with a series of low pressure weather systems bringing some characteristic storm events. However it was the storm event on the 5th of December that had the heaviest impact according to the Met Office. Causes The synoptic chart (left) shows the meteorological basis of the storm. At 1200 UTC a deep area of low pressure can be seen moving south-west across the UK; it can be seen just off the north-east coast of the UK at a pressure of 967 millibars. This alongside other oncoming depressions would (as well as bringing heavy stormy weather) cause a storm surge affecting the North Wales and North Sea coastline. Unlike the formation of depressions off the west coast of the UK, this depression was formed from Polar Maritime air, from Greenland, and Tropical Maritime air, from the Azores, however as it had been moved North by the Polar Jet Stream it had picked up much more moisture than any typical depression, however it had also been modified by Artic Maritime air, and it was this that gave the large scale impact of the storm event. Comparatively, the 5th December storm event was likened to the events of January 2012 and December 2011, however the length of the storm event, meant that the storm event in December 2013 had the most notable effect. The depression was also...

The 10 fundamental strategic rules will be discussed and I have chosen three of these rules as the most critical to Sea Ray’s success. Sea Ray must operate in fundamentally different ways when forming an innovation experiment to avoid organizational memory. The success of the experiments will hinge more on experimentation than the initial strategy used. Sea Ray then must not base success on financial performance, but on the ability to learn and adapt. Formal pathways which are currently being used for innovation will be assessed and characterized. Using this pathway data, new modern opportunities will be discussed in order to make Sea Ray more innovation friendly. Sea Ray will also use human resource data instead of research and...

...Date: A Critical Analysis of the Tempest by Shakespeare A critical analysis of the Tempest reveals numerous unscrupulous schemes that are often employed by human beings in a bid to gain power and influence. These schemes reflect the nature of people as they attempt to acquire dominance over others in various aspects of life. In the Tempest, these schemes are discernible from the many scenes where characters engage in underhand deals even against fellow characters in a bid to win influence. However, it is notable that the impact of these schemes is resolved quite amicably, although there remains a lingering discomfort that illustrates that this acquired utopia is rather temporal. It can be noted that some of the characters actually pay for their engagement in these illicit deals, although a more critical analysis reveals that this punishment may be deterrent enough as some of the characters do not seem to learn their lessons. Indeed, the Tempest creates the allusion of an island where goodness always overshadows the evil and in the end there seems to be a re-birth that signifies a resumption of normal life. (Pierce 374). It must be noted that this sense of utopia initially begins through a state of chaos when a party organized by Alonso suffers greatly from a vicious storm while at sea. This is notable when the play begins with the sound of lightning and thunder that causes “a tempestuous noise” (Shakespeare I, I, 1). Perhaps this malevolent beginning has been tactfully used...

...Development and Impact HUANG, AN-HAO Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2009 School of Social and Political Sciences Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT This thesis aims to examine how and why a continental-oriented China has shifted its maritime strategic orientation and naval force structure from its coast toward the far seas in an era of interdependent international system. Generally, China is an ancient continental land power with an incomplete oceanic awareness. With the transformation after the Cold War of China’s grand strategy from landward security to seaward security, maritime security interests have gradually become the most essential part of China’s strategic rationale. Undoubtedly, the quest for sea power and sea rights has become Beijing’s main maritime strategic issue. Given China’s escalating maritime politico-economic-military leverage in the Asia-Pacific region, its desire to become a leading sea power embodying global strategic thinking means that it must expand its maritime strategy by developing its navy and preparing for armed confrontation in terms of international relations realism. Conversely, Beijing’s maritime policy leads at the same time towards globalization, which involves multilateralism and strategic coexistence of a more pragmatic kind. This research analyses Chinese maritime strategy in the Asia-Pacific by asking: ‘Whither...

...the close of the Victorian Era, has three specific aims. The first is to create or to encourage in every student the desire to read the best books, and to know literature itself rather than what has been written about literature. The second is to interpret literature both personally and historically, that is, to show how a great book generally reflects not only the author's life and thought but also the spirit of the age and the ideals of the nation's history. The third aim is to show, by a study of each successive period, how our literature has steadily developed from its first simple songs and stories to its present complexity in prose and poetry. To carry out these aims we have introduced the following features: (1) A brief, accurate summary of historical events and social conditions in each period, and a consideration of the ideals which stirred the whole nation, as in the days of Elizabeth, before they found expression in literature. (2) A study of the various literary epochs in turn, showing what each gained from the epoch preceding, and how each aided in the development of a national literature. (3) A readable biography of every important writer, showing how he lived and worked, how he met success or failure, how he influenced his age, and how his age influenced him. (4) A study and analysis of every author's best works, and of many of the books required for college-entrance examinations. (5)...

...The key differences between the natural gas markets in Asia, Europe and North America November 2012 Table of Contents Summary 3 Overview 4 Conclusions 8 References 9 Summary The major difference of the natural gas market, which sets it apart from the truly global oil market, is that the former has historically been developed with respect to the regional supply bases. This was primarily defined by existing technology for natural gas transportation and availability of other energy resource: primary oil and coal. Sharp increase of oil prices and global concern with availability of oil reserves; growing awareness of the fossil powered industry influence on the environment, introduction of LNG and GTL technologies had significant impact on the natural gas market share, demonstrating recently double digit grows in consumption for all regions except Western Europe. This script will address the key differences between the natural gas markets in Asia, Europe and North America. Overview 25% average share of natural gas in the global energy balance is distributed unevenly throughout the regions: 35% of energy consumed by Europe, 27% by North America and only 11% by Asia-Pacific come...
