Education in Chinese Philosophy

...Erik Thomas Chinese Civilization 10/24/12 Jingyu XUE Compare the attitude towards education in Confucian, Taoist, and Legalist thought There were several salient schools of philosophy that arose during early years of the development of Chinese civilization. The era was subject to not only political fragmentation and excessive warfare, but also the birth of unique intellectual foundations as well. Confucius rallied together a school of thought that underscored the utmost importance of humanism and virtue. Han Fei and the legalist movement advocated for a centralized, domineering government that subordinated all citizens to absolute obedience. Taoism insisted on a spontaneous, free-spirited, and laissez-faire approach to life. These three prominent philosophies of the time were very different. For instance, they all placed radically different values on education. In particular, Confucianism promoted intellectual pursuit for both the individual and the populace, whereas Legalism and Taoism had a diverging attitude that was strongly against education. The Confucian ideology is the only one of the aforementioned schools to place a heavy emphasis on intellectual cultivation for both personal purposes and for the sake of a virtuous government. The philosophy looks down on those with faith in intuition and natural understanding, which is a notion that is present in Taoism. They believe that genuine understanding derives primarily from studying a subject; it does not necessarily...

I Want to Be Free

...The sun threw itself in the air as it rose through the darkness that had shadowed the whole area, soon replacing the coldness and sadness with warmth and happiness. Birds flew in the air after lying low from the darkness, chirping loudly as they felt alive and free once again on the winter day, The sea sparkled in the welcoming sun, swishing and swaying with joy, softly so that it wouldn’t distract anyone that was sleeping. Greenery swished in the breezy wind, the sky filled with blissful clouds, everyone outside with joy. Except me. That was the only thing keeping me alive in my compact room. The window shined with pride, the darkness fighting it with anger, trying to get rid of it, pausing as the curtain flew and covered most of light before it shone again. The beam reflected on my mirror, lighting the whole room, the darkness holding on to the last piece till finally it flew off. My room ached with delight as it finally shimmered in the warmth, the door finally getting the food it wanted as it could not reach before for it because it was shut tight away from the chilling darkness as if the sun was right inside my house. “I will be free, I will be free, I will be free…” I muttered to window as I stared at it, not blinking as if there was a staring contest going on, not noticing how suddenly my room had lit up and that the door was slowly, silently creaking open. A shadow appeared in front of me as it pushed me back from the window, realizing that someone was in my...

...living. She thinks to herself that her life had certainly not been a dull one and so many things had been “brewing” in her life, which she should have documented to the best of her ability. She reveals that she had been quite shy and timid at one time to even think of doing what she now thought was possible for her. The narrator goes on to describe in such beautiful detail the nature that surrounds the place where she lives. She describes the trees with their leaves of different shapes and sizes and colors of green, she describes the hills and the beginnings of mountains, she talks about the clouds little and big, and the yellow moon with the mist around it. While she thus describes this she sees a bird that flies against the sun so swiftly and disappears into the sky hardly leaving a shadow behind. When she sees this it brings to her realization that even this beauty that she was at present enjoying and which is so real right now will soon be gone like a shadow never to be witnessed again. Maybe this was why she had decided to write this poem so that it would be a beginning, a way in which she would eventually be contributing something of value to humanity,...

...Literary Commentary The song of the old mother Presented to: Miss Angela Presented by: Mohamed Nour Oasis school of Maadi 16/10/2012 English In this ten-line poem, Yeats talks about the life of an old woman who compares her harsh daily routine with that of carefree young women. In the first four lines, the old woman tells us that she has to get up at sunrise, start a fire and prepares to cook throughout the day and work. It is obvious that the mother is compared to the sun in a metaphorical way. First of all she states “I rise in the dawn” which is an image of the sun rising early in the morning. The fact that she says 'I must scrub and bake and sweep' gives the impression that she has no other choice, and does not enjoy this work. . The only time that the mother is allowed to stop working is at night. In the fourth line there is a personification they 'blink and peep', to give the old woman a hint that her day's work is finally over. Over the next four lines, the old mother comments on the life of the young girls around her, who is totally different than hers. She complains that young women have no work to do; they spend their time in day dreaming. They don't have to get up early like she does; they can stay in bed as long as they wish. All that matters is if their hair and their clothes match each other. In the last two lines of the poem, the old mother returns to thoughts of how she has to spend her days: there is a repetition of the word “must” that...

