...purpose is to demonstrate that a close reading of the main protagonist, Willy Loman, suggests that his notion of success in relation to the American Dream can be regarded as narcissistic. This essay will examine this by first observing how Willy´s notion of success is represented in the play, then look at how his understanding of it can be viewed from a narcissistic standpoint. The results I have found in my analysis show that there is a connection between Willy’s understanding of success and his narcissistic behavior. He displays traits such as grandiosity, arrogance, need of specialness and denial of emotions. His relationship with other characters reveals his lack of empathy, manipulation and exploitation of others as well as his need of superiority and fear of inferiority. The conclusion is that Willy and his notion of success could be considered as narcissistic. ...Language problem in India manifests itself in the form of dislike of other languages and linguistic groups, claim of superior status to one language compared to others and imposition of Hindi and Sanskrit on unwilling people. When linguisim demonstrates itself through political actions and programmes, linguistic fanaticism results. Language riots, anti-Hindi agitation, anti-English agitations are the manifestations of the language problem in India. Prevalence of racism in subtle forms is proved when some Aryans assert their superiority over the native races of India and propagate the view that their culture is the basic culture of India. Differences in dresses, food habits, feasts and festivals, folk arts and classical arts etc. are natural and healthy signs of regional diversity in India. But dislike of people of other states and regions, sons of the soil theory, interstate border and river disputes etc. are the manifestations of regionalism. The problems arising out of diversity in India can be effectively dealt with only if the modern norms of equality and social justice are not merely preached but effectively practiced. Wrong interpretation of the natural attachment to one’s language, region and culture as something inherently bad has to be given up even while promoting the secular values of equality and social justice. India is a large country and there is need of Unity in Diversity in India. Equality of opportunity in education and employment, equal promotion of all...

...system in place. She KEEPS MODIFYING and MONITORING continuously. * *The case also stresses the importance of good team design similar to the C&S Wholesale Grocers* Lisa Benton Case Summary In my opinion, the Lisa Benton case study is really not that important (sorry). The major point is boss-subordinate relationships and, by extensions, interpersonal relationships period. Regardless, the story is kind of interesting (and not because it was the only case study in which major characters were more than likely getting it on). The summary is as follows: while Lisa Benton she attended Harvard Business School, worked as the first female manager for Right-Away stores, a company where she won accolades for her “roll-up-your sleeves” approach and charmed the president, Scott Kingston, so much that he offered her a full-time job at Right-Away stores after she graduated. However, she was also offered a job at Houseworld’s Care Division, appealing because of its classical and famous excellent marketing training. She chose to turn down the higher salary and a bigger position partly because of her worries of taking on too much responsibility and partly because of Right-Away’s rundown warehouse and lack of other female manager and, instead, joined Houseworld. At Houseworld, she was charmed by the friendly and professional people she met initially but ended up under Deborah Linton, who immediately made it clear she was biased against Harvard MBAs. The friendly people she had met...

...personalities was based on the conscious versus the unconscious because more importantly we are always working on ourselves and managing our future. Summary of major principles One of the first major principles of individual psychology is “The Source for Human Striving.” Due to Alfred Adler’s early experience with his illness he felt he provided more on the inferiority and superiority complexes. In individual psychology inferiority complexes are a natural circumstance of all individuals or otherwise known as all humans striving (Shultz, 116). To overcome the inferiority complex you need to have compensation, which are the effort people need to conquer the feeling of inferiority and to tackle for more high levels of development. According to the individual psychology theory this action starts from the time you are an infant to when that infant is aware of their parents. As a baby you know your parents are the courageous and great influencers. In the striving for superiority principle we push to make ourselves perfect and complete. We want to be able to be superior over others. Striving for superiority is the desire to be able to accomplish something that inspires us. Everyone has the...

...The Complexity of Privilege and Domination Privilege always occurs at the expense of others. Allan Johnson states, “The trouble we’re in privileges some groups at the expense of others. It creates a yawning divide in levels of income, wealth, dignity, safety, health, and quality of life” (Johnson 7). Allan Johnson states this in Chapter 1 of his book Privilege, Power and Difference and it is one of the most powerful statements in the whole book. Privilege creates a great divide between people. This can have a negative lasting effect, if not under control. Society has divided people into two groups: superior and inferior. The superior groups are the ones that are privileged in society and the inferior ones are ones that are underprivileged; however, there is a certain complexity that comes with privilege. There are so many different combinations of race, gender, class, sexual orientation or disability status that can occur so finding a person who fits all of the above is difficult. Ideally, it would be a white, wealthy, heterosexual male who is not disabled. Majority of people in the world do not fit that description. It is much more likely that an individual would be privileged in one or two of those categories. The complexity of privilege lies in the fact that individuals who are seen as superior and therefore privileged are entitled to have more opportunities than those who are underprivileged and inferior; however, this is not guaranteed. Allan Johnson’s...

