At the camp I am put into a group with kids my age. We are then told who our counselor is. His name is Adam and he is 17 years old and he tells us that he once attend the camp just like us. Throughout the whole summer I really start to connect with Adam. He shares stories with me about his time in high school and playing soccer and lacrosse. By the end of the summer Adam becomes a role model to me because of how kind he was to everyone and how he really seemed to have his life figured out.

...contributing members of society. Instead of institutionalizing suggestible minds, guaranteeing that every third person that is locked up will be back at least two or three more times as a juvenile (Parker, 2006), Oregon lawmakers should support the development and utilization of wilderness therapy programs which are quickly proving to be able to drastically reduce the recidivism rates among their graduates. It is important to acknowledge up front that in some cases detention facilities do serve an important social function. It is not the purpose of this paper to argue for the dismantling of these facilities altogether. Getting violent criminals - those convicted of rape, murder, assault, gun crimes, or that exhibit other incorrigible behavior - off the streets is an undeniably important undertaking. These individuals, however, are a small percentage of the total juvenile criminal population, and thus not a central focus of this paper. Further, these individuals are shown to receive little benefit from the form of therapy discussed herein (Lipsey,...

Improving Summer School for at-Risk Students T

...Improving Summer School for At-Risk Students to Improve MAP Achievement H Abstract “Race to the Top” have left public education systems searching for ways to make sure students are reaching their highest potential. Because of the importance of accountability issues to school systems, it is important to examine ways to help students reach their potential. One tool school districts use to aid in improving student achievement is summer school. This qualitative study provides an overview of the history of summer school. Additionally, it offers a synopsis of various types of summer programs and at-risk student populations often targeted by summer school. The researcher also offers a review of literature on student learning loss over the summer months. Summer learning programs have the potential to help children and youth improve their academic and other outcomes. This is especially true for children from low-income families who might not have access to educational resources throughout the summer months and for low-achieving students who need additional time to master academic content. Because many students loose learning over the summer and some students need more time on task to master content, participation in summer learning programs should mitigate learning loss and could even produce achievement gains on standardized test such as MAP. Overview One hundred and fifty Title I-eligible students from Chandler Creek Elementary school will enroll each...

Quiktrip Mission Statement

...Summer Success For Unfortunate Children Learn. Play. Engage. We have a perfect view of summer vacation: sandy beaches, family road trips, and tons of fun. It is a time with few responsibilities and many opportunities. Summer time sounds great in theory, however, it can be problematic for many families. For children in low-income families, summers mean empty bellies, hours of boredom, and unsupervised care. America’s most disadvantaged kids end up sitting in front of the TV while their better-off peers gain ground academically. Our mission is to help these disadvantaged children become successful by providing them with the education, structure, and support they need to thrive. These objectives closely align with those of our partner, QuikTrip. QuikTrip’s mission statement is to “wisely invest dollars in community efforts that will help impact individuals in our society who are dependent on the charitable support of others”. Many QuikTrip gas stations have a sign that reads, “Safe Place”. This is part of their Safe Place program, where runaways and at-risk youth can come in, receive a free meal, and speak with a professional until help arrives for...

Organizational Change

...(Nicholson, Collins & Holmer, 2004). This process of understanding the transformations that occur within some organizations is one of critical thinking and discovery. In addition, it provides a deeper perspective of how organizational stakeholders serve as change agents and improve the leadership abilities within the community. The organizational change that was examined over the course of this study was one connected to the request by York County SC community members. They wanted assistance in eradicating the high dropout rate. After reports from the SC Department of Education that the dropout rate in York SC was increasing, United Way of York County began to take a harder look at the educational needs of the local residents. This final paper will examine the dynamics of change to include the content, process and context of that change as well as the community reaction toward that change. Finally, I will share some of the conclusions and recommendations of how this change affects the structural configuration of programs and organizations. Significance of the Problem The United Way of York County, which was established in 2005, was previously viewed as a funding agency that provided support to partner and community agencies. However, in 2010, the South Carolina Department of Education conducted its annual educational review and noted that there was an increase in the dropout rate for York County. This increase became a call to action for the community. There was a request to...

Since then, the association has grown to include other elements of the fire services as well as members of the emergency medical services, and interested professionals from throughout the community. The organization works to insure that anyone impacted by a burn related injury receives the necessary resources on their road to recovery while raising fire and burn prevention awareness. The initial goals established in 1988 still stand today. They are to present burn and fire prevention information to the community, to provide support to burn survivors, to support local burn care research, and to support the regional burn center at Strong Memorial Hospital (Rochester, NY) with equipment to enhance burn care, and to provide burn center staff with funding to attend educational events. Personal Statement: Putting Thoughts To Paper

...Putting Thoughts to Paper For several years in school, I dreaded writing academic papers because I found many of the topics monotonous, provoking little desire in me to work hard. The writing process intimidated me because I was often unaware as to where I should begin a paper and once I did, how I should develop my thoughts in an effective manner. My appreciation of writing, both academically and artistically, did not surface until my sophomore year in high school. When I transferred from public to private school, I realized that my writing skills were not as strongly developed as many of my fellow classmates. This feeling of inadequacy motivated me to seek help from my teachers and peers. By the end of first semester sophomore year, my...

