...Krakatoa 1. The man visiting the island was a German soldier named Christopher Schweitzer (pg.46). According to his account, the sailors were collecting lightweight rocks, (pumice Stones) from the ocean in buckets (pg. 49) 2. The first rigorous mention of plate tectonics was published in the British journal Nature by J. Tuzo Wilson (pg. 99). 3. Captain Hollmann described the clod as follows: “we saw from the island a white cumulus cloud, rising fast. It rose almost vertically until, after about half an hour, it had reached a height of about 11,000 meters. Here it started to spread like an umbrella, probably because it had reached the height of the anti-trade winds, so that soon only a small part of blue sky was seen on the horizon. When at about 4.00 in the afternoon a light SSE breeze started, it brought a fine ash dust which increased strongly…until the entire ship was covered in all parts with a uniform fine grey dust layer”.(pg.157) 4. The telegraph lines would fail because they were not water proof and would break. With the discovery of gutta-percha, (a rubbery, workable, waterproof sap), they were able to waterproof the lines and keep them from breaking (pg. 185). 5. The messages sent from Anjer Port reads as follows; “Krakatoa was beginning a major eruption. It was “vomiting fire and smoke”. It is so dark in town that it was now no longer possible to see one’s hand before one’s eyes. What were the instructions?” (pg. 213) 6. He initially refused...

...The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was a megathrust earthquake that occurred underneath the ocean floor. The earthquake occurred sortly after christmas at 00:58:53 UTC on Sunday, 26 December 2004, with an epicenter off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake and the tsunami has various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, South Asian tsunami, Indonesian tsunami, and the Boxing Day tsunami. The earthquake was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters or 98 ft. high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. The megathrust earthquake was unusually large in geographical and geological extent. An estimated 1,600 kilometres of fault surface slipped (or ruptured) about 15 metres along the subduction zone where the India Plate slides under the overriding Burma Plate. The slip did not happen instantaneously but took place in two phases over a period of several minutes. First the seismographic and acoustic data indicate that the first phase involved a rupture about 400 kilometres long and 100 kilometres wide, located 30 kilometers beneath the sea bed—the largest rupture...

...How Plate Tectonics affected Thailand Monique Cano, Rachael Watkins, Micheal Bocanegra, Manuel Rojo, Griselda Hurtado University of Phoenix GLG/150 Exploration of Earth Sciences DB14ELC06, Tiffany Alvarez July 31, 2014 How Plate Tectonics affected Thailand In the early 20th century, there was a theory developed by meteorologist Alfred Wegener that proposed that all of the continents had once been connected in a single supercontinent called Pangaea. The theory of Plate Tectonics is the theory that the rigid layer of the lithosphere is divided into a couple of dozen plates that move around across the Earth’s surface relative to each other, like slabs on a lake. In geologic terms the word “plate” means a large slab of solid rock and “tectonics” means to build. The words together define how the Earth’s surface is built up of moving plates. The theory says the Earth’s lithosphere is made up of individual plates that are broken into over a dozen large and small pieces of solid rock. The fragments ride next to each other on top of the Earth’s lower mantle that has more fluid. It creates different types of plate boundaries that haves shaped the Earth’s landscape over millions of years. Wegener believed the continents gradually began to drift apart about 300 million years ago. This theory became known as Continental drift. (PBS online 1997) On December 26, 2004 a 9.0 magnitude quake struck under the Indian Ocean near West Coast of the Indonesian...

...Slow lorises are primates native to South and Southeast Asia. There are five species of slow loris but the Sunda slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) and the pygmy slow loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus) are the ones most often found in Cambodia. The slow loris has a round head with short ears and large, forward-facing eyes, which reflect light, giving off a brilliant orange-red “eyeshine” at night. These shy nocturnal animals live in trees, and are the only existing venomous primate. They produce a toxin in glands located on their elbows, which when mixed with their saliva, produces a toxic bite. Omnivorous creatures, slow lorises feed on fruit, tree gum, insects, eggs, lizards, birds, and even small mammals. While they may look slow, they are actually capable of short bursts of speed, often springing forward to catch insects with both hands. The primate, whose big eyes and timid demeanor has garnered it internet fame and media attention, is now threatened with extinction as they become increasingly popular as pets. Listed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable, their populations are expected to decline another 30% in the next 22 years. When captured by poachers and traders, they are often stuffed in crowded cages and exposed to hours of daylight; their teeth are painfully clipped off using nail cutters, a procedure that more than 90% of the time leads to infection and death. Used as medicine, their bodies are then spread into a crucifiction position and smoked. Wildlife Alliance’s Wildlife...

...Sundas Abad 0581BHMATHS1519 Ma’am Hira Shah English 1104 17 February 2016 THE MAIN THEME OF STORY “I USED TO LIVE HERE ONCE” No one can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow so enjoy every moment of life and collect some joyful memories relates with our life. The theme of story I Used To Live Here Once is “Death” and the story is all about the journey of life which leads to the past. Journey of life is that aspect which we have to follow to reach our destination. Basically, the journey of life ends at a single point that is death because it is the endpoint of our life because this is a temporary world. In order to reach our destination we face many difficult situations. Same as discussed in the story that she crossed the river by stepping the different kinds of stones. Life is also based on such kind of problems, some are easy to carry while some are unbearable but still we have to face them to reach at the last point that is “death”. Life and death are two basic aspect of human being’s life because symbolically we are living to be dead one day. Only memories and feelings left that we recall or remember in our imagination. Similarly, in the story the girl is remembering her past by walking on the way where she used to live once. Death directly relates with the memories because only memories could be remember with some special feelings. People have different capability to remember the past memories and different ...