...Solar energy is simply the light and heat given off by the sun. most people actually want to know how we get power from solar energy. In other words, they really just want to know how we turn the sun’s heat and light energy into a usable power source. Both methods use solar panels to collect the solar energy but one process focuses on the sun’s heat and one process focuses on the sun’s light. The first process is called solar thermal which the energy works by harnessing the sun’s heat. The second process is the photovoltaic process Photovoltaic (PV) panels capture the light emitted by the sun and convert this energy into usable electricity. They do this by exciting the electrons in the solar energy which produces direct current (DC) electricity. DC electricity isn’t usable for most home needs. The DC electricity must go through a conversion process in a mechanical device known as an inverter. There many advantages of solar energy. The first one is Saving you money . After the initial investment has been recovered, the energy from the sun is practically FREE. It will save you money on your electricity bill if you have one at all. Solar energy does not require any fuel. The second one is Environmentally friendly. Solar Energy is clean, renewable (unlike gas, oil and coal) and sustainable, helping to protect our environment. It does not pollute our air by releasing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide or mercury into the atmosphere like many traditional forms of electrical...

Start a Business

...We want to start up a solar energy company, which manufactures products utilizing solar energy work. Below are several reasons why we would like to start up this company. Solar products have a huge market in domestic and overseas. Because solar products haven't promoted on a large scale yet. If we start up the solar energy company now, we will capture a large market share; Besides solar energy is a kind of free resource, people don't need to spend money on it, so people can be more pleased to accept solar products, and now we can manufacture many solar products, such as solar power generation system, solar cells, solar water heater, etc. Solar products will go into people's life soon. Here is another reason, solar products is the trend of future prouducts. Because exploiting and utilizing solar energy is becoming popular, and many countries have established "sunshine plan" already; The most important is that Solar energy can replace increasing shortage of natural resources, such as oil, coal and other non-renewable resources, it can relieve the current energy crisis; Meanwhile solar energy is a kind of clean resource. there is no pollution, when we use it, therefore I believe that most people will choose our products. In my opinion, the nature resource is impossible to satisfy the needs of the long-term development of human. Human must look for alternative sources of energy, and solar energy is the best choice of human. The future of solar energy's development will bright...

To Drill or Not to Drill?

...To Drill or Not to Drill? In Need of Alternative Sources of Energy Rosario Carrillo HUM / 114 October 17, 2012 In Need of Alternative Sources of Energy There are many people that are debating how to best meet energy needs in the United States. The argument is that the country must decrease its dependence on oil and invest in alternative sources of energy. The United States uses oil daily witch tends to be very expensive. People believe that to best meet energy needs would be to find alternative sources, such as wind, and solar power. The truth is that alternative energy needs to become a major investment for everyone. The conservation of energy can result in the increased of financial capital, environmental quality, and comfort. The oil supply is decreasing daily and evenly that source will be extinct so why not start with alternative sources. Some argue that alternative sources are too expensive, but fail to realize that if he or she was to invest in an alternative source such as solar panels that they will acquire adequate lighting and a more healthful life. ”Solar incentives for homeowners reduce the energy cost by 30 to 50 percent” (Chiras, 2012, 5p. ). This is one of the reasons why it is important to invest in alternative sources of energy because the amounts of saving are so high. The price of electricity will increase witch will cause people to spend thousands of dollars on electricity because of the rising cost of oil. By encouraging more people...