...Synthesis Industrially produced foods make up a significant proportion of the foods consumed in the United States. My paper aims to discover how the accessibility of these foods in terms of cost, convenience, and advertising affect the eating habits of Americans. One camp, which I shall refer to as the Necessity group, including authors Hurst and McWilliams, believes that these industrially produced foods are necessary to feed the populace at a reasonable price, and without it, many people would go hungry. Another camp, which I shall refer to as the Choice group, including authors Pollan and Foer, believe that eating habits are a matter of personal choice, and it is not the accessibility of the foods that largely affects eating habits, but rather the education and motivation of the population. The last camp, which I shall refer to as the Fattening group, including authors Larson & Story and Freeman, believes that the accessibility of industrially produced foods has a negative impact on peoples' health, especially for the low-income. Understanding the health implications of highly accessible industrially produced foods can help guide policy making and personal choices to decrease obesity and food-related disease incidence in the United States. The Necessity camp, including authors Blake Hurst and James McWilliams, agree that highly accessible industrially produced foods are the way of the future and that they make feeding the nation a more attainable goal. Japanese Concentration Camps

...ETHN 14 PROF Mark 26 November 2015 Japanese Internment Camps during World War II: Sports in the Camps. The Bombing of Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941 resulted in President Roosevelt to issue Executive Order 0966 on February 19th 1942, which effected all Japanese ancestry, both citizens and aliens living in America or outside of the Pacific zone. The Executive Order's primary objective were to prevent any espionage and to protect the Japanese people from any harm against Americans who slowly began to become very strong anti-Japanese people who were growing their hate and racial discrimination to the Japanese due to the bombing. With the Executive Order in act, if affected “117,000 people of Japanese descent, two-thirds of whom were native-born citizens of the United States” (as stated through the National Archives.) Evacuation orders were posted in Japanese American communities giving them instructions on what they were to do. This included the Issei who were the first generation Japanese to immigrate to American and also the Nisei who were the second generation Japanese in America. The Japanese were allotted a few days to pack whatever they could and bring it with them. Many families had to sell off their homes, businesses and their belongings at a much lower price they had purchased it for. The 117,000 people of Japanese decent living in the U.S were later removed from their homes and moved to internment camps to prove their loyalty to the United States. During moving...

Short Story Analysis a Television Drama

...Global Issues | Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Gender equality is a human right,1 but our world faces a persistent gap in access to opportunities and decision-making power for women and men.2 Globally, women have fewer opportunities for economic participation than men, less access to basic and higher education, greater health and safety risks, and less political representation.2 Guaranteeing the rights of women and giving them opportunities to reach their full potential is critical not only for attaining gender equality, but also for meeting a wide range of international development goals. Empowered women and girls contribute to the health and productivity of their families, communities, and countries, creating a ripple effect that benefits everyone. The word gender describes the socially-constructed roles and responsibilities that societies consider appropriate for men and women.17 Gender equality means that men and women have equal power and equal opportunities for financial independence, education, and personal development 3 . Women's empowerment is a critical aspect of achieving gender equality. It includes increasing a woman's sense of self-worth, her decision-making power, her access to opportunities and resources, her power and control over her own life inside and outside the home, and her ability to effect change.4 Yet gender issues are not focused on women alone, but on the relationship between men and women in society.5 The actions and attitudes of men and...

Suggestion for a "Read and Feed" Community Program

...A. Topic This is a recommendation to start a new summer program for children with the purpose to encourage reading. The new program will be entitled “Read and Feed Crafts Program” and will be available to children ranging in age 18 months to 16 years. The children will receive a hot lunch, and a free library card. They could spend time reading, playing games, or learning different crafts. It also includes reading incentives for independent reading for reading to others. The program would run for six weeks between the hours of 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Suggestions for funding would include securing a Title I grant (Education, 2011). There are some low income families living in this neighborhood. In addition, the library could seek the assistance of volunteers to participate in the program. B. Purpose The purpose is to encourage the library to consider the idea of setting up this new program in the community during the summer time to encourage the children to enhance their reading skills and development of relationships with their peers. Summer is a great time to encourage children to read books. Reading will help to improve literacy skills and better prepare children for the upcoming school year. One of the best ways to get a child reading is to allow them to pick books they want to read about topics that interest them. Many of the children in the area of the library are from low income families and do not readily have the opportunity to experience something...
