...In Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, Susan Cain examines the perceptions of introverts in a world of extroverts. Cain offers a raw view into the ways an introvert’s power of internal examination and observance can positively affect the world if extroverts would make an effort to step back and allow their quiet leadership to shine. Although, this personality type is largely discounted as “shy” and too passive, Cain demonstrates that the introverted personality type is not only beneficial to the progression of society but is necessary in the world. Personality is a large aspect of culture and relationships and is instrumental in the interaction, competition, progression, and direction of society in its entirety....

...In this Ted talk titled, “The power of introverts” by Susan Cain, Cain speaks on how introverts shaped this world even though the world praises extroverts instead. She discusses how the world be more productive if we let students work by themselves and come together as a group instead of initially meeting as a group and working. She says people should work alone first because a lot of time quiet people get under talked by the extrovert and then persuaded even though their initial thoughts might be better. Cain supports this claims with her own experience as an introverted kid being ripped from her books and solitude and told to be more outgoing. The proof is in the pudding, for anyone who’s been to school you know that the extroverted kids...

...Ted Talk “The Power of Introverts”, Susan Cain explains the concept of introversion and how people who identify as introverted fit into the world of work and creativity. She begins by recounting when she was younger and went to summer camp. While she had planned two months of quiet reading with her fellow camp friends, everyone else held a different idea of how the summer would be spent. Cain recounts participating in a multitude of group activities that went against her relaxed and pensive personality. While she enjoyed the fun she had she was aware that being a part of a crowd did not sit as well with her as being an individual. In fact, Cain goes on to say that the normal behavior of introverts to walk off on their own is exactly what helps them be the most productive version of themselves. Introverts and extroverts respond to different stimuli which means the way they are able to work and think requires different atmospheres and tactics. The environments of schools and work offices currently discourages introversion and rather encourages extraversion. While utilizing group dynamics is helpful for things such as brainstorms, they should not be the foundation for productivity. Allowing privacy and the time to explore one’s own mind can be extremely beneficial as relating to output of creative thoughts and ideas. Cain states that in a world where one-third to one-half of people are...

...The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking In the book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, by Susan Cain, takes you through several eye-opening examples of the world of introverts and extroverts. Introverts are people who are shy, mostly quiet and prefer being alone, while extroverts are the opposite. Susan Cain brings up how extroverts are the most successful people in life, such as CEO’s for example. While also mentioning how introverts are people who change your daily life and revolutionize the world. I love how the author expands the definition of introverts and extroverts, by bringing us several examples of the lives of well known people and what they were, but Susan Cain also confuses me by making an extrovert seem much better than an introvert. You can say she elaborates more on extroverts and makes introverts seem bad....

Society often connects leadership skills with extroverted traits. It if often believed that if someone is an introvert, then there is no way they can be successful in a leadership position- like a CEO or Office Manager. ...Embracing Introverts Heather Wallace Ivy Tech Community College Embracing Introverts “Our lives are shaped as profoundly by personality as by gender or race.”(Susan Cain, 2012, p. 211). Cain stated this in the excerpt “The Power of the Introverts” from the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. Cain explained how psychologists categorized our lives into introvert or extrovert. That is, two types of personality traits. She gave explanation and examples on what she has stated. Cain explained where introverts and extroverts came into our lives. She explained where we fall on the introvert- extrovert spectrum. “Our place on this continuum influences our choice of friends and mates, and how we make conversation, resolve differences, and show love” (Cain, 2012, p. 211). According to Cain (2012), it can determine what career field we choose, what music we listen to, what we do without sleep, and if we would be a good leader. I think Cain explained herself well. I agree with everything she said. She made it clear how introverts and extrovert came into our lives and why we pick the things we do. Introversion and extroversion are very involved personality styles. There is nothing bad about being an introvert or extrovert. One is not better than the other. It is simply who you are. There is no shame in being one or the other. Extroverts like to be the center of attention. They are very outgoing, enthusiastic, independent, and have a tendency to...

...Every school year, I have come across great books that are educating and inspiring but this year I read a book that I was able to relate myself the most and also learn more about myself. In the book Quiet, by Susan Cain, she informed the audience including myself about the power of being an introvert and also the disadvantage they face growing up in United States. Being an introvert myself, I chose this book to read in my english class because I thought I can learn more about myself and understand the reason behind my behaviors in daily life. As I read the introduction of Cain, I immediately had a personal connection as she explained her introverted characteristics and her interest in exploring and reasoning her argument about how underrated...