...The environment of the organization is an important parameter which enhances the overall productivity of the employees. Recently three incidents have been reported which have resulted in deteriorating the environment and have resulted in situations that have harmed the culture of the organization. The situations are described and analyzed below in detail. David and Jeremy: A confrontational conversation took place between David, director of the company, and Jeremy an ambitious researcher. Which eventually resulted in resignation of Jeremy and loss of crucial company asset. David’s intentions were not to get rid of Jeremy but to convey the negative feedback in a neutral way. David did not like conflicts whereas Jeremy was driven by his superiority complex because of the higher status of his academic background and he always took a defensive stance when being criticized. At the start of the conversation, David opted for the indirect approach and started with a lighter note to ease the flow of conversation, but judging Jeremy`s response, he adopted the painful-but-quick bombshell (direct) approach and became blunt about Jeremy’s attitude which was affecting the performance of the department. While, Jeremy got the wrong impression at the start and had assumed David had called him to praise about his recent performances, so he maintained his haughty attitude. David could have handled the situation better by splitting the conversation into two parts. In the first meeting he could have...

...With the announcement of the big news that there is an opening up more combat positions to women in US military, has been discussed very deeply and widely, whether the military high command could keep the cohesiveness that they are maintaining at present. Reasons to the doubts are as follows. Inclusion of females to the US army is not a new measure. However, up to the announcement, certain positions were reserved only for male combatants. These male combatants are specially trained and strongly motivated. Their cohesive levels are very high. Due to these reasons the present male combatants may feel women are weaker and inferior and will not fit to the roles that are considered masculine. This belief or feeling will be a strong barrier to the female combatants’ inclusion to the present combat culture and this will affect the cohesiveness within the combat group. Moreover this will be a new experience for both male and female combatants. When both parties have not build trust and confidence of their capacities and capabilities, the military commandos may feel the male combat solders will not adhere to the commands of the seniors at a heated battle. Hence, cohesiveness is a very important factor in heated battle fields. In addition, inclusion of women in the front line battle positions it is expected that there would be a possibility of sexual excitement which may disturb the cohesiveness of the combat battle groups. This will further create jealousies, misunderstandings and interpersonal...

...The Picture Superiority Effect Abstract: Participants were split into two groups and each group took part in a different condition of the study. One group looked at images and the other group looked at words. There was a visuospatial task and then the participants had to recall as much of the stimuli they were assigned to as possible. Results proved to be as expected; that participants remembered images much more than they remembered words. However there were some issues with the study which were analysed in the discussion section. Introduction: The aim of this experiment was to find out whether people were more able to recall pictures or words more after seeing them for a very short amount of time. There have been many experiments into the picture superiority effect. It is said that “free verbal recall is generally higher for items presented as pictures than for items presented as words.” (Paivio and Csapo) This study sets out to test that theory – but with a visuospatial task added in between seeing the stimuli and the recall. This is in order to test whether people recall words or images better after a period of distraction. s. In a study by (Paivio 1991) he claimed that pictures have the advantage over words because they are amenable to semantic encoding through two different routes whereas words are processed only through a verbal pathway. This study suggests images will be superior in people’s memories to words as they have more ways of being memorised by the human...

...Zac Bublitz Views of the Status of Women Throughout his letters to Heloise, Abelard emphasizes the importance and significance of intention within the body, heart and soul as opposed to physical actions and deeds. To Abelard, a person is defined more correctly by his or her true desire, feelings and intention spiritually in addition to his or her actions, rather than what he or she might say or appear to be. Abelard keeps true to this belief while considering the status of women. On the contrary, Heloise formulates her view of the status of women based more upon their physicality. Heloise’s distresses regarding the status of women, more specifically the status of women in her convent, stem from the physical differences and inferiority women were understood to have. While Abelard does make mention to the physical weakness of women and Heloise does reference the importance of intention, the two view the status of women differently. Although women were universally accepted as being the inferior sex, Abelard believes through spirituality, commitment, and intention that women can certainly rank equally and even higher than men. In the opening lines of his letter responding to Heloise’s concern, Abelard quickly presents his understanding and view of the status of women through the words of Luke’s Gospel in which it reads, “As he came to call and redeem both sexes, he deigned to unite them in the true monkhood of his congregation, so that the authority of this profession is therefore...

