Hypothetical Scenarios: School Year-Round School

...Hypothetical Scenario: Your school is considering going to school year round. If school was to go year round there could be multiple of stuff that could make it displeasing for the students and teachers. First is problem in this scenario is summer break, then there is the problem of kids skipping half days because the electives aren’t as important as core classes and also the problem of students having a great breaks from learning math, english, science, and history during the school year. To me in my life taking summer break will be a bad thing, not only for me but also for my dad because he relies on me for the three months of no school to increase the amount of work/money he gets which affects my family a lot. I know many teens who do the same with their family, three weeks off after every nine weeks of school would be pretty cool I’d admit but it wouldn’t be enough to help family businesses like construction like what I do. After all it doesn’t take three weeks or four weeks to finish a big apartment building that my family works on every summer break, or doing field work. The amount of time off is not great enough for all those who do hard labor, in a city it would be more fitting of this school schedule but in a place in montana where...

Argument

...child, it might get them time to get into even more trouble. Depending on how attentive the staff and administration of your child's school is, they could just cause problems there, and probably get away with more since there are no parents around. There has also been talk that students do not need the long break because they can forget what they learned in class. There have also been claims that students will be forced to study more and focus longer in class. For me, and many others with ADD, although possible, it would be quite difficult to do. Students who already take on lots of extracurricular activities will be too stressed out for school. One year I went to summer camp with a girl my age that used to go to school year-round. She said that the school she attended made studying mandatory, which is not a bad idea. What got me was the fact that they had something they called two-hour study, which I (or most normal kids)...

Pros And Cons Of Bag Ban Bad For Freedom And Environment

...use of plastic bags, writer Adan B. Summers argues that there are not so many benefits doing so, but in fact many disadvantages. In his article “Bag Ban Bad for Freedom and Environment”, writer Summers efficiently builds his arguments by using an irony, authoritative statistics, and contracts. Writer Summers first started his article by satiring a recent bill. By saying “not content to tell us how much our toilets can flush or what type of light bulb to use to brighten our homes”, the writer reminds that us that the politicians and environmentalists have already imposed too many suggestions and rules about our private lives, made our lives less convenient than before...

The Flowers

...flowers, she discovers something which will change her childhood and her view on life. By analyzing and interpreting this short story this essay will put focus on Myop’s development and her view on life after her discovery.  “The Flowers” is a story of childhood innocent. Myop is a 10 years old girl. She only sees the beauty of life. She likes the nature, and flowers. The story is described as a beautiful summer day. The story takes place in the woods behind Myop’s house. Myop’s mood develops from a good to a bad mood. I can see that in the beginning “she felt light and good in the warm sun”. When you feel light and good warm sun, its symbols of something good. First Myop is picking flowers in the wood, she is happy. When she later gets further in to the woods “she finds it not as pleasant as her usual haunts”. But then she steps into a man’s face. She realizes that he is dead. She picks up a pink rose and put her bundle of flowers down. But after she had experienced with the innocent man, she had a bad mood and all the fun was over. The text ends with “the summer was over”, and it’s like Myop is growing up and could not have fun anymore. Her life is changed. She could never be the same again. In the beginning of the story the setting is important to understand how it affects Myop’s development. The tone in the beginning is good. A Separate Peace Identity

...Hiding a true identity is something people mourn over. They feel as if they weren’t meant to be, or that they should be a different person. In the book, A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, the seasons are constantly reflecting how Gene feels with Finny and how his feelings change during the seasons, which is metaphorically similar to the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Gene is a boy who goes to the “Devon” school and is friends with Finny, the most popular kid in school. In Gene and Finny’s first summer together, Gene experiences a kind of blissful ignorance. However, when they go on a trip to the beach, Gene gains knowledge of himself and the world around him that overwhelms him, and accordingly he decides to hide his feelings ‘under the leaves’ in the fall and subsequently under the ‘ice’ in winter....

