In Amy Tan’s “Rules of the Game” there is an interesting conflict. In this particular story there are two main characters that cause the conflict. These two characters are Waverly and Mrs. Jong, mother and daughter. The conflict between these two characters is that Waverly doesn’t like how her mom shows her off. So out of anger she runs off for a few hours. In result, when she returns home Mrs. Jong is extremely angry with her and decides not to talk to her when she walks in.
First off, Mrs. Jong is the type of mother who wants to be known, and she seems to want her daughter to strive for perfection. She hovers over Waverly so much that is becomes annoying. Mrs. Jong has the ability to change the conflict by controlling her controlling antics. For example in the text it states that Mrs. Jong said “next time win more lose less” right after Waverly’s first tournament. To her it might’ve been her trying to help but in Waverly’s mind it was a sign of un-appreciation. If Mrs. Jong was a little more supportive and gave some inspiring words then Waverly would’ve gotten aggravated.

Secondly, Waverly is a unique character as well as her mother. She lets things boil to the top until she can’t take it anymore. She figures this is a sign of “Invisible Strength.” For example when Mrs. Jong made her comment after Waverly’s first tournament she didn’t like it. But instead of stating her opinion and letting her feelings out she used her “Invisible Strength” which is only just buildup of emotions. Waverly could’ve avoided the conflict if she hadn’t taken her mother’s advice in the beginning of the story so literal. If Waverly would’ve just opened her mouth throughout the entire story then emotions wouldn’t have gotten out of control towards the end of the story. She would’ve had just a little more tolerance for her mother’s inappropriate behavior.
In Conclusion, Mrs. Jong and Waverly could’ve both fixed their attitude and actions. Mrs. Jong could’ve been more considerate by seeming more supportive instead of criticizing. And Waverly could’ve controlled her anger more, by doing this she could’ve refrained from running away and losing her temper. If both of these thoughts were done by both characters the conflict could’ve been avoided. So yes in this case the conflict can be resolved and or prevented.

End of Summer

...Steph wrote a while back that she was sad to see summer going. For me, especially the way this summer has gone, I can’t agree. Yes, I’ll definitely miss the Saints games. I’ll miss the nice days, but for me, this is the time of year when I’m looking ahead. I’m getting closer to finishing up the software I’ve been working on all summer long. I may actually even get to take a real vacation in a month or two. Plus, with the advent of cooler evenings, I’m actually able to open the windows at home and avoid the noise of the air-conditioner and fans once in a while. And I’ve got a hope that with cooler weather, a break in the work (at least temporarily), and no Saints games taking up my my evenings, I’ll find more time to get out and ride my trike. And it’s been this way since I started my business. I’ve always tried to take on less work over the summers, but every year but one I’ve been working on a project that was originally supposed to be done in May, and ended up finishing around September. It’s a chronic problem in the software field, but being an outsider on these projects, I wonder why companies don’t bite off smaller chunks so they can let their employees take some time off during the summer when the ankle-biters are home from school, and families want to take vacations. And just for completeness’ sake, I should note that the one summer I had off, I was working on a project that was running late, and when hit with completely unreasonable demands on my time in May, I left...

Summer Vacation

...My Ideal Summer Vacation A warm and sunny afternoon last day, I was in a deep thought. I was thinking, if I would be given a chance to have a summer vacation without worrying about the expenses, maybe it could be my ideal one. This thought triggered me to ask myself, “What would be my ideal summer vacation looks like?” To start my visualization, I would like to spend it in a place afar from the noisy streets of the city. A place where the only sounds I can hear are the chirping of the birds, the waves crashing on the shore and the laughter of my family. In that place, the trees are dancing gracefully and flowers are waving gently with the wind. In the distance, the shore is filled with sand so white, crystal clear water and with porpoises on the sea side. On the top of the hill resides our home, a small bungalow type but filled with so much contentment and joy. Inside of it are simple things to suffice our needs. Upon entering the entrance door, you will see the clean and tidy living room, with a window on the right that offers a beautiful sight of the blue ocean. Beside our home, there stood a tall and old narra tree that gives us shade during the day. Flowers of different kinds and varieties grows around the yard abundantly. Then, I can see the endless sky above with shiny shimmering stars blinking at night and in the water, it seems the unreachable stars are within my grasp. In a distance, I can see the fire keeps burning from the bonfire we have made, and beside it,...

Summer Season

...The summer season is one of the main seasons of India. It starts from the month of April and lasts up to the end of June. There is intense heat during these months. The sun shines perpendicularly causing numerous difficulties for the people. They want to stay indoors, especially during mid-day. They get tired very soon and feel lethargic. Summer mornings are little bit pleasant and so are the summer evenings. Hence people look busy during these times. They try to finish all their work as quickly as possible because they know that a long hot day is waiting for them. At noon the heat is at its peak. The towns and cities look deserted. There are few people on the road. Sometimes it is too hot to continue the work. Everything is paralysed. People go inside their houses in the darkest room. They drink cold water again and again just to quench their thirst but they never feel satisfied. During summer we eat little food. We do not feel healthy and sometimes develop many complications regarding health. Any irregularity in food-habit leads to sickness. Hot wind called loo' blow throughout the day and many die of heat stroke. The rich people do not have much problem because they have electric fans, coolers and air conditioners. But the poor people have to face hardships. They go on with their work in the open under hot sun. The season is lazy one. People do not feel active and only want to sit under fan in the cold dark room. It is therefore all schools and colleges are...

