...Improving Summer School for At-Risk Students to Improve MAP Achievement H Abstract “Race to the Top” have left public education systems searching for ways to make sure students are reaching their highest potential. Because of the importance of accountability issues to school systems, it is important to examine ways to help students reach their potential. One tool school districts use to aid in improving student achievement is summer school. This qualitative study provides an overview of the history of summer school. Additionally, it offers a synopsis of various types of summer programs and at-risk student populations often targeted by summer school. The researcher also offers a review of literature on student learning loss over the summer months. Summer learning programs have the potential to help children and youth improve their academic and other outcomes. This is especially true for children from low-income families who might not have access to educational resources throughout the summer months and for low-achieving students who need additional time to master academic content. Because many students loose learning over the summer and some students need more time on task to master content, participation in summer learning programs should mitigate learning loss and could even produce achievement gains on standardized test such as MAP. Overview One hundred and fifty Title I-eligible students from Chandler Creek Elementary school will enroll each...

...Looking back at my last year’s AP Language Composition class , the frustration I felt while reading the short stories written by Ernest Hemingway was overwhelming. Even after rereading the story we were working on, I was unable to fully understand it. The short story that I remember the most is the “Sea Of Change”. In this story, a man is having a discussion with his girlfriend or wife about her embarrassing him and she leaves him. A shift in the character's behavior suggests that the man went through a change. The “change” he went through was something I failed to figure out. After a class discussion multiple ideas were thrown and as a class we agreed that Hemingway was suggesting the man was gay. Without the help of my class, coming up...

...The nonfiction novel, Zeitoun, written by Dave Eggers, involves a Syrian American, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, who was determined to stay and aid survivors in New Orleans after the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina. Zeitoun faced discrimination and was imprisoned after being accused of being a terrorist. Aside from the novel, the present day Zeitoun had been cleared of charges with the, “solicitation of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder of his ex-wife” (Martin). Even though the nonfiction novel was possibly not accurate, it should remain a summer reading book and be taught at Mills High School, due to the positive effects that the text have on students. ...Cultural competence is defined as the capacity to understand an individual coming from different groups and backgrounds. The major measures utilized in the Davis and Cho (2005) article to evaluate the efficiency of the International Leadership in Educational Technology (ILET) project were stated as “evidence of the development of intercultural competence was analyzed from artifacts, self-report, interviews, and surveys” (p.1). The three strategies that were proven are: Sojourn Abroad, Summer Academy, and Online Reading. After such study, these doctoral students showed flexibility, openness and acceptance. Regarding the Sojourn Abroad strategy, the students improved their skills on educational technology, research, and assisted them in improving their dissertation topics. The Summer Academy students stated that the academy helped them in their academic interests and to investigate unfamiliar academic areas and cultures. The Online Reading group students did not improve their academic performance, but they stated that it assisted them in creating new ideas and knowledge to help them in everyday life experiences. Davis and Cho (2005) clearly explained the meaning and the purpose of cultural competence. Although it is a clear definition, they did not provide a valid measure to prevent prejudiced responses. Also, self-reports, interviews, email interviews, and survey questionnaires have been utilized to gather information. “Analyses produced descriptive statistics related...

...four steps in the system of textbook reading described in Ch. 7 of Your College Experience to reading electronic materials? Part of reviewing is developing your vocabulary. Chapter 7 of Your College Experience lists strategies to help you develop vocabulary skills. Which of these strategies would be most effective for you? How would you apply these vocabulary strategies when reading course materials? I would apply the suggestions of strategy's from the Chapter 7 of Your College Experience in which includes previewing, marking, reading with concentration and reviewing. First comes the previewing process, where I apply by writing a side note on how many pages within the chapter. As overtime it will help me my remember, whats mostly important that’s toward my goal of checking off specific amounts of pages. Second is the marking process, in which marking is the next step after doing the preview step. Where you have noted the chapter, then you're set to start the chapter; in my case marking would help me to read through more quickly and with greater logic based of the reading. As for marking, I would do this step as I'm reading of a section and pick out which are best useful information that are the most important. Next step is to read with concentration, its to find a spot for studying that will mainly reduce distraction. In addition I would avoid any use of gadgets and other distractions that wouldn't let me focus. For my goals during a reading session is to take short breaks and...