Love

...1. Were you surprised by the ending of the story? If not, at what point did you know what was going to happen? How does Jackson foreshadow the ending? Conversely, how does Jackson lull us into thinking that this is just an ordinary story with an ordinary town? I wasn’t really surprised by the ending of the story. I really didn’t know what was going to happen but I had a feeling that something bad was about to when Jackson wrote about the stones being gathered in huge piles. Jackson foreshadowed the ending by telling the reaction of the crowd when the paper was drawn. I think that he made us think this was ordinary by saying all the towns had done it and it was a tradition. 2. Where does the story take place? In what way does the setting affect the story? Does it make you more or less likely to anticipate the ending? The setting made it easier to predict the ending because if you think about it, no matter where, in history “we are gathering of the entire town means one of two things”; it is either good news or it is bad news. The color of the box also gave away that something bad was going to happen. 3. In what ways are the characters differentiated from one another? Looking back at the story, can you see why Tessie Hutchinson is singled out as the "winner"? She was the chosen as the “winner” because she was the one that was saying the drawing was unfair. I feel that like the story chose her because no body likes a sore loser when the drawing was that of a chance for...

Year Round School Research Paper

...is a Bad Idea If schools start running year-round, then there will be a lot of very angry parents and students. When a school goes year-round, the summer gets shorter, which makes summer jobs shorter, which causes the students and parents to get angry at the school district. Schools going year-round would cause their students to not be able to get summer jobs to gain money for the future, and it would restrict their families from going on summer vacations. Schools should not be year-round because it makes it harder for students to get summer jobs to earn money for the future. In a paragraph called, “Year-Round School: Is it the Right Choice?” written by SBD Blog, it says, “High school students...

Case Study Analysis

...Case Study Analysis Felix Cruz University of Phoenix COMM 215 October 25, 2012. Dr. Santiago Case Study Analysis My suggestions for Arthur to make this summer of replacements hires more successful than those in the past are pretty simple. But in order to obtain these suggestions we must review this case with details to see where the missing factors are. I pretend to review the case of Arthur Reed a warehouse supervisor of the Blue Grocery Stores. He had been in the business for over 20 years and he is in charge of the shipping dock, both first and second shift. The issue here starts when the company gets close to summer because apparently, most of his senior staff suddenly wants to take theirs vacations. The ones that do not get vacations trends to make call-ins related to sickness without any advice in advance which make this a stressful situation for Mr. Reed. This supervisor has to deal with these absences and personnel shortage situations in a daily and weekly basis. He had tried to implement different options such as replacing workers but unsuccessfully because of the higher cost for both the employee and the employer. In addition, we sum the fact that, it is hard to keep people in this job, especially since replacements were not guaranteed any minimum hours or given any benefits and they will be paid at $6 dollars per hour which is a very low rate compared to the higher cost of uniforms, steel-toed boots, and the payments for the union dues. After making...

The Lottery, Essay

...brutal in our ears, it is not far from what is happening right now, in other countries in the world. But we don’t see it as a tradition, as they do in the story. The stoning of the “winner” is an annual tradition for the villagers; “Every year, after the lottery, Mr. Summers began talking again about a new box, but every year the subject was allowed to fade off without anything's being done.” What is noticeable about this tradition was, that many of the villagers don’t seem to really understand why this is even a tradition. “Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones.” The fact that the villagers had forgotten the original ritual indicates that it doesn’t really mean a lot to them. They are doing it more for habit than desire. The stoning of Tessie Hutchinson does not involve any form of prosecution or criminal acts whatsoever, and is completely based on bad luck. The rest of the village is blindly following the tradition, and when a character mentions that, “Some places have already quit lotteries”, an older member of the crowd quickly reproves her. Even though the setting is never really specified, but the reader still get an idea of the environment through bits of description. When you puzzle the pieces together, we are located in a western village. The...

...Extra Credit Essay : Countercultural Bohemians of the Sixties A social phenomenon took place in the summer of 1967 on the junction of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco. Rebellion against the establishment of the government were seen as negative and needed a change. Caught up in the rising frustration circling around America’s increased involvement in Vietnam, racism was still alive in many urban areas, and the pressure to conform; a growing number of the younger generation rejected the American way of life. These were known as hippies. The resulting movement, termed the counterculture, embraced an alternative lifestyle characterized by long hair, brightly colored clothes, communal living, free sex, and rampant drug use. Distrustful of the American government and what they perceived as an increasingly materialistic society, hippies and other members of the counterculture attracted a great amount of media attention during the 1960s. Throughout the decade many counterculture events increased the movement’s notoriety, but one in particular, the Summer of Love. This gathering of young people is often considered to have been a social experiment because of all the alternative lifestyles, which became more common and accepted such as gender equality, communal living and free love. This was the time to gain awareness of all the hatred toward people who were different and weren’t socially accepted. It was to eliminate barriers toward the socialization between everyone. The hippies...
