Explore the methods Yeats uses to express his feelings of anger and disillusionment in the poem 'September 1913'
Refer to language, structure and form.

Yeats, the poet of 'September 1913' wrote this poem to express his feelings of anger and disillusionment by using different literary techniques and by suing form and structure to present a serious and cynical poem. The poem aims to present Yeats' views on modern Ireland and how Ireland was becoming lost in a materialistic society it was shaping into. Yeats was an advocate for promoting Irish cultural nationalism, which he thought needed to retrieved as Ireland was under British rule at the time and key elements of Irish culture was being lost.

[Language] In the poem 'September 1913' there are many language devices used, to show Yeats' feelings of anger and disillusionment. One technique used is a metaphor, where Yeats expresses his anger and bitterness of the modern, materialistic Ireland. This is shown when an image of people "fumbling" in a "greasy till" is portrayed. This is Yeats expressing his anger about the self-absorbed and greedy employers of Ireland who did not care for the peasantry (working class) of Ireland at the time and abused their rights.

Furthermore, in the first stanza, Yeats addresses the audience directly by pointing the finger at those around him who are only interested in themselves: "what you need" who "save and pray". This presents Yeats' frustration with those who earn a living and pray just to fulfil the desire to look after themselves, which shows their hypocrisy, because if you are praying, surely you should be pious and follow the loving teachings of Jesus, but instead these self-absorbed, greedy employers only thought about themselves whilst abusing their fellow 'brothers'. The Dublin lock out was a prime example of workers being abused as they were being stopped from unionising to protect themselves. This increased Yeats' anger as 20,000 workers had to go on strike to receive their basic rights due to the inequality in the work place.

Also, Yeats uses sensory imagery: "You have dried the marrow from the bone". This emphasises on the fact that the employers are very self-interested which shows the materialistic individuals Ireland contains, which show the cheapening of contemporary Ireland. This presents the employers to be almost leech like beings as they rob the poor (lower classes) and leave them with hardly everything. Additionally, Yeats uses monosyllabic words which added energy and directness to Yeats’ anger and disillusionment.
[Structure] In addition, Yeats uses a tight form of eight syllables lines and alternative rhyming lines. Usually, ten syllable lines is used in British poems, but due to the fact of Yeats using eight syllable lines add more abruptness and intensity. From this, we can see anger and disillusionment in the poem. Yeats does this by comparing the common contemporary culture of Ireland that could have been, which he showed through the embodiment of revolutionaries, such as, Edward Fitzgerald, Robert Emmet, Wolfe Tone and O’Leary. By criticising modern Ireland he was trying to emphasise the corruptness that had taken over. This helped him present his frustration with and anger of the new Ireland.
[Verse Form] Furthermore, the poem has a song like rhythm to it. This is because Yeats knew that most of th irish population was illiterate one-third of the population lived in poetry. This helped Yeats to convey his message of presenting his anger of modern Ireland as he appealed to the widespread population of Ireland as it has a song like rhythm.
In conclusion, Yeats expresses his feeling of anger and disillusionment in the poem ‘September 1913’ through literary techniques, a intense eight syllable lined poem and a song like poem.

The theme of mans inhumanity to man isdescribed by the setting and characterization of Margot. The story takes place in an underground city on Venus. The sun only comes outevery seven years on Venus. Therefore, the children in Margots class are excited when the findout the sun is coming the next day. William, an insolent boy in Margots class, later confrontsMargot. He tries to convince her that the sun wont come out. She does not listen to his ranting, and therefore he and the other children grab Margot and lock her in a closet. During the time tosun is up, the children go crazy and are filled with joy. Then after the sun sets, they aregenuinely guilty and let Margot out. The setting and characterization connect with each other to form a chain reactionthat leads to the theme or inhumanity between men. For example, Margot is a very quiet girl, which is why people pick on her easily. She also has knowledge of the sun, which affects theother children and makes them envious. Her actions are very small, or not there at all. Forexample, when William pushed her, she did nothing in reply. Her most dominant trait, though,is her fragileness.  Bradbury made her actions lack strength and backbone. For this reason, andher knowledge of the sun, the children make her an outcast. All Summer in a Day