A Day on Lake Chicot

...Tiffany Burton Nicholson November 16, 2012 English Comp 1 A Day on Lake Chicot Waking up to see a beautiful, blue, sky on a hot, July, summer morning is my kind of scenery. As I roll out of bed raising my arms high above my head to stretch, I can not help but admire the view of the sun beaming down on the twenty mile long oxbow, natural lake. My anticipation to participate in the water filled activities that awaits the day is at an all-time high. I immediately rush to my swim suit draw, and pull out my favorite hot pink swimming suit. I rush down stairs to start the day off with my daddy’s famous chocolate gravy and biscuits, which is an original breakfast that we have before a full day on the lake. Before we take off on the boat, we have to make sure that we are fully prepared. First I make sure we have all the essential items like beach towels, sunscreen, tanning lotion, drinks in the ice chest, and snack food. While I am getting those items together, my dad and brother are making sure that our two decker party barge has a full tank of gas, plenty of life jackets, and the fun but dangerous intertube. After everything is loaded onto the red and tan barge, we have to unload it off the trailer into the lake using our boat ramp. This is usually a task, but definitely worth the hassle. Now that we are in the water the fun begins! As soon as my dad gets to the middle of the lake, there will be some big splashes from me and my friends jumping in. Jumping off into the lake...

...ventilation and industrial process air and water for commercial facilities such as laundries, car washes and fitness centers. SOLAR ENERGY [pic] BY: CARSON COLE DOMESTIC HOT WATER Another common way to use the sun's heat is with the use of a solar domestic hot water system. Depending on how the system is used, a typical system will provide 50 to 75 per cent of a family's hot water needs. With water heating accounting for about 20 per cent of home energy use, a solar DHW system is an attractive method of reducing a home's fossil fuel consumption. A solar water heater typically uses glazed collectors mounted on a roof and connected to a storage tank. Fluid is pumped to the collectors where it is warmed by the sun, then returned to a heat exchanger where it heats the water in a storage tank. Year-round residences often will have a additional backup water heater. Modern solar water heaters are relatively easy to...

Tithonus - Narrative Methods

...A) Write about the techniques Tennyson uses to tell the story in Tithonus The purpose of this essay is to discuss narrative methods and techniques used by Tennyson to tell the story in the poem Tithonus. Tennyson uses the theme of light to effectively illustrate the intense love Tithonus felt for Aurora but simultaneously this also highlight the love Tithonus will never feel again. This is shown by constantly mentioning the East where the sun rises, and also by the words ‘Thy sweet eyes brighten slowly….yet they blind the stars’- by saying her eyes blind the stars Tennyson could also be saying how he (Tithonus) too was at one point blinded by his love for her. The use of imagery within the poem like ‘glimmering’ and ‘lights’ gives readers the idea that his life was happy with her in it yet, the contrast of language, ‘gloomy’, ‘shadows’, ‘twilight’ underlines the fact that he is no longer joyful as he is now without her. Another reason we could argue that he is no longer happy is that he may be envious of how she is immortal and forever youthful but he is immortal but consistently aging; this interpretation is supported by the continuous mentioning of immortal youth ‘To dwell in the presence of immortal youth, Immortal age beside immortal youth’. Also the use of the word twilight suggests that Tithonus state is that he is caught in the middle, forever watching the circle of life without him in it – ‘the woods decay…dies the...

The Creation

...THE CREATION by: James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) ND God stepped out on space, And He looked around and said, "I'm lonely -- I'll make me a world."   And far as the eye of God could see Darkness covered everything, Blacker than a hundred midnights Down in a cypress swamp.   Then God smiled, And the light broke, And the darkness rolled up on one side, And the light stood shining on the other, And God said, "That's good!"   Then God reached out and took the light in His hands, And God rolled the light around in His hands Until He made the sun; And He set that sun a-blazing in the heavens. And the light that was left from making the sun God gathered it up in a shining ball And flung it against the darkness, Spangling the night with the moon and stars. Then down between The darkness and the light He hurled the world; And God said, "That's good!"   Then God himself stepped down -- And the sun was on His right hand, And the moon was on His left; The stars were clustered about His head, And the earth was under His feet. And God walked, and where He trod His footsteps hollowed the valleys out And bulged the mountains up.   Then He stopped and looked and saw That the earth was hot and barren. So God stepped over to the edge of the world And He spat out the seven seas; He batted His eyes, and the lightnings flashed; He clapped His hands, and the thunders rolled; And the waters above the earth came down, The cooling waters came down.   Then...
