A Rosenburg case of a patient with malignant melanoma was shown to use gene therapy to make T-cells (killer white blood cells) specifically aimed at tumor cells. Melanoma is an incredibly dangerous form of cancer because “once malignant melanoma has metastasized, with cells from the primary tumor seeding themselves elsewhere in the body to grow secondary tumors, the prognosis becomes truly dismal. (Spiesel)” What Rosenburg did was he picked out a special T-cell that could recognize antigens on the melanoma cells. Then the T-cells were injected back into the patient’s body and regressed the melanoma. Another case of melanoma treatment was where a melanoma patient had their cells “genetically engineered to produce the killer T-cells that targeted the melanoma cells. (Spiesel)” The T-cells then multiplied and brutally attacked the tumor cells with no side effects. Now what genetic engineering wants to do is to advance to the point where scientists can look at a tumor, determine what type of T-cell to use against the tumor, and construct the T-cells necessary.
