Sophia Zheng Baldasaro Advance Senior Seminar December 12th, 2013 The patriarchy in society is very much evident in England during this time period. All those who held positions of power and prestige or were of great significance were typically men. Because of the expectations in society, women, in particular, seem to be overly concerned with this idea of fitting into their perspective molds and conforming to the stereotypical gender roles. In Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, Woolf seems to places emphasis on the lives of a variety woman, portraying the way they fare in their everyday lives. But regardless of social class and backgrounds, through an assortment of different women, Woolf seems to comment on how insignificant or trivial the lives of typical women in this time period. Clarissa is the epitome of a repressed woman who conforms to traditional customs and places her main concerns on rather petty seeming things like physical appearance and parties. Right from the start, Clarissa is seen to place an extreme importance on materialistic. She touches on how she feels like a schoolgirl standing next to the “almost too well dressed always” Hugh (Woolf, 6). Though, ironically, Clarissa actually cares much less for clothing in a fashion sense and is more concerned with appearing high in class, fitting in and appealing to others. She is, to some degree juxtaposed, with Rezia who seems to be genuinely interested in clothing due to the influences of her youth but is portrayed as a complete outsider while Clarissa aims to be an insider. Clarissa also places tremendous emphasis on her parties. Throughout the entire day, Clarissa interminably thinks of her parties. It seems that after every moment she is either

reminding people of her party or thinking about how to prepare for the party no matter the circumstance. To the present Clarissa, feeling and looking of her

Superman and Me

...Writing Assignment 1 In Sherman Alexie’s “Superman and Me”, he’s a Spokane Indian boy that found a love in reading books. Alexie was one of the Indian that didn’t live to the expectation of being an uneducated Indian. He later realized that his father was the reason for his success because he inspired him to do as him when he picked up his first book. Alexie was one of six children his mom and dad had to rise on a minimum wage job in an Indian reservation. They were poor but in the reservation they were middle class because they’re father was educated and most Indians didn’t even have that. He said he had “an older brother, a sister who was deceased, two younger twin sisters and an adopted younger brother” (89). Alexie’s father was the inspiration to his life because of this, being that he was an avid reader. Books were the only thing that Alexie’s family really had an abundance of so he wanting to follow his father he felt it was perfect to read. Before Alexie found his love for reading; he discovered what a paragraph was. And this is all he needed to split the world he knew up into an exquisite story. Initially, Alexie seen things around him in paragraphs like the Indian reservation, his family his school. Purpose being he had no idea what a paragraph meant but he knew it “was a fence that held words” (89) extracting from his passage. Beowulf and Superman

...Beowulf &Superman A hero is defined in classical mythology as a man, especially the son of a god and a mortal, who is famous for possessing some extraordinary gift. Beowulf, the title character of an epic poem and Superman, a more modern day hero are both prime examples. Beowulf and Superman exhibit several differences, but they also share some similar qualities. Beowulf possessed great strength that separated him from other men. Being able to use a sword that no ordinary man was able to carry gives the feeling that Beowulf is something more than a human being. It makes him special and causes him to stand out from all other men. Fame is something that makes a hero more noted. Beowulf’s popularity had spread all over the world. He never let this go to his head and he never thought that he was better than everyone else because of it. By engaging in this foolish contest, Beowulf nearly got himself killed trying to prove he was better than Brecca. Jealousy is never a good trait, especially for a hero. Revenge is never a trait of a true hero. A hero has no scores to settle. A true hero should fight only to protect others and not out of his own rage. Also, with Beowulf being a human being, he was not invincible. Beowulf didn’t realize this until he fought the dragon. He knew nothing of the dragon, it’s strengths, weaknesses or powers. Beowulf found out what the dragon was capable of and what its powers were. He knew that it could breathe fire, so he got a shield that...

Waiting For Superman Essay

...After watching Waiting for Superman and reading What ‘Superman’ got wrong, point by point, both stances seemed to place themselves at the far ends of a spectrum that I found myself somewhere in the middle on for most of the issues brought up. Waiting for Superman is clearly the work of a non-teacher, as the reforms showcased in the film highlight radical change to teaching staff, the dissolving of teachers unions, and the placement of the child’s needs above the adults. What ‘Superman’ got wrong, point by point is (as stated) the rebuttal to the movie from the view of a teacher. The educator who wrote this essay, Rick Ayers, shows his support for teachers unions, the addressing of the curriculum and method that we teach kids and not the people...