...All Summer in a Day Children grow up not knowing how the world works. They don’t understand why people are different from each other, and sometimes they react to differences with jealousy or cruelty. In All Summer in a Day, by Ray Bradbury, the children are jealous and even angry with Margot because she has had experiences that they have not, and she suffers unfairly as a result. You could write a literary analysis about the Figurative Language in this story: The children pressed together LIKE so many roses, so many weeds intermixed. Simile They were remembering gold or a yellow crayon or a coin large enough to build the world with. Metaphor They always awoke to the tatting drum, the endless snaking of clear bead necklaces upon the roof. Metaphor They turned on themselves, like a feverish wheel, all fumbling spokes. Simile She was an old photograph dusted from an album, whitened away and if she spoke at all her voice would be a ghosts. Metaphor It’s like a penny. Simile The great jungle that covered Venus, that grew and never stopped growing, tumultuously, even as you watched it. It was a nest of octopi, clustering up great arms of fleshlike week, wavering, flowering in this brief spring. Metaphor You could write an essay about what Ray Bradbury is saying about mob mentality in "All Summer and a Day". "All Summer in a Day" shows Margot, the quiet, invisible outcast of the class, being singled out by the rest of her classmates, after telling...

All Summer in a Day

...looked up. Sixteen pairs of concerned eyes met her. One by one, the children wrapped their arms around Margot’s body. She soon realized that these were the people who had taken her chance to see the sun. Yet, she felt no resentment or hate, just coldness inside of her. A girl with thin black hair walked over to Margot. She cleared her throat nervously. “It was beautiful,” stammered the girl. “It was just like you said it would be.” Margot could only nod; her voice seemed to have slipped away. “Excuse me,” Margot said meekly, forcing out the words.”I have to go home now.” The children nodded. They let her pass without argument. Marot walked over to the door, and then was gone, just like her hope of ever seeing the sun again. The next day, Margot’s classmates crowded around the school entrance excitingly, waiting impatiently for Margot to arrive. “She’s coming!” William exclaimed loudly. The children stepped away from the doorway, allowing Margot in. Margot was curious about what had made the children so elated. William took a step towards her, holding...

Depending on how an airline is organized and on how much work it ‘contracts out’, it may also employ chefs, cleaners, telesales personnel, insurance experts and accountants. Some airline employees will spend nearly all of their time in offices, whilst others work in passenger terminals, cargo terminals or aircraft hangars. Somewhere behind the scenes there will also be a group of managers who make sure that the airline and its many operations run smoothly. All these people are of different nationalities. This case study shows how one large company, Singapore Airlines, organizes itself to make the most effective use of its resources, particularly its human and fiscal resources to achieve its organizational goals. All Summer In A Day Analysis

...In All Summer In a Day by, Ray Bradbury, he tries to teach us that there will be tough and unfair times in one's life. This theme works because Margot only chance in seven years to see the sun and the kids threw that opportunity out the window by locking her in a closet. One idea for life has unfair and horrible times is Margot was always so eager, and patient for the sun to show, but she couldn’t see it because her peers in her class were jealous of her. When the class was mad at Margot, they threw her in a closet and lock it when the sun came out. All Summer In A Day Symbolism

All Summer In A Day Analysis

...Ray Bradbury’s dystopian story, “All Summer in a Day,” takes place on Venus—a planet where it rains all of the time. Margot, a recent arrival on Venus, remembers what the other children cannot. Grieving the loss of the sun, she remembers its beauty and warmth. The other children are jealous that she even remembers. This conflict creates a sad situation for all. Ray Bradbury creates the theme that when people cannot get over their own pain, they wind up hurting others and he illustrates this by using sentence variety and description. Jealousy and the pain that results from it shines through the story as a central issue impacting all characters. When people cannot get over their own pain, they hurt others is a theme demonstrated by the characters’...

The Summer Day Mary Oliver Analysis

...After reading “The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver, I realized how precious life is when you slow down and pay attention to the small details of life. Life is short when you are constantly focusing on what is happening tomorrow, or next week, or next month. But, when you slow down and soak in all the things that can be seen, touched, and felt in the present, life becomes richer and more meaningful. These small details of life last longer when more attention is paid to them. I think that the main character in the poem does not typically live in the moment and when she was out in nature, she realized how beautiful life is and decided that she needed to take a step back, take it all in and think about the significance her existence has. This segues...

All Summer In A Day Ray Bradbury

...We all have our differences. Some are accepted, others are judged and ridiculed until they change or accept the fact that they will be an outcast. It’s the sad truth, but it's the world we live in. Reading Ray Bradbury’s “All Summer in a Day” I realized that differences are good, differences make life interesting and we shouldn't judge others for theirs like Margot was. She was mocked simply for missing the sun--which only appears once every seven years on Venus. She would write poems, talk, and even draw pictures about the sun. Then one day her class mates got tired of her talk about the sun and locked her in the closet. This shows that these kids couldn’t see through her differences and rather simply just accepting her. On the other hand,...