...This Ted Talk video “The Power of Introverts” is about introverts and how it is important to give them their space. In this video, Susan Cain talks about people tend to “favor the man of action, over the man of contemplation.” Basically, what this quote is saying is that people tend to pick people; that are more active and who seems to be a dominate leader over people that are a bit more reserved. This is the author’s main idea because most introverts are more isolated and they like environments that are quieter and where they can be alone. She believes that it is hard to be an introvert in a world made for extroverts. In this Ted Talk the speaker informs us that there was a study done and they found out that 1/3 out of ½ of the population...

...Leadership is an often debated topic. Everyone has their own opinion of the types of characteristics leaders or management should possess. Employees and staff often have their own views about their managers or supervisors leadership style. Many leaders have their own style of leadership. They have their own special way of motivating a group to achieve a goal. There are many types of leadership. What type of leadership brings success? What factors motivate employees to exceed expectation? What must a supervisor or manager do to increase performance and exceed goals? What leadership skills or traits affect the company’s culture and ethics? Can leadership style be demonstrated through the organization? Management uses several ways that lead to successful performance such as initiating structure, emotional intelligence, and thoughtful and ethical leadership (Robbins & Judge). Leadership has been defined as the ability to influence others. “We define leadership as the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or a set of goals.” (Robbins & Judge pg.368) A leader can use his or her power to affect the behaviors of others. In this report we will compare two companies, Enron and Google, with vastly different cultures and the effectiveness of their leadership style. Our goal is to determine whether different leadership styles affect the company’s culture and overall performance. Leadership and Motivation Style in Google Larry Page and Sergey...

...Mike Zukswert EN 101 Professor Valone 3 November 2014 Muscle Car I am an independent filmmaker. I have been for about four years. In that time, I have begun and maintained two youtube channels, one for strictly film, and one for showcasing special effects. My main focus is the art and design of film, however. Camera movements, lighting techniques, mood settings, and post-production editing all appeals to me in a way that no other concept or activity can. This past year, I was awarded over seventeen hundred dollars in scholarship money for my accomplishments. Film is clearly a very important, very key aspect of my life. When people ask me what I do, I say I make films. This already says a lot about my character. It shows ambition, curiosity, and distinction. However, as much of a role as I think it plays in my identity, it is not singularly consumed by filmmaking. It’s consumed by many ingredients. Identity is compiled of endless traits, qualities, concepts, and morals that describe who you truly are as an individual and completely set you apart from the social norm. “My identity is what prevents me from being identical to anybody else” (Reader, pg. 40). A basic concept this is, but with a very specific message. Amin Maalouf, writer of In the Name of Identity, describes his identity as being a way to set himself apart. Maalouf writes heavily on religion and heritage. This relates to the concept of vertical and horizontal heritage. Your vertical heritage is your religious...

...By definition, a leader is someone who guides, directs and inspires people. From Julius Cesar, to Napoleon all the way to Steve Jobs, many influential people have been pinpointed as great leaders throughout history. These people have been scrutinized, thoroughly studied in an attempt to understand what makes a great leader, what makes someone an inspirational, influential person. There is a multitude of different theories and models of leadership, which evolve or become outdated as the world changes and studies multiply. For instance, in the 1930s, the developed trait theory of leadership focused on specific physical and psychological attributes positively correlated to leadership effectiveness. In this view, people are ‘born’ leaders dividing the population into leaders and non-leaders. Early trait theorists assumed that one’s personality defined their potential to be great leaders no matter the context. As a result, the situational approach to leadership emerged and the focus turned to behaviors around the 1960s. As opposed to the traits theory, it gave leadership a dynamic dimension: the environmental factors play a role in dividing people into leaders and followers. Rather than personality traits, the situational approach studied human behavior. Building on these approaches, the contingency theory defined three styles of leadership: the authoritarian, democratic and laissez-faire leadership styles, that each were suited to certain situations. Later on, Fred Fiedler distinguished...

It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant...

...WRITING REFERENCES Citi: Oil Could Plunge to $20, and This Might Be 'the End of OPEC' "It looks exceedingly unlikely for OPEC to return to its old way of doing business," Morse wrote. Despite global declines in spending that have driven up oil prices in recent weeks, oil production in the U.S. is still rising, wrote Edward Morse, Citigroup's global head of commodity research. Brazil and Russia are pumping oil at record levels, and Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran have been fighting to maintain their market share by cutting prices to Asia. The market is oversupplied, and storage tanks are topping out. A pullback in production isn't likely until the third quarter, Morse said Vets fight to save hero dog who tried to shield owner from house fire "She's doing OK.