...No work is superior or inferior in itself. Work is work. It is absolutely wrong to consider any work as high or low. The work itself is a dignity. Every work has some dignity attached to it. It is improper for anybody to think that a certain kind of work is undignified or below his status. No work is mean or low. Since the very dawn of civilization man has been doing all kinds of work without any hitch and hesitation. All the religions of the world have enjoined man to do his work honestly. All the philosophers of the world have preached that no work is such as to undermine the dignity of man. “Thou shalt eat thy bread by the sweat of thy brow” was the curse of God upon the first man, Adam. God himself ordered man to work and work hard. All great men of the world have themselves acted according to this dictate of God. We in India have the example of our Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, who used to do every kind of work in his ashram. Not only he but all the inmates of the ashram were required to do all kinds of work with their own hands. Sweeping, cleaning, spinning, washing and even disposal of nightsoil was done by the inmates of the ashram. And nobody in the ashram thought that any of these things was below his dignity or would lower him in the eyes of others. The dignity of labour means that every kind of work is dignified. It also implies that dignity can be achieved only by hard work. The dignity of labour does necessarily cover manual labour I.e., physical labour...

...Teamwork in a simple layman language is when two or more people combine and work together to attain a common aim. In formal language same can be described as readiness of group of people working amalgamated towards a common goal creating positive environment with one another’s support combining their strengths to enhance the performance in order to achieve success towards their desired task. Teamwork is commonly understood as combination of attitude as well as conduct. Understanding and managing these factors will influence people to work together efficiently. There is no superior and inferior, everyone has to work hand-in-hand valuing and respecting their share and ideas .If someone’s feel superior, the others get demoralized and this attitude will reflect negatively on the team and teamwork. Similarly, if any member feels inferior will hesitate to share his/her ideas and then it is difficult to judge that how valued that idea would have been for the success and to which level that contribution would have taken the desired goal. Also, indifference of any member will surely reflect in final result. Therefore, open heart and mind is the key to success in teamwork. Although there are innumerable benefits of teamwork but as every coin has two sides, similarly everything in this world has positive and negative aspects that cannot be overlooked. Difference in opinion and clashes are unavoidable and are very much expected but the essentiality of a successful team is only...

...Imagine a young man standing low in stature. He perceives his short height as a handicap, causing over-aggressiveness and authoritative nature. This young man begins to compensate for his perceived fault, seeking roles in power and domination over large numbers over people. Landing a CEO job in a multi million dollar company, he masks his insecurity of his height. This psychological condition is widely known as a Napoleon Complex. Complexes were developed by, as well as found in the works of, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. They believed our core emotions and perceptions affect our unconscious. If these emotions transform into a theme, a complex is developed. As humans all experience different situations and broad emotions, these sentiments give people a complex at points in their lives. Classification of Complexes Several varieties of complexes had been noted and discovered through research and experiments. According to Jungian analyst Dr. Mary Ann Mattoon (1999), “The most widely known complex, the “inferiority complex”, was identified by Alfred Adler, Sigmund Freud’s associate. He associated emotional problems to the fact each of us had a weakness or defect in a part of of the body.” A complex forms to compensate for the weakness. Similar to the Napoleon complex aforementioned above, the person will desire power in a different areas of their life to submerge the negative feelings about themselves. The inferiority complex is one of many complexes that can derive from a major...

...American Combat Aircraft Superiority During the Cold War At the end of World War 2, Winston Churchill stated that an “iron curtain” had descended upon Europe. That “iron curtain” was the ideological and political barrier that separated Eastern and Western Europe. It could be speculated that when said curtain dropped, the Cold War began. Throughout the Cold War, numerous technological advances took place, despite combat never taking place. One of the most notable advances made during the war was the development and improvement of aeronautical weapons and technology. The two frontrunners of these advances were the two major “belligerents” of the war; the United States of America and the Soviet Union. As the war progressed, numerous fighter planes,...
