COURSE DESCRIPTION Supply Chain Management involves the flows of materials and information among all of the firms that contribute value to a product, from the source of raw materials to end customers. We will integrate issues from marketing (channels of distribution), logistics, and operations management to develop a broad understanding of a supply chain. By taking a strategic perspective, we will focus on relatively long term decisions involving the investment in productive resources, configuration of processes, product designs, and development of parterships with suppliers and channels of distribution. Although the development of analytical tools is not one of the primary objectives of the course, students should be comfortable with quantitative analysis. By the end of the course, you should have developed an appreciation for the major strategic issues trade-offs in supply chain management as well as the ability to use conceptual frameworks to make decisions. Managers have to take a decision on the product designs consisting of 1-4 options, arrive at expected monthly demand and plan a sourcing policy. In the end of each year, player will see the financial report and, based on the report, do some necessary adjustments for decisions next year. Analysis: Design At the beginning, we want to be conservative. So we choose designs which have no effect on our cost. Then in coming years, based on our knowledge and information provided by managers, we chose designs which we think are important for customers. Supplier choose and production For Model A, we chose “farfar away” supplier, because Model A is a normal item that we wouldn’t suffer huge markdowns in the end of each year. In addition, compared with “far away” supplier, “farfar away” supplier has lower setup cost, though its lead time is longer. But we can order more to manage the stock out issue. For Model B, we chose “pretty close” supplier in the first year, because we want to choose a lower setup cost option and because Model B is a high-end one that we wouldn’t suffer high stock out cost.
