Quite the lengthy name for something that is simple. Supraspinatus tendonitis is the inflammation/irritation of the tendon of the supraspinatus muscle. Let’s break down the name. Supraspinatus is a muscle located on the upper back. It attaches from the superior portion of the scapula (shoulder blade) to the greater tubercle of the humerus and assist with shoulder movements. The tendon of the supraspinatus muscle is located on the rotator cuff. It is composed of thick, fibrous band of tissues that is connected to the shoulder joint. Tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon. ‘-itis’, from medical terminology, refers to inflammation. It is an acute diagnosis of the tendon when it is overloaded, causing pain and swelling from tears in the tissue. The tissue is still…show more content… Therefore, an inflammation to the tendon located on the shoulder blade is known as supraspinatus tendonitis. Rotator cuff damage occurs more and more as age increases in which the tendon begins to degenerate. It is a common injury in athletes (swimmers, football players, discus throw, tennis players, etc) and workers (construction, laborers, etc) that involves with overhead motions and overwork this tendon by throwing things. Pain can be found in the deltoid region and the posterior shoulder capsule. You will know the pain if you have this because it’s pretty common. A physical inspection includes a variety of test regarding the active range of motion of the shoulder such as flexing forward flexion, adduction/abduction, external/internal rotation, and extension. Rest, ice, compress and elevate is a common therapy to reduce nonsurgical, less severe ‘-itis’ pain and motion. But,