Summer Slide

...Running Head: Why the “summer Slide” Phenomenon Why the “Summer Slide” Phenomenon Wesley Parker DTCC December 12, 2009 “Each fall, teachers regularly spend up to six weeks going over the same lessons their students had been taught the precious school year because of a phenomenon known as the “summer slide.” How kids spend their time outside of school is critically important to their success. It is a societal issue and something that is important to address, community-to-community and parent-to-parent,” said Ron Fairchlid, (2006). Executive Director of the Center for Learning at John Hopkins University). Summer Slide is a name given to the face that student who does not keep up with their level of academic skills over the summer loses them. This situation is usually found in low-income areas. This loss of memory is usually done to the lack of mental stimulation. Since this is a known problem, there are various ways to limit of even preventing this from happening to the students. Summer slide occurs for more than one reason, but the main one is lack of access to books, magazines, or newspapers in the home. In some cases there are no libraries or clubs in the immediate community. Then, there is the lack of education the parents have, most have no higher education themselves and therefore, are unable to persuade the children they need education, so there is a lack of motivation. There is a way of preventing this and for the middle or higher classes it is...

Summer Research Report

...The first weeks of the summer fellowship in the VDS stream was a bit hectic. They consisted of learning protocols and techniques. Three plates of PNiC-BSa4 colonies were grown by my partner and me that week. These were later used by the majority of lab students who had reached the cloning stage. My first PCR with plasmid pgbr22 failed, but the second was successful. PCR with pmCherry had to be completed 3 times to get a successful result and PNIC-BSa4 PCR had to be completed twice to get a successful result. The three practice PCRs were completed the 5th week of lab. Protein expression using PfDXR was started in week 3 and the sample of protein was purified the following week. I received my target protein Rickettsia prowazskii FabG (RpFabG), responsible for epidemic typhus, during week 5 of research. I worked on designing tail primers for this specific protein with two other researchers in my group that also had the same target. A virtual RE Digest gel was also done with PNiCBSa4 accepting vector and Fab G 3-ketoacyl-ACP reductase insert to help visualize and understand the next steps for our research. Primary PCR was completed with an oligo primer mix for RpFabG, followed by Secondary PCR and PCR2. The sample was nano-dropped after PCR2 to determine that the concentration was high. My first attempt had a concentration average of 9.4ng/uL, so I had to restart and complete primary PCR twice before being able to move onto secondary PCR. The primary and secondary PCR gels showed...

Summer Camps

...It is not easy for parents to make the decision to send their child away into the waiting arms of strangers who promise to take care of them — people who promise to show them the wonders of nature, fun, new skills, and friendships. As a parent of two children, even I struggle with the idea, and I have been around summer camps my entire life. The world needs the next generation to be more tolerant of each other’s views, ideology, and beliefs. Summer camp is an opportunity for children to be exposed to the best of human character. Carefully selected role models are dedicated to showing your child how to have fun, learn from others, and make friends in person rather than online. Camp allows kids to meet people from all over the world, every race, culture, and socioeconomic level. I still remember one of my counselors, Danny, from England, explaining to me, “The world is full of excuses. It doesn’t matter where you came from or what has happened to you. At the end of the day you choose how you treat others.” There is something magical about a summer camp experience. Each and every camp in the world is different. Not merely because of geography or location, but because of the traditions and people who have touched the camp. Every camp has hidden treasures of history and traditions that give it character and identity. Even with agency camps like the YMCA where there is a common mission, every camp is unique in its style, program, games, geography, traditions, and experience. Every...

Summer Break Research Paper

...The second semester of school arrives and grade-school students have one goal in mind; they simply want to survive until summer break. The day-dreams include fantasies of getting gorgeously tan, stretching out in a hammock to read a good book, and having wild adventures with friends every possible day. However is this the reality of what the traditional three month summer includes? No, many kids instead complain to their parents of their complete and utter boredom by the time July hits. In the states closer to the equator the sun makes the outdoors so scorchingly hot that people get dangerously sunburned rather than a bronzed tan. And in all honesty, the average American kid is not spending her/his free time by reading such an “ordinary thing” as a book. This reality of how the end months of summer break turn out do not necessarily mean that the whole break was a complete waste all together. After...

Summer Break Argumentative Essay

...friends are one in a million. There’s always too much to do and too little time. Students of all ages are facing a new level of pressure to take the hardest classes, do extracurriculars, and work on those things in any spare time in order to compete with their piers. The thought of summer break is often times the only thing that gives a student any hope of a good night's sleep and a chance to decompress. Students should be given the opportunity to take the summer off from learning new things because the assignments never end up being beneficial and can give the student a false preface of what the class has to offer....

Summer Palace

...The Summer Palace (Chinese Pinyin: Yí Hé Yuán), northwest of Beijing, is said to be the best preserved imperial garden in the world, and the largest of its kind still in existence in China. It is only a short drive (15 km) from central Beijing but seems like another world. Most people find they need to spend at least half a day here, there’s so much to see and enjoy in the gardens, buildings, and waterways. You can take a 10 minute boat-ride to see an island temple, sit and watch a traditional Chinese performance in the restored theatre (one of the three great traditional theatres in China), or explore the recreated traditional shopsby the river. The story goes, that former Emperors, or their concubines, used to enjoy 'pretend-shopping', as normally everything was bought for them. Just wandering round enjoying the different buildings and courtyards, or just taking in the views from one of the many vantage points is a pleasure. A visit involves plenty of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and protection from the weather (sun or rain) and be prepared to be enchanted. There are many pleasant spots along the way to pause and enjoy this much-loved summer retreat, as well as places to enjoy cool drinks and snacks. The Summer Palace (Chinese: 颐和园; pinyin: Yíhéyuán), is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens and palaces in Beijing, China. It serves as a popular tourist destination and recreational park. Mainly dominated by Longevity Hill (万寿山; 萬壽山; Wànshòu Shān) andKunming Lake (昆明湖; Kūnmíng...