Clark Kent, reporter from the town of Smallville, but one phone booth change later he’s Superman, an alien sent to Earth who has chosen to fight for good. Both support the general population and can often be found giving aid to those who can’t defend themselves. Many people believe that Superman is superior in every way, shape, and form. They would be wrong. Batman is the more helpful and heroic icon in almost every aspect and situation. Superman fights many large scale battles almost exclusively against larger than life villains. ...I am not a big fan of superheroes nor their movies. I’m more of a documentary type of movie person. My roommate, Jasmine, wanted me to accompany her to see the new movie Batman Vs. Superman, I said, “why not watch a movie of a different genre?” This film is a continuation from when Superman battled Zod from the movie Man of Steel. Where the loss of life and collateral damage left many feeling angry and helpless, including crime-fighting billionaire Bruce Wayne who is Batman. In my opinion, I thought it was a pretty good movie with a great story and a lot of action. As I review different articles about the movie Batman Vs. Superman, many fans didn’t like the film and gave bad reviews. Seitz, Matt article review of, “Batman V Superman: Dawn of...

The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me

...Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" I feel very shocked. I really can't remember what I was doing when I was young. Maybe I was watching TV, playing with my friends, having a afternoon nap and so on. At the same age, he started to reading foreign language books and comic books , this phenomenon will never happen in my life. Maybe he was smart and arrogant, but without the atmoshere of his family and his pervenance spirit ,he won't became such a successful people. His father like reading books and brought them from the pawnshops and secondhand and the books were so many that were stacked in crazy piles in the bathroom, bedroom and living room. He use every moments to read books such as lunch time, in the car when his family traveled, in shopping malls and so on. He also have a goodness heart and must be very patriotic. Because he always worried about the future of the Indian children and visit schools and teach creative writing to them. what;s more, although the children refuse and resist him, he never give up to save their lives. I don' t really like the Indian thinking. They hate the smart Indian people and expected to be stupid. Like what he said in the book the Indian children were monosyllabic in front of the non-Indian teachers, but after come home they were talking about complicated stories and jokes at the dinner table. How could they do this ? To be smart is everyone want and they just want to be stupid. In comic book panel Alexie remembers Superman breaks through a door...

Comparing The Dark Knight Returns And Joe Shuster's Superman

...With a comic book industry almost completely constructed of funny cartoons and detective based mysteries America needed something fresh. The “Golden Age” of comics started off with fan favorites like Superman, Batman, and Wonder woman. All of which revolved around sad stories of orphanage and living their life to fight crime for the greater good none of which were that original. Many years and further thoughts of storyline brought a landmark pair of graphic novels from 1986, Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's The Watchmen, which ushered in an age of superheroes that sided with the “bad guys” to introduce sympathy for why the villain does what they do. Despite these modifications the superhero continues to...

His Cape of Stars and Stripes

...strengthen people’s moral values. One great example of a superhero that must be the inspiration of many is Superman. Superman is famous for his big muscles coupled with super strength and other special powers. But, his fans did not base their love and awe on these. First, they love Superman for his humanity despite not being human. Many of his fans even believe that Superman is more human than humans. Humanity here means the sense of people to be a group and not to be ignorant individuals. Superman believes that it is true that humans must climb their own destiny but they still need him to catch them when they fall. This is because he cares unconditionally. Moreover, despite the lurking evil everywhere, he still believes in the inherent good nature of people. Second, Superman, for them, is more than just a crime buster. He is, as his “S” symbol say in Kryptonian, the hope for all. Third, Superman is not a superhero because of his powers. He is a superhero because of his ability to prevail despite how difficult the condition is. Regardless of his tragic childhood without guiding parents, he faces life with a smile. Superman, then, is a good man. And a good man is an American. Some would argue and say, “No, he’s an alien!” I could go shallow and reply, “No, he lives in America and he works in a metropolitan newspaper in America. So, he’s an American,” or I can prove that Superman is an American through Woodrow Wilson’s definition. First, a...
