...ARC 188 A 7 December 2012 Sustainable Building Practices in Cincinnati Sustainable building favors the notion that cities are the solution to minimizing heating costs and carbon footprints. The shift towards sustainable urban development is due to the idea that the high density of the population allows for the most effective way to tackle unsustainability. Multi-unit apartment buildings were already more sustainable than single-family homes so this approach only improves upon the already efficient and ignores the least efficient communities, the suburbs. As urban development improves cities, the surrounding suburbs are left as remnants of a period where the American Dream was to have a yard, a car, and four walls to heat. For the existing single-family homes, it may be too costly of an undertaking to upgrade the current facilities because the homes were not designed to be sustainable and their location alone is far from efficient. Yet, there will always be people who prefer to live in the suburbs so instead of focusing on fixing the inefficient homes, create a community of new homes that sets the standard for future developments. First, a location must be chosen. A problem with suburbs is that they are already well developed and the easiest way to find space is to move farther away from Downtown Cincinnati, but that only creates more inefficiencies with transportation and commuting costs. A result of all the development that predates the planned community...

...always excelled in physical sciences specifically in Mathematics and have received many awards in Mathematics in high school. I loved mathematics because of it’s logical reasoning to solve problems and it was always very exciting for me to solve complicated problems. I used to participate in various mathematical quiz competitions and earned many prizes on these competitions. From then, day by day mathematics became my chief enthusiasm. Doing a BSc in Mathematics was a wonderful experience for me. I entered the department of Mathematics of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in the session 2008-2009, as a self-motivated and optimistic student, looking forward to study Mathematics. It is a premiere public university in Bangladesh and I had to go through a strict admission test in order to get admitted. I was among the handful students to get selected to study Mathematics at SUST. It was here, my interest to computer science started to grow besides mathematics. During my undergraduate studies I had the opportunity to study mathematics in details. I started to enjoy courses in computer science because of its close relation to mathematics. I have also enjoyed physics and statistics. During my study of courses in mathematics I had strong interest in the applied courses of mathematics. I studied abstract parts of mathematics such as abstract algebra, topology, group theory, mathematical analysis but found greater interest in the applied courses such as Differential...

Oates4 1 Sustainability Research Institute, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds, UK 2 Department of Business Administration, College of Business Administration, Chonnam National University, South Korea 3 Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University, UK 4 Management School, University of Sheffield, UK ABSTRACT The ‘attitude–behaviour gap’ or ‘values–action gap’ is where 30% of consumers report that they are very concerned about environmental issues but they are struggling to translate this into purchases. For example, the market share for ethical foods remains at 5 per cent of sales. This paper investigates the purchasing process for green consumers in relation to consumer technology products in the UK. Data were collected from 81 self-declared green consumers through in depth interviews on recent purchases of technology products. A green consumer purchasing model and success criteria for closing the gap between green consumers’ values and their behaviour are developed. The paper concludes that incentives and single issue labels (like the current energy rating label) would help consumers concentrate their limited efforts. More fundamentally, ‘being green’...

...An investigation on how the mode of transport affect study, leisure, social activities, and academic performance of undergraduate students Abstract This study seeks to investigate how mode of transport influences the activities of undergraduate students, and whether it impacts their academic performance. The activity patterns of 50 KPTM students are analysed. The respondent profile indicates that slightly more than half are females; between 21-24 years old; and currently pursuing their bachleor degree. In terms of lifestyle, large majority are average and above average financially; with 2 to 4 siblings; using private transport; and exercise irregularly. In terms of study-related activities, their academic performances are self-reported as average and above average; fair and good class attendance; only sometimes or never late for class; and considered to be more focused and attentive by their preferences to seat between the front-middle and the middle-back rows. In terms of time spent (hours per week) on the core activities, on average the students reported to study 20.6 h/week; to have leisure time for 24.6 h/week; social activities for 40.4 h/week; and working 3.4 h/week. The major findings of this study reveal that mode of transport does play an important role in student’s study, leisure, and social activities. The findings indicate that those students with private transport tend to spend slightly less time on self-study (20.4-20.8 h/week) and miss slightly more classes...

I have done hours of extensive research on McDonald’s and the limited-service restaurant industry and have been eating McDonald’s for over 20 years. I will discuss McDonald’s past performance versus the industry and provide a prognosis for the future. There is a rich history behind McDonald’s, starting in 1948 with the McDonald brothers. Ray Kroc started franchising McDonald’s in 1955 and from there built a corporation. Most missions and values still used today are those Kroc implemented. McDonald’s is structured as a multifunctional form. It is mainly organized by geographical area. There are four main geographical areas and those are then it is broken up even further. ...STOCKHOLM SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS Master thesis within Finance Evaluating the Performance of Socially Responsible Investment Funds: A Holding Data Analysis H. Camilla Stenström* Jessica J. Thorell** Abstract: This paper investigates the performance of regular mutual funds compared to Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) mutual funds, over the time period of January 2001 to September 2007. The paper extends the research on the performance of SRI funds by using holding data of regular funds to create replicating portfolios. In the replicating portfolios, unethical investments are excluded according to a norm-based screening list, hence creating artificial SRI funds. The replicating portfolio returns are then used as a benchmark to compare against the SRI funds’ and regular funds’ returns. Results from the study indicate that an exclusion of companies according to norm-based screening can improve a fund’s performance. However, when looking specifically at the fund management of SRI funds, the results point towards inferior performance compared to regular funds. ...Advantages and disadvantages of developing mass tourism Today tourism is one of the largest industries in the world. In some countries it is the main economic division. There is a wide variety of tourist types within the tourism market today,so much so that the term ‘average tourist’ has become irrelevant. (Murphy,1985) The United Nations states that ‘In Cambodia, one of the poorest countries in the world tourism is the main economic division was expected to generate 7.3% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2004 and close to 400,000 jobs.’(United Nations, 2007).The most of people think that the economic impact of tourism is absolutely positive whereas the social and environmental impact is only negative. Indeed, increasing incomes to regions due to tourists are easy to see as well as numerous host-tourist conflicts and destruction of the environment and local cultures. However, tourism can have both positive and negative outcomes for residents in communities when sharing and preserving their culture and nature could be seen as conflicting goals.(McComick, B.E.2002,p303) Nevertheless here could be two sides of outcomes: positive and negative. The positive side is that tourism has brought booming business to many countries and causes economic growth Although tourism brings many jobs to countries and decrease unemployment. Also tourism supports business. Tourists purchase local goods and use local services such as attraction, entertainment and other. . However tourism has...
